Our Moral Relationship To Nature, Benjamin Simpson
Our Moral Relationship To Nature, Benjamin Simpson
Senior Theses
In this paper I will explore the question of whether or not humans, as natural beings, are morally responsible for their actions in relation to nature. After all most natural beings, i.e. deer, wolves, whales, or even plants, regardless of their level of intelegence, are held responsible for their effect on the environment. When a rabbit population explodes and an ecosystem is sent into turmoil, we do not morally find fault with the rabbits. With this in mind I ask: why is it so different when humans send an ecosystem into distress? What is our moral relationship to nature? To …
My Kinship With The Trees, C. Daniela Shapiro
My Kinship With The Trees, C. Daniela Shapiro
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
This paper explores facets of patriarchy affecting women and the natural world. The paper suggests a cultivation of allyship and relationality between women and nature due to a shared experience of objectification within patriarchy. The separation of women from nature through origin stories, science, religion, language, and advertisement will be discussed. Examples from the graphic memoir Running without Moving are employed to emphasize this philosophy, including first person accounts.
Restorative Playscape Design: A Phenomenological Approach To Designing Playscapes, Jennifer Bradley
Restorative Playscape Design: A Phenomenological Approach To Designing Playscapes, Jennifer Bradley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation outlines the development of a phenomenological and restorative approach to playscape design. Restorative Playscape (RPD) is a phenomenologically based approach to designing children’s play environments that involves a process of attending to, noticing, and uncovering natural affordances for play and development, and making enhancements to the environment so that the affordances can experienced in their full potential and capacity to support children’s growth and development. The restorative approach involves the application of three phenomenological methods to identify the affordances of the outdoor play environment: 1) Child Guided Walks- to explore the affective and relational dimension of children’s experience …
How Art Therapy Can Help Survivors Of Trauma Access An Embodied Sense Of Safety: A Literature Review Catherine L. Ripley
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Traumatic stress can disrupt systemic rhythms in the brain and body that enable a person to feel safe in the world. Therefore, the initial phase of trauma treatment must focus on establishing an embodied sense of safety. This literature review examined cross-disciplinary data to assess whether art therapy can help trauma survivors access an embodied sense of safety, and if so, what therapeutic mechanisms contribute to its effectiveness. The data indicated that trauma-informed art therapy can support an embodied sense of safety through activating key therapeutic factors that downregulate instinctual defense mechanisms which can occur as a result of traumatic …
Transcendence: Exploring The Connections Between Transgender/Gender Non-Conforming Identities And Experiences Of Nature Through Art, Mc Jackson
Undergraduate Theses
“Transcendence: Exploring the connections between transgender/gender non-conforming identities and experiences of nature through art” is the written portion of a creative thesis revolving around an immersive art installation and short film. Transcendence, the installation, was created to promote connection by exploring the overlap between transgender and gender non-conforming (GNC) experiences and experiences of nature. Part of this installation is a short film of interviews conducted with transgender and GNC individuals about nature, their gender experiences, and the transcendent nature of the two. The written thesis analyzes existing literature on nature as a restorative, therapeutic, spiritual setting, offers insight into …
Interoceptive Practices Performed In Nature And Not In Nature: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Krista Steinbach, Jennifer Betlach
Interoceptive Practices Performed In Nature And Not In Nature: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Krista Steinbach, Jennifer Betlach
Master of Arts in Holistic Health Studies Research Papers
Interoception is consciously interpreting and integrating bodily sensations. A person’s interoceptive awareness has a lasting effect as the mind and body attempt to maintain homeostasis. Time spent in nature offers greater stress reduction, cognitive functioning, and immune response. Both interoception and nature positively affect well-being, however, no studies describe interoceptive practice and time spent in nature as a combined experience. This phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of individuals engaging in a pre-recorded interoceptive practice six times, both in nature and non-nature settings. Eight participants describe their somatic, emotional, physiological, and overall essential experiences using descriptive journal worksheets with open-ended …
Effects Of Matching Images Of Natural And Built Environments On Delay Discounting: A Systematic Replication Of Berry Et Al. (2014), Elizabeth Fillmore
Effects Of Matching Images Of Natural And Built Environments On Delay Discounting: A Systematic Replication Of Berry Et Al. (2014), Elizabeth Fillmore
Theses
Decision making is heavily influenced by the environment around us. Berry et al. (2014, 2015, 2019) showed that viewing images of natural environments during the delay discounting task resulted in lower impulsive choice, as compared to viewing images of built environments or geometric figures. Berry et al. proposed that attentional factors could explain this effect, however, recent attempts to reproduce Berry et al.’s findings in a different laboratory have been unsuccessful (Johnson 2017, 2018, 2019). The present study tested if manipulating the participants’ observing responses towards different types of images (natural, built, and no images) modulates the effect reported by …
Consuming The World: Poetic Appetite, Memory, And Identity In Li-Young Lee’S Food Poems, Claire Liszka
Consuming The World: Poetic Appetite, Memory, And Identity In Li-Young Lee’S Food Poems, Claire Liszka
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Food is a universal human necessity, yet food often serves more than a biological purpose as it informs individual and communal identities, and even facilitates memory. This thesis explores personal memory, the development of identity, and an almost reverential connection to nature in several food poems by Li-Young Lee in Rose (1986) and Behind My Eyes (2008). Born in 1957, Lee has been writing poetry since he was young, studying under Gerald Stern in the late 1970s, and he is known for writing sublime, transcendent yet incredibly accessible and expressive poetry. This thesis gives an overview of food studies and …

Naturally: Memory In Verse, Heather L. Drouse
English Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis is a collection of free verse poetry that I have written that share a common theme of nature and family. This is a creative work that explores my personal memories and the feelings associated with them with the intention to spread joy and cause readers to reflect upon similar experiences they might have had as children. It consists of four major sections -- mother, father, love, and bridges -- and 18 poems, with "love" having 7 minor sections.
Reflections On Co-Creating Nature-Based Virtual Reality Experiences For Adults Living With Severe Copd, Olivia Mcanirlin
Reflections On Co-Creating Nature-Based Virtual Reality Experiences For Adults Living With Severe Copd, Olivia Mcanirlin
All Dissertations
This dissertation focused on studying the lived experience of working with and for people living with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to co-create a personalized nature-based virtual reality (VR) experience. People with severe COPD have issues with being able to breathe clearly and deeply, which then influences their ability to visit outdoor places. Outdoor places have been shown to have many positive effects on multi-dimensional health outcomes. Severe COPD can also make traveling to faraway destinations and even visiting nearby outdoor spaces difficult. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to develop personalized nature-based VR experiences as an alternative …
Bringing The Outdoors In: Creating Classroom Environments With Plants And Animals, Ethan Conti
Bringing The Outdoors In: Creating Classroom Environments With Plants And Animals, Ethan Conti
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The focus addressed in this Capstone Project is the benefits of live plants and animals within the classroom. This is an important issue for both students and teachers because live organisms within the classroom aids mental health, physical health, strengthens morals, and broadens horizons. An evidence based argument is offered that these issues are growing within the schools and need to be addressed with all tools available. The primary stakeholder perspectives chosen were teachers, because they are affected and can see the benefits of the topic at hand. Three themes/action options emerged from an analysis of the data and explored …

Assessing The Dynamic Amongst Self-Compassion, Connection To Nature, And Well-Being, Yueyi Fan
Honors Theses
In 2015, the United Nations deemed promoting individual well-being of paramount importance, along with seventeen other sustainable development goals (to be achieved by 2030). Unfortunately, overall mental health has taken sharp declines with the unprecedented onset of the COVID-19 pandemic (OECD, 2021). According to a report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the prevalence of anxiety and depression has increased globally; it has doubled or more than doubled as compared to previous years (OECD, 2021). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported increasing levels of adverse mental health conditions, substance use, and suicidal …
Reading Creation: Listening To The Spirit Of God Through Engaging The Natural World, Benjamin L. Black
Reading Creation: Listening To The Spirit Of God Through Engaging The Natural World, Benjamin L. Black
Doctor of Ministry
We live in a world consumed by commotion. The eyes of most are constantly focused on screens and our attention is often fixated on things of least importance. But what if the church had a means to encourage folks to set aside daily distractions, pay attention to the world, and intentionally listen to the Spirit of God? The following pages are devoted to the idea that: Intentional, outdoor-focused experiences, coupled with guided reflection and thoughtful observation of one’s interactions, have the potential to cultivate engagement with the Spirit of God, leading to spiritual development by creating opportunities for self-awareness and …
Fostering Connection Through Ecological Identity: Expanding Colonial Concepts Of Outdoor Adventures, Elizabeth Farrell
Fostering Connection Through Ecological Identity: Expanding Colonial Concepts Of Outdoor Adventures, Elizabeth Farrell
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
How can I foster ecological identity? Defining ecological identity as a sense of awareness of how one relates with nature, and identity as an ecological being that is nature, this action research project will explore the ways in which people connect to the natural world through everyday moments. In understanding that the foundations, practices, and industry messaging of the outdoors can be exclusive and perpetuate systems of oppression, I am seeking to expand the notion of what nature connection can be. The hope is to create more accessible, inclusive, and equitable outdoor education practices. Research design included a survey and …
Childhood Learning Through Mindful Sensory Experiences In Nature: Attentive Earth And Body– A Five-Lesson Educator’S Guide, April Andrescavage
Childhood Learning Through Mindful Sensory Experiences In Nature: Attentive Earth And Body– A Five-Lesson Educator’S Guide, April Andrescavage
Mindfulness Studies Theses
The benefits of spending time outside in nature are well documented for children. However, due to both micro and macro systems level causes, children are spending less time in nature than they have in the past. Children spend a large amount of time in school, which makes it the perfect setting to incorporate more time outside into their day. This paper begins with a review of current and historical literature around the themes of childhood experiential learning, nature exposure, and mindfulness experiences that focus on sensory learning. This research has informed the development of the creative project titled Attentive Earth …

Researchers have established the benefits of nature to learning and child development, yet there is a gap in the literature on elementary administrators’ perspectives of and experiences with NBL. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore elementary administrators’ perspectives of and experiences with NBL, its support of elementary student development, and its inclusion in elementary schools’ curricula and design. The research questions addressed elementary administrators’ perspectives of and experiences with NBL, how NBL supports student development, and how NBL is included in …
A Part From You, Kenneth Rick Briggenhorst Jr.
A Part From You, Kenneth Rick Briggenhorst Jr.
MSU Graduate Theses
I invite empathy through art that is technologically assisted to find alternative interpretations for nontheologically informed faith. The sudden passing of my dearest friend, Jimmy, encouraged me to dig through my archives of data, to cherish all the bytes that remain of him. In this endeavor, I find that death is not the end, but a post-physical state of being. I express this sentiment in a part from you, where the work utilizes inanimate constructs to place your faith in, to make sense of the complexities of grief in a digitally tethered way of life. This life that allows many …
Lessons From Cowboys And Nature's Narratives: Symbolic Interactionism And The Cowboy's Environmental Encounter, Isabel Piper Danishmend
Lessons From Cowboys And Nature's Narratives: Symbolic Interactionism And The Cowboy's Environmental Encounter, Isabel Piper Danishmend
Senior Projects Fall 2023
This paper analyzes both the ‘myth’ of the cowboy, as well as the real life experiences of one. Through the lenses of symbolic interactionism, naturework, and myth and meaning making, this paper looks into how cowboys see themselves in relation to the land and to nature. Drawing on insights from in person interviews and analysis of historic cowboy ballads, these concepts were defined through their personal experiences that became intertwined with their culturally linked identities. For cowboys, the concepts of 'land' and 'nature' not only represent words but also constitute lived realities that profoundly shape their self-perception.
A Walk In The Woods, Matthew Paul Macari
A Walk In The Woods, Matthew Paul Macari
Senior Projects Spring 2023
A Walk in the Woods is a piece of experimental multimedia consisting visually of images of the Hudson Valley processed through mid-90s computer graphics and aurally of field recordings, monologues, musical motifs, and songs. All of these elements are combined with the use of a game engine to create an interactive experience reminiscent of the MS-DOS video games of the mid to late-90s. Working on this project allowed me to both turn away from the discouragement caused by my unrealized musical plans and return to a place where I had once felt comfortable exploring my curiosity in the topics of …

A Theory Of General Relativity, Madeleine Mae Morris
A Theory Of General Relativity, Madeleine Mae Morris
Theses and Dissertations
"A Theory of General Relativity" is a quiet exploration into the poetic and scientific ways we inhabit space and time. This work is a manifestation of the time I spent being my grandmother's caretaker and exists now in the form of an artist book, an exhibition of framed photographs with glass objects, and this written thesis. Throughout those five years, I became consumed by the relationships between Mothers and Daughters, which brought into excruciatingly sharp focus seemingly simple questions like: who are we, what have we done to each other, what do we owe to each other, do I reap …
Tree Line, Eric Joseph Jensen
Tree Line, Eric Joseph Jensen
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
I was raised under a doctrine of extreme truth that cast a shadow over all reality. Upon rejecting that dogma, my life became a search to replace that truth. I’ve looked for it by immersing myself in the natural world and exploring my relationship with it through paint. My landscape painting practice has brought me a wealth of experiences; however, it has not given me an answer that fills the void of my upbringing. My thesis paper is an account of the questions, research, and paintings that surround my search. Nothing, it turns out, is absolute. There is a beauty …

Love Is Complicated: Examining Songs Of Love Lost And Won For Soprano Voice, Margaret Anna Collier
Recital Papers
This vocal recital paper will examine songs about relationships. It will focus on songs that feature various kinds of relationships, from romantic relationships that are either reciprocated or one-sided to the relationship between man and nature. The kinds of relationships featured are complex and require an examination of various other factors for each song to uncover the true nature of the relationship that is sung about. The repertoire represented in this paper was carefully and specifically chosen to represent my technical abilities, strengths, and stamina as the performer. These pieces represent an understanding of repertoire that spans several centuries of …

Impact Of A Recreational Outdoor And Adventure Program On Adolescent Well-Being, Mitchell J. Fritz
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
This study used an archival dataset to investigate the effects of a recreational outdoor and adventure program (ROAP) on overall adolescent well-being. Successful ROAPs have been found to increase overall well-being as well as other factors such as increased self-efficacy, peer involvement, connectedness to nature, and decreased stress. This study examined 34 high school to college age individuals who participated in a summer ROAP. Five crews completed a 28-day canoe trip in northern Minnesota, and one crew completed a 37-day canoe trip near the Brooks Range in Alaska. Participants completed pre-trip, post-trip, and 45-day follow-up surveys measuring overall well-being, self-efficacy, …

Half In Dream: The Tangle In The Grid, Abbey L. Paccia
Masters Theses
Half in Dream: The Tangle in the Grid discusses the form and content of a physical art installation by the same name. The site-specific installation is a large three-dimensional collage of natural ephemera collected from the area around Amherst, Massachusetts, which interacts with natural lighting conditions to illuminate a gallery-facing image of ever-moving light and shadow. The written work elaborates some of the many details within the structure of the artwork, and reveals the philosophies, embodied practices, and methodologies that informed the visual work's creation. Woven throughout are reflections on phenomenology, walking practice, General Systems Theory, collective making, narrative arts, …
Contemporary Eco Theory In Art Education: Field Notes And Desire Paths, Margaret K. Mccullough
Contemporary Eco Theory In Art Education: Field Notes And Desire Paths, Margaret K. Mccullough
Masters Theses
This thesis is an investigation into patterns and overlaps of three critical elements in our world, art, nature, and education. Integral to this investigation and the contributions to humanity of these three are the accurate depiction of specific realities, upon which Science and the majority of global citizens agree, aesthetic sensibility, as well as beneficent solutions (i.e. those which do no harm.) Together we will examine the intersection of subjects, what they combine to achieve. We will consider how, taught and learned in unison, they may take on a position of greater prominence in efforts to solve real world problems. …
He Had Two Women To Die For, Ireland And The Missus”: Mothers As Abject And Sons As Scapegoats In Edna O’Brien’S House Of Splendid Isolation And In The Forest, Emily Nix
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This thesis examines the protagonists in Edna O’Brien’s In the Forest and House of Splendid Isolation and applies Julia Kristeva’s theory of abjection and Rene Girard’s theory of the scapegoat. In doing so, I attempt to give a richer understanding of O’Brien’s masculine and feminine characters and how their constructed identities are based on their cultural circumstances and positions in their societies. I use Kristeva’s theory of abjection to analyze the single women in these novels, Eily and Josie, who become metaphorical single mothers by the invasions of young men into their homes. Then, I apply Girard’s theory of the …

A Perfect Escape: Fantasy, Place And Narrative In Adolescence, Cydney Cherepak
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
This essay explores the realms of special places, the literary genre of fantasy, narrative, and comics. These topics are traversed alongside subjects of adolescence and the creation of stories for middle-grade readers. Framed with personal stories, as well as peaks into my process, I investigate these subjects through the lens of my own life and work, specifically my thesis project, a comic for middle-grade readers titled Beyond the Castle Walls. Beginning with adolescence in association with special places, I consider the work of developmental psychologists David Sobel and Edith Cobb as they pin-point the role of secret forts, nature, …
Fictitious Ecology, Paulina Zuckerman
Fictitious Ecology, Paulina Zuckerman
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
My thesis project, The Mountain Fog, is a children’s picture book pitch that tells a light-hearted story of two dogs who must face an environmental disaster. In this accompanying critical essay, I break down the process of crafting a fictional relationship between author-illustrator, animal characters, and the environment. It begins through the context of J.R.R. Tolkien’s essay “On Fairy Stories,” which identifies seeing the world through two lenses - the Primary world and the Secondary world. From these terms, I navigate the idea of a fictitious ecology, an encapsulated anthropomorphic world governed by the creator’s personal experience with nature. This …
