Conflict Related Sexual Violence In Ethiopia: An Applied Approach To Prevention, Liya Yared
Master's Theses
The Ethiopia-Tigray civil war is one of the deadliest conflicts in recent world history and quickly drew international attention for the mass reports of sexual violence, war crimes, and ethnic cleansing by federal militants. Mass rapes and sexual violence were used along ethnic lines to devastate and displace communities in Ethiopia. Despite the signing of the peace agreement in November 2022 to cease hostilities, the sexual violence has not come to an end. The violence has consequently spread to the Afar, Amhara, and Oromia regions, neighboring Tigray. The sexual violence in Ethiopia was core to the armed conflict. Nonetheless, the …

Vaping In The Schools: A Training For Educators, Samantha Mcdaniel
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Since 2007, when vapes hit the United States tobacco market, adolescents have increasingly been a targeted population. Recently, anywhere from 1 in 5 to 1 in 4 high school students have reported using e-cigarettes (EC) or vapes (Rohde, Vereen, and Noar, 2021). With high levels of nicotine in vaping products such as JUUL, reaching the equivalent of 20 traditional combustible cigarettes (TCC) per pod and delivering nicotine at a 1.3 to 1.7 times faster rate than TCC, the concern and fear of adolescent nicotine addiction has reached epidemic levels (Kelder et al, 2020). Schools are ideal locations for EC and …

Adolescent sexual abuse and dating violence are serious issues that have life-changing impacts on victims. A Comprehensive Approach For Addressing E-Cigarette Use In High School Students, Michael Ebbert
Culminating Experience Projects
The prevalence of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use among youth has increased at an alarming rate. More teenagers are falling victim to the adverse physical and mental effects of e-cigarette use despite the attempted implementation of various prevention and intervention programs. Teenagers are influenced to use e-cigarettes by their peers, social media, and e-cigarette advertisements. Schools and parents need to work together to end the teenage e-cigarette use epidemic. The comprehensive e-cigarette prevention program will seek to increase the knowledge of e-cigarettes, raise awareness of the harms of nicotine addiction, and build positive peer support influences. African American Adolescents' Exposure To Community Firearm Violence And Associated Factors, Colleen S. Walsh
African American Adolescents' Exposure To Community Firearm Violence And Associated Factors, Colleen S. Walsh
Theses and Dissertations
Firearm violence is a public health crisis in the United States that disproportionately impacts African American adolescents and families living in economically marginalized communities. The current firearm violence exposure literature includes a limited focus on the (a) the identification of risk and promotive factors that influence the likelihood of exposure to community firearm violence, (b) is cross-sectional, (c) focuses on outcomes of firearm violence exposure, and (d) does not examine bi-directional relations to determine if risk and promotive factors are causes and/or consequences of firearm violence exposure. This gap in research is further exacerbated by the limited focus on African …
Improving Parental Communication With Adolescents About Sex, Amanda Blanton
Improving Parental Communication With Adolescents About Sex, Amanda Blanton
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
In 2018, 68 million people in the United States were infected with a sexually transmitted infection. Of those 68 million, 26 million cases were newly diagnosed, and of that 26 million, half were youth aged 15-24 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2022a). The approaches to educating our youth about sexual health are inconsistent, leading to misconceptions about the dangers associated with risky sexual behavior. However, parents have the upper hand in discussing sexual health information with their children by being the child’s first contact and source of information. Teens who report talking with their parents about sex are …
