Since 2007, when vapes hit the United States tobacco market, adolescents have increasingly been a targeted population. Recently, anywhere from 1 in 5 to 1 in 4 high school students have reported using e-cigarettes (EC) or vapes (Rohde, Vereen, and Noar, 2021). With high levels of nicotine in vaping products such as JUUL, reaching the equivalent of 20 traditional combustible cigarettes (TCC) per pod and delivering nicotine at a 1.3 to 1.7 times faster rate than TCC, the concern and fear of adolescent nicotine addiction has reached epidemic levels (Kelder et al, 2020). Adolescent sexual abuse and dating violence are serious issues that have life-changing impacts on victims. Sex education in the United States does place an emphasis on sexual assault and dating violence prevention curriculum to be provided for students. These programs have the potential to equip students with the knowledge to lead healthy relationships and prevent violent acts from happening. This review details 25 studies that provided these prevention programs to students and the impacts they had. Problem: A medical center in the Diablo Service Area had one of the highest rates in hospital-acquired pressure injury (HAPI), benchmarking with other facilities, with the project unit one of the top offenders. The patients and the medical center both suffered from the harm. Barriers to HAPI prevention included lack of patient turnings, skin assessment, and early standard wound care treatment.

Context: This project focused on the primary care team standardizing early wound care treatment to avoid wound progression.

The current study evaluated the associations between pre-assault factors, assault characteristics, and multiple sexual assault medical forensic exams (SAMFEs) on emergency department visits one-year post-SAMFE. Characteristics associated with individuals who frequent the emergency department at higher rates have been well established; however, factors associated with greater emergency department visits following a recent sexual assault (SA) are largely unknown. The current study included a medical record review of 123 individuals who received a SAMFE at a hospital in the southeastern United States. Demographic variables, characteristics of the SA, pre-SA diagnoses, frequency of SAMFEs, and post-SAMFE emergency department visits were examined. Results …

Effectiveness Of Intervention Studies Based On Diet And/Or Physical Activity In Treatment, Prevention, And Management Of Diabetes Among South Asians: A Systematic Review, Ishaan Arora

The purpose of this study was to describe diet and/or physical activity-based interventions and their control in cardiometabolic risk factors of diabetes for the South Asian (SA) population. A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Seventeen randomized control trials meeting the inclusion criteria were included for analysis. Interventions with type-2 diabetic SA showed significant improvements in HbA1c% (4/5 studies), fasting blood glucose (3/4 studies), and postprandial glucose (2/2 studies). Interventions with at-risk/prediabetic and non-diabetic SA showed a modest change in overall outcomes, with significant change reported for post-prandial insulin (3/4 studies), BMI and weight (2/4 studies), …

Background: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are the most common cause of a surgical complication and account for 38% of all hospital acquired infections (HAI). The cost of caring for SSIs in the United States can range from $3.5-$10 billion annually.

American Indians and Alaska Native (AIAN) people possess the resilience and fortitude to survive attempted genocide, colonization, and assimilation. Still, the resulting intergenerational trauma has left AIANs with suicide rates disproportionately higher than any other race. Purpose: The study focused on the school-based suicide prevention program for LGBTQ students. It aimed to identify risk factors facing LGBTQ students and examine the areas for improvements on the current suicide prevention program to better support LGBTQ students.

Methods: The study was conducted with the support of mental health professionals serving high school students. The study adopted post-positivism and utilized ecological systems theory as the theoretical orientation. Awareness of trafficking is rising in America, however there is still a lack of information on the topic. Estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancers make up 70% of all breast cancer incidences in the US. Cell cycle progression of ER-positive breast cancer is highly dependent on cyclin-dependent kinases (CDK) 4 and 6, the G1/S checkpoint kinases. Inhibitors of CDK4/6 have become a major addition to the clinical arsenal against ER-positive breast cancers. CDK4/6 inhibitor palbociclib (IBRANCETM) has been approved for the treatment of ER-positive breast cancers. However, palbociclib treatment eventually fails due to the development of resistance. Purpose and rationale: Deep Sternal Wound Infections (DSWI) are associated with morbidity rates and mortality rates as high as 10% -15% as well as significantly increased hospital costs. The purpose of this project is to decrease current rates of DSWIs in adults undergoing cardiac surgery at a large medical institution.

Synthesis of evidence: The literature shows a strong relationship between elevated HbA1C and DSWI. All articles reviewed for this proposal which implement a sternal vest intervention support its use to prevent DSWI.
