Appalachian Diabetes Patients' Preferences For Mental Health Treatment, Sameep Dilip Maniar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Although psychologists are beginning to be employed in medical settings, little is known about medical patients' preferences when encountering mental health problems. One population that could be better served by this type of research is diabetes mellitus because of the poor adherence rates and high depression associated with the disease. The current study aimed to identify diabetes patients' preferences for treatments and helpers when encountering emotional difficulties. Data were collected on 80 patients from an Appalachian region of the United States who had previously been diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Results indicated that diabetes patients were …
The Changing Face Of Hiv/Aids: An Anthropological And Epidemiological Study Of The Baton Rouge Area, Erica Brooke Gibson
The Changing Face Of Hiv/Aids: An Anthropological And Epidemiological Study Of The Baton Rouge Area, Erica Brooke Gibson
LSU Master's Theses
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the resulting Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) became widespread in the early 1980’s. At the beginning of the epidemic, HIV/AIDS was affecting mainly gay men. As the disease began to spread, more diverse populations were affected. Now, two decades later, the face of HIV and AIDS has changed. In the year 2000, the Baton Rouge area (which includes the parishes of Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana) had the highest detected rate of HIV/AIDS cases in the state, and the 16th highest detected rate of …

Pathogenesis Of Bartonella Henselae In The Domestic Cat: Use Of A Pcr-Based Assay For The Detection And Differentiation Of B. Henselae Genotype I And Genotype Ii In Chronically Infected Cats., Alma Faye Roy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Bartonella henselae is a zoonotic agent in which the domestic cat serves as the natural reservoir, and humans acquire potentially serious infections associated with this microorganism. The purpose of this research is to contribute to the understanding of the pathogenesis of B. henselae in the domestic cat using a molecular approach. Using sequence differences in a portion of the I 6S rRNA gene between B. henselae genotype I, and B. henselae genotype II, a nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) was designed and used to investigate various phases of feline bartonellosis. The nPCR detected 3.2 organisms per milliliter of blood which …

Autobiographical Memory In Mild And Moderate Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type., Judith Parks Levy
Autobiographical Memory In Mild And Moderate Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type., Judith Parks Levy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive disease that particularly affects memory with difficulties starting insidiously and gradually progressing. Anterograde amnesia for semantic and episodic types of declarative knowledge becomes the most prominent and disproportionately impaired cognitive symptom. By the middle stages of the disease, this memory loss progresses to severe impairment. The neuropathology of early AD involves the hippocampal complex, which is involved in new learning and storage of recent experiences. As the disease progresses, it involves neocortical areas, which are involved in the storage of more remote memories. Participants, including minimal stage AD, mild stage AD, moderate stage AD, …

Satisfaction With Health Care: A Predictor Of Hemodialysis Patient Compliance., Pamela Gay Davis
Satisfaction With Health Care: A Predictor Of Hemodialysis Patient Compliance., Pamela Gay Davis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Several studies in general medical populations have demonstrated the positive relation between satisfaction with health care and compliance with treatment recommendations. Overall, the compliance literature suggests that the behavior of the health care provider can influence patient compliance and the resulting health outcome. However, the relation between patient satisfaction and compliance with the hemodialysis regimen has not been examined. Because of this populations' frequent and extensive interaction with the dialysis staff, exploration of the effects of satisfaction with these relationships and the care provided on patient compliance appears to be an important health care issue. This study evaluated the ability …

An Examination Of The Effects Of The Mother's Education And Household Exposure To Disease On Childhood Diarrheal Morbidity In Sudan., Dawood Hussein Sultan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines the effect of increases in the mother's level of education on the likelihood of diarrheal morbidity among Sudanese children aged 6 to 23 months. Maximum likelihood logistic regression models are used in the analysis. The logit estimates obtained from these models revealed that children of mothers who are illiterate run on average more than 10 times the risk of diarrhea as that run by children to mothers with a senior secondary or higher education. Slight increases in the mother's education, as indicated by an incomplete primary school education, reduce the likelihood of diarrhea by more than 50%. …
Medical Compliance In Hiv-Infected Patients: An Analysis Of Outpatient Clinic Attendance., Jennifer B. Mcclure
Medical Compliance In Hiv-Infected Patients: An Analysis Of Outpatient Clinic Attendance., Jennifer B. Mcclure
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Currently there is no cure for HIV/AIDS. The only way to deter progression of this disease is through regular prophylactic and curative treatment regimens. Thus, it is critical that patients are compliant with their outpatient medical appointments. Despite this, high rates of noncompliance have been reported among patients with HIV/AIDS. In addition, little attention has been directed toward establishing causal factors of this noncompliance. The present study represents one of the first efforts to elucidate psychosocial, illness, and demographic factors associated with compliance with outpatient, HIV-specific treatments. The results of this study indicate noncompliance with medical appointments is a significant …
