Tales Of Mortality, Gregory S. Padgett Dec 2021

Tales Of Mortality, Gregory S. Padgett

Student Projects

Tales of Mortality is a one-person exhibition of prints and drawings. The exhibited work is meant to be a representation of my psyche wrestling with notions of divinity and mortality depicted through narrative illustrations in a style evocative of American Realism. The narratives I depict combine haunting images of death, religion and nature as a call for deep reflection and open communication on the reality of impermanence.

If it succeeds, the information and findings would be gathered to conclude if it is feasible for rising creators to put Non-fungible Tokens on the blockchain.

Enhancing Youth Awareness Of Protecting The Environment: What We Save, Saves Us, Alexa Hanson Dec 2021

Enhancing Youth Awareness Of Protecting The Environment: What We Save, Saves Us, Alexa Hanson

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

By incorporating environment protection within our daily routines, children can become more aware of how to reduce waste, save electricity, and to understand the importance of why we should protect nature. The project executed ways for the children to realize that simple changes in their daily routines, can make an impact in our world. A simple task, like turning off the water when brushing your teeth can help reduce the amount that is being used within the households. Each household is different in how they contribute to protecting the Earth so it is crucial to let the children know that …

The Mind Creates What It Needs, Matthew Corey Hawk Nov 2021

The Mind Creates What It Needs, Matthew Corey Hawk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This manuscript of original poems, entitled "The Mind Creates What It Needs," explores themes of home, grief, and mental health primarily through sonic play and metaphor. With fairly rigid formalism and general restraint from self-divulging, this work nevertheless examines where, how, and with whom we build community; how to process loss in the face of death and dying; as well as the healthy (and unhealthy) avenues for maintaining one's mental health in the face of difficult considerations such as these. Crucial to the collection is the interweaving of these varied themes over the course of the work; the ebbs and …

Transcendentalism, Art, And Social Change: An Overview For A New Generation, Nidra Kilmer Aug 2021

Transcendentalism, Art, And Social Change: An Overview For A New Generation, Nidra Kilmer

Theses - ALL

The purpose of this study is to investigate the philosophy, art, methods, and outcomes of the Transcendentalist movement in 19th century America, with the aim of identifying strategies for creative practice that may inspire artists and educators in the 21st century. In the introductory section, the need for such an inquiry is established. Correlations are drawn between transcendental art from China, India, and America, in order to enrich the conversation by examining how ideas of transcendentalism, art, and social change are approached from different cultural perspectives. The historical context and philosophical roots of the American Transcendentalists is summarized, followed by …

In-Between The Wind, Victoria L. Vontz

LSU Master's Theses

In-between the Wind is a compilation of poems, short stories, theories, photographs, and drawings that reveal my relationship and connection with nature. Through prose, I expose and question my place in the world, how I see it and how I am connected to it, while photographic images and drawings leave space for thoughtful and reflective meditation. The work draws upon memories, discusses theories of connection, and aims to record ephemeral moments that often seem to be too easily forgotten.

360º Videos Of Natural Scenery Delivered Via Virtual Reality Devices And Its Effect On Mood, Joseph Strong Aug 2021

360º Videos Of Natural Scenery Delivered Via Virtual Reality Devices And Its Effect On Mood, Joseph Strong

Doctoral Dissertations

Nature has long been touted as a method to alleviate the symptoms of stressful modern life and introduce some aesthetic novelty. For those individuals for whom access to nature is in some way limited, especially older adults facing poor physical or mental health, novel approaches to bring the outside world in are necessary to help enhance quality of life. This pilot study endeavors to help improve the mood of a sample of 43 older adults by testing a new intervention – using smart phones to deliver 360-degree videos of nature. Results of the study provide evidence that the intervention may …

Tsiyim, A Hiding, Aaron Lopatin Aug 2021

Tsiyim, A Hiding, Aaron Lopatin

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Tsiyim is a collection of poems and poetic sequences that investigate faith, doubt, and the natural world. The poems draw on the stories of martyrs, saints, prophets, and pilgrims, entering a mimetic chain that sets language and poetry as the placeholder for a contemporary faith to take place.

Beyond Mental And Physical Pain: A Non-Reductive Account Of Suicide, Aya Aly Ragheb Jun 2021

Beyond Mental And Physical Pain: A Non-Reductive Account Of Suicide, Aya Aly Ragheb

Theses and Dissertations

What is the stigma behind our understanding of suicide? What causes this stigma? Should suicide only be viewed in relation to physical pain, as medicine often views it, or mental pain, as psychiatry views it? Or is it a more complex phenomenon? Can we think of suicide as a rational act that is, on the one hand, independent of pain, without, on the other hand, reducing it to mental illness? I will argue that if we can, we can give a less reductive account of suicide. In this paper, we shall attempt to give an answer to the above questions …

Listening To The Unhearable, Ollie Rosario Jun 2021

Listening To The Unhearable, Ollie Rosario

Masters Theses

My work lives in the world of trees, lakes, oceans, sunrises, starlight, hurricanes, and mountains, the world centered on the rumbling sounds of the earth and water, the quiet roars of silence in the air, in space, in the depths beneath, and all that lives in between. In approaching this world, I have found myself unable to hear everything it shares. The hard to perceive, often soundless parts of environments — those facets of climate, the ground we stand on, the subtle changes in noise - are often unobserved, or under-observed, and underappreciated. I have cultivated a practice of seeking …

More Than Stories: Indigenous Environmental Reciprocity In The Poetry Of Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner, Rebecca Purse Jun 2021

More Than Stories: Indigenous Environmental Reciprocity In The Poetry Of Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner, Rebecca Purse

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis brings to the forefront the traditional stories Marshallese poet, performer, and climate change activist Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner shares in her published poetry. Indigenous studies scholars agree that Indigenous stories have power--power to change, power to inform, and power to heal. The traditional stories in Jetñil-Kijiner's poetry reveal the power of the environment and the potential relationships that can exist between humans and natural beings. While these traditional stories work to disrupt the narrative that Indigenous perspectives, knowledges, and cultures are somehow inferior to their colonial neighbors', they also assert the need for a return to environmental reciprocit--or the establishment …

MFA in Visual Arts Theses

Abstract

Our Mother Never Asked for This, is a series of artworks consisting of paintings, sculptures, installations, and fiber art. The aim of the work is to capture the colors and emotion that I have encountered in my time outdoors.

My work examines a human connection with nature through the use of naturally derived materials used to create pigments, and recycled linen. I use the context of art to explore the …

Like Water Taught By Thirst, Emily Wilker Jun 2021

Like Water Taught By Thirst, Emily Wilker

Masters Theses

I am interested in the practice of painting as a way to deepen one’s relationship with nature and its many ecosystems. To me, art not only illustrates these experiences of entanglement, but also is a realm for a sensorial engagement that surpasses representation. During my time at RISD, I have learned that painting can act as a generative tool, a therapeutic ritual, a release of energy, and a place to bridge connections to other facets of my life. It is through the conception, envelopment, and evolution of materials and their relationship to an anthropocentric society that I continue to investigate …

Out Of Bounds, Luciana Iwamoto Jun 2021

Out Of Bounds, Luciana Iwamoto

Masters Theses

Humans have an inescapable desire for rationality, structure, and order. We seek efficiency and certainty in our individual and communal lives. We have been encouraged to believe that most things are under our control until something strikes us and brings to consciousness the limits of our knowledge. It’s usually nature’s wild power that overwhelms our faculty of reason and reminds us of our limits. Philosophers called this sensation of overwhelm in the face of nature the sublime experience. In modern cities, surrounded by skyscrapers, we are reminded of our own technological achievements, while nature feels disconnected and distant. Yet, if …

Forgotten Things: A Historian's Tale, Mary Jackson May 2021

Forgotten Things: A Historian's Tale, Mary Jackson

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Forgotten Things: A Historian’s Tale is a story of a post-human world where magic and creatures of lore have taken sovereignty over the land, following the adventures of Aster, a small flower elf whose job is to travel and document the residual traces of humanity. Every crumbling building, decaying record, and seemingly useless bauble of humanity tells a story, one that Aster is trying to find the conclusion to. One day, rumors start to circulate. Whispers that there might still be humans hidden away somewhere. Aster is thrilled about this, hoping that she might be able to talk with a …

Through The Wilderness: Andrew Jackson's Military Road And The Settlement Of The Southern Frontier, Dustin Mitchell Wren May 2021

Through The Wilderness: Andrew Jackson's Military Road And The Settlement Of The Southern Frontier, Dustin Mitchell Wren

MSU Graduate Theses

Shortly after the War of 1812, the U.S government attempted to construct a new military road system connecting Nashville, Tennessee to strategic ports at New Orleans and Mobile. The road was intended to grant faster military responses to British, Spanish, and Indian threats within America’s southern frontier and to aid in the region’s settlement. The American government directed iconic General Andrew Jackson to spearhead the road’s construction, believing the construction would be rapid and the expenses minimal. However, the impenetrable thickets and inundating swamps of the Mississippi Territory proved untamable, while shifting geo-political dynamics mitigated the road’s necessity. Never used …

Portrait Of Rich County, Adrian Thomson May 2021

Portrait Of Rich County, Adrian Thomson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Portrait of Rich County presents the small town of Randolph, Utah in poems describing its wildlife, recreational activities, and the perspectives of citizens in the contemporary rocky mountain west. Special attention to the imagination of the poems’ speaker toward the more dreamlike qualities of Rich County establishes itself throughout, in order to convey a feeling of hope within harsh terrain. This collection examines the theme of salvaging items not often considered, such as rusted junk, ancient houses, or roadside garbage, both in the actions of the speaker and through the act of naming these items upon the page. An over-arching …

Historical Nets, Jenny E. Washburne May 2021

Historical Nets, Jenny E. Washburne

All Theses

This creative thesis consists of two historical fiction short stories and a critical essay discussing the merits and challenges of writing historical fiction. The essay ties together the main themes of the short stories, both set in the early 1900s American west, and discusses how an author’s choice in character, plot, and setting may interact with a historical perspective to capture something that transcends time. As the critical component of the thesis, the essay also explores the techniques of well-known fiction writers who use history in their storytelling, drawing together time and place in ways unique to the genre. The …

A Classroom Without Four Walls? Paving The Way For More Outdoor Education, Sandra Anaya-Zamora May 2021

A Classroom Without Four Walls? Paving The Way For More Outdoor Education, Sandra Anaya-Zamora

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The focus of this Capstone Project is on the need to increase outdoor education opportunities for students. More specifically, how can teachers increase outdoor learning opportunities during instructional time? This is important because a lack of outdoor educational opportunities hinders students from learning benefits only found through their environment. It is argued that a decrease in environmental integration in schools will cause children to lose touch with nature, affecting their development and the future sustainability of our planet. The three primary stakeholder perspectives chosen were one teacher, one science teacher, and one garden-nutrition educator because considerations of the issue should …

A Baseline Documentation Report For The Delta Wind Birds Sky Lake Nature Reserve, Michael Thomas Apr 2021

A Baseline Documentation Report For The Delta Wind Birds Sky Lake Nature Reserve, Michael Thomas

Honors Theses

The purpose of this baseline documentation is to conduct a report on our subject property and discuss the findings. A conservation easement is established by upholding a certain standard of a property’s current condition which makes a baseline documentation necessary for an easement to be enacted. Baseline documentation reports are used as a resource to monitor and enforce the legal agreements of the conservation easement. The subject property is currently owned by the Delta Wind Birds organization. In our scenario, this documentation report will serve to aid in the conversion of our subject property into a conservation easement in which …

Orphans, Ryan Burden Apr 2021

Orphans, Ryan Burden

Theses and Dissertations

This novel explores the ways in which our concepts of children and family shape our larger perceptions of reality, and vice-versa. It tells the story of a family in rural, upstate New York, using three different perspectives: Grace (the head of household), Eve (her foster child), and Bo, a recent addition to the family. Eve has lived with Grace since childhood, while Bo was taken in after attempting to escape from a rehabilitation camp for boys. Over the course of two days, the children try to manage their own internal conflicts, while Grace does her best to help them. The …

Master's Project: Rooting For The Earth: An Exploration Into Human Relationships With Nature, Marieke E. Bender Jan 2021

Master's Project: Rooting For The Earth: An Exploration Into Human Relationships With Nature, Marieke E. Bender

Rubenstein School Leadership for Sustainability Project Publications

In a Western, industrialized context, environmental education is an important method of fostering care and interest in the natural world. This education can include various types of engagement from a formal classroom setting to an entertaining and emergent outdoor program. These structures are designed to engage and teach people about the Earth’s systems and more-than-human ways of being, often in the hopes of inspiring care and stewardship for our planet. Outdoor educators play an integral role in introducing or re-connecting human bodies to the world around them. The structures of white supremacy and colonialism, however, permeate much of the mainstream …

Interactions Between Brief Virtual Exposure To Natural Environments And Psychological Well-Being, Giuliana Gn Brancato Jan 2021

Interactions Between Brief Virtual Exposure To Natural Environments And Psychological Well-Being, Giuliana Gn Brancato

Undergraduate Honours Theses

Interactions with nature have been associated with improved emotional well-being and attentional functioning. Nature, however, is a broad category, encompassing several ecosystems that are perceptually distinctive (e.g., forests versus countryside fields), making it unclear whether all nature environments improve well-being to similar degrees. Therefore, the current experiment assessed how viewing a brief video of different natural environments, compared to viewing a video of an urban environment, influenced subjective ratings of restoration and psychological well-being. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three video conditions, which depicted a simulated walk through a forest, a countryside field, or an urban city. Immediately …

Representations Of Nature And Ecological Collapse In The Novels Of Jane Austen, Lydia Maria Child, And Catharine Maria Sedgwick, Faten Hafez Jan 2021

Representations Of Nature And Ecological Collapse In The Novels Of Jane Austen, Lydia Maria Child, And Catharine Maria Sedgwick, Faten Hafez

Theses and Dissertations

Did Jane Austen precede Charles Dickens in pointing out air pollution in the big cities? Did she predate Elizabeth Gaskell in delineating the odd blending of rural and industrial towns? And did she surpass Mary Elizabeth Braddon in acknowledging the unusual cultivation of fruits in hothouses? Indeed, Austen antedated Victorian novelists in predicting early signs of environmental manipulation and identifying the attitudes and practices that led to the ecological collapse of early nineteenth century England. In Emma, Isabella’s health blooms in the fresh air of Highbury as opposed to London’s “bad air;” an indication of air pollution wreaking havoc on …

Conservation, Sharks, And The Tragedy Of The Commons: Achieving Human-Nature Holism, Fiona Melady Jan 2021

Conservation, Sharks, And The Tragedy Of The Commons: Achieving Human-Nature Holism, Fiona Melady

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Environmental ethics originates from the idea that the relationship between humans and non-human nature should be considered morally. How we deal with environmental issues depends on our perception of human-environment relationships. Many view nature as something separate from themselves to own, use, and exploit for human benefit; others view nature as something of which humans are a part and having an intrinsic value aside from practicality or usefulness. This thesis examines human-environment relationships through anthropocentrism and ecocentrism and advocates for balancing the two perspectives. Furthermore, this thesis examines the importance of marine environmental conservation, particularly sharks, and how transitioning towards …
