Parents’ Right-Wing Political Conservatism And Trans Teacher Bathroom Access In School: Ambiguity Is Threatening, Aaron F. Neitzel
Parents’ Right-Wing Political Conservatism And Trans Teacher Bathroom Access In School: Ambiguity Is Threatening, Aaron F. Neitzel
Theses and Dissertations
In the past several years, hundreds of legislative bills introduced across the U.S. have targeted transgender persons, including restricting bathroom use to one’s natal sex (Dey & Harper, 2022; Samar, 2016). Few studies have examined the public’s perceptions of transgender persons in schools accessing bathrooms that align with gender identity, rather than natal sex. This study focused on how three conservative, prejudicial political ideologies (i.e., Right-Wing Authoritarianism, Social Dominance Orientation, Need for Closure; see Jost et al., 2003) influenced the responding of parents of school-aged children when presented with a scenario regarding a hypothetical transgender woman P.E. teacher accessing the …
Single-Crystal Elasticity Of Earth’S Mantle Transition Zone Minerals And High Pressure-Temperature Phase Equilibrium Experiments On Martian Basalts, Wenyi Zhou
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Wadsleyite and ringwoodite are major minerals in the Earth’s Mantle Transition Zone. Global and local seismic studies have detected strong lateral variations in seismic velocity and anisotropy in the Mantle Transition Zone, reflecting temperature and possible composition variations. Interpretation of these seismic observations requires knowledge of thermoelastic properties of wadsleyite and ringwoodite with different compositions (water and Fe contents) under high pressure-temperature conditions. In this dissertation, we have measured single-crystal elastic properties of wadsleyite and ringwoodite under high pressure-temperature conditions by Brillouin spectroscopy. Based on our measurements and previous experimental results, we further model the effects of water and Fe …
Effect Of Dedicated Admission Medication Reconciliation On Patient Care In 100-Bed Acute Care Hospital, Judy Mcmanus
Effect Of Dedicated Admission Medication Reconciliation On Patient Care In 100-Bed Acute Care Hospital, Judy Mcmanus
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Medication reconciliations are often completed inadequately or inaccurately when patients are admitted to the hospital. Findings at the study site identified an average of two pharmacy interventions necessary per admitted patient to correct home medication lists after completion of the medication reconciliation.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was “In adult patients admitted to a 100-bed acute care hospital (P), how does use of the MATCH toolkit for medication reconciliation process steps (I), compared to the current process of home medication reconciliation completed by the physician prior to nursing or pharmacy team review (C) affect accuracy …
Most Recent Rupture On The Boulder Creek Fault Triggered Bedrock Landsliding In The Nooksack Watershed, Whatcom County, Washington, Abigail Catherine Underwood
Most Recent Rupture On The Boulder Creek Fault Triggered Bedrock Landsliding In The Nooksack Watershed, Whatcom County, Washington, Abigail Catherine Underwood
Dissertations and Theses
Catastrophic bedrock landslides with volumes ranging from 106 to 108 m3 contribute to rapid landscape evolution, often resulting in erosion rates that exceed the long-term average rates caused by tectonic uplift. Understanding the spatiotemporal trends of large bedrock landslides helps us understand previous drivers of landscape evolution as well as predict how the landscape will respond in the future. The Nooksack Watershed, Whatcom County, Washington, is particularly susceptible to large slope failures because of its high relief, seismic activity, local geology, and relatively abundant precipitation. Specifically, folded and faulted bedrock structures conducive to landsliding in addition to …
The Effects Of Segmenting Worksheets And Behavior Specific Praise On Independent Seatwork With Elementary Students, Lauren Peak
The Effects Of Segmenting Worksheets And Behavior Specific Praise On Independent Seatwork With Elementary Students, Lauren Peak
Dissertations
While the education system has seen many changes over the years due to COVID-19, one constant is that students must complete independent seatwork at certain times throughout the day. As teachers accommodate the many students in their classroom, an intervention that could increase students’ amount of academic production when doing independent seatwork would be mutually beneficial. For students, the increased contact with learning opportunities would provide the students means to increase fluency for that skill. Examining the effects of segmented and whole worksheets on production would, therefore, create additional learning opportunities.
This study sought to assess the effectiveness of the …
Mindful Musicians: Trait Mindfulness, Deliberate Practice, Anxiety And Depression In College Musicians, Sally S. Wynn
Mindful Musicians: Trait Mindfulness, Deliberate Practice, Anxiety And Depression In College Musicians, Sally S. Wynn
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background. Mindfulness is understood as a capacity to cultivate moment-to-moment awareness with a sense of nonjudgement, curiosity, and kindness. Anxiety and depression are prevalent in the undergraduate musician population, despite positive effects on mental health that are often associated with listening to music. This study explored factors of music practice including instrument category, practice time, and the use of deliberate practice techniques. Our objective was to test the relationships between dispositional mindfulness, musicianship, and mental health among college instrumental musicians. I hypothesized first, that dispositional mindfulness would be positively associated with musicianship; second, that mindfulness would be negatively associated with …
A Bright Idea: Assessing Stakeholder Impact Of Social Sustainability Strategies, Sara Theis
A Bright Idea: Assessing Stakeholder Impact Of Social Sustainability Strategies, Sara Theis
Dissertations
The performing arts industry is experiencing an awakening in terms of the need to integrate inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) into their practices. This is the result of calls for change in the industry from members of historically marginalized communities. The challenge is that in order for social sustainability strategies like IDEA to be effective, they need to integrate them into the organization’s culture (Serafeim, 2020). IDEA cannot be a checklist. Using stakeholder theory and resource-based view as theoretical foundations, this qualitative case study examines one exemplary organization that has differentiated on social sustainability for decades. In 27 open …
Driver Behavior Analysis Based On Real On-Road Driving Data In The Design Of Advanced Driving Assistance Systems, Nima Khairdoost
Driver Behavior Analysis Based On Real On-Road Driving Data In The Design Of Advanced Driving Assistance Systems, Nima Khairdoost
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The number of vehicles on the roads increases every day. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the overwhelming majority of serious crashes (over 94 percent) are caused by human error. The broad aim of this research is to develop a driver behavior model using real on-road data in the design of Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADASs). For several decades, these systems have been a focus of many researchers and vehicle manufacturers in order to increase vehicle and road safety and assist drivers in different driving situations. Some studies have concentrated on drivers as the main actor in …
Developing Carbon Quantum Dots As A Luminescent Material And Revisiting Ecl And Led Absolute Measurement Methods, Jonathan Ralph Adsetts
Developing Carbon Quantum Dots As A Luminescent Material And Revisiting Ecl And Led Absolute Measurement Methods, Jonathan Ralph Adsetts
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Luminescent materials play increasingly important roles in our lives. Improvements in these materials’ quantum efficiencies (QEs), costs and toxicity can greatly reduce the power consumption, price and environmental damage to the planet, respectively. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and luminescent materials exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) are two interesting materials in these aspects. Furthermore, measurements on electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and electroluminescence of these luminescent materials can quickly evaluate their performance for many applications. In this thesis, controlled CQD syntheses are revealed beneficial to luminescent materials applications. Their film ECL demonstrated relatively stable anionic and cationic radicals leading to high emission at …
Craft And Virtue In Plato's Early Dialogues, Cecilia Z. Li
Craft And Virtue In Plato's Early Dialogues, Cecilia Z. Li
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Ancient philosophers are preoccupied with the idea of craft (technê)—art, expertise, skill, and not infrequently translated as knowledge or science. The idea is often seen by ancient thinkers as the pinnacle of rational agency and offers them a vital paradigm for thinking about the world and our place within it. One longstanding tradition is the view that virtue shares important features with the sort of expertise involved in practicing a craft. In this thesis, I investigate the relationship between craft and virtue in Plato, focusing especially on the early dialogues. The overarching aim of this thesis is to …
Investigation Of Laser And Nonlinear Properties Of Anderson Localizing Optical Fibers, Cody Ryan Bassett
Investigation Of Laser And Nonlinear Properties Of Anderson Localizing Optical Fibers, Cody Ryan Bassett
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
In this dissertation, I investigate the possibility of lasing and nonlinear phenomena in completely solid-state transverse Anderson localizing optical fibers (TALOFs). I examine three areas within this range of topics. The research in nonlinear phenomena focuses on four-wave mixing (FWM). FWM is of high interest in TALOFs due to the fact that guided localized modes of the fiber each have different propagation constants, and thus unique possible FWM pairs can be generated from the same input pump beam. I demonstrate the generation of FWM in the TALOF by pumping it with 532 nm light into a localized mode and observing …
Convexity Of Regularized Optimal Transport Dissimilarity Measures For Signed Signals, Christian P. Fowler
Convexity Of Regularized Optimal Transport Dissimilarity Measures For Signed Signals, Christian P. Fowler
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Debiased Sinkhorn divergence (DS divergence) is a distance function of
regularized optimal transport that measures the dissimilarity between two
probability measures of optimal transport. This thesis analyzes the advantages of
using DS divergence when compared to the more computationally expensive
Wasserstein distance as well as the classical Euclidean norm. Specifically, theory
and numerical experiments are used to show that Debiased Sinkhorn divergence
has geometrically desirable properties such as maintained convexity after data
normalization. Data normalization is often needed to calculate Sinkhorn
divergence as well as Wasserstein distance, as these formulas only accept
probability distributions as inputs and do not directly …

Mary Greene Blumenschein was an award-winning painter and illustrator whose work focused on images of women at the beginning of the twentieth century, however, she is now a secondary and obscure figure in art history. …
Theoretical Studies Of Molecule-Surface Interactions And Dynamics, Yingqi Wang
Theoretical Studies Of Molecule-Surface Interactions And Dynamics, Yingqi Wang
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Gas-surface scattering involves the conversion of energy in different forms in the impinging molecule, possible bond breaking and forming, and the energy transfer across gas-solid interface. Possible energy dissipation channels include adiabatic energy transfer to the motion of surface phonons and non-adiabatic interactions with surface electron-hole pairs. A complete understanding of the interplay of energy dissipation and physical/chemical changes in the molecule is vital for many important applications such as materials fabrication and heterogenous catalysis.
Gas-surface encounters may occur where non-adiabatic effects are negligible. Two such systems were investigated, both with ample experimental data. One is concerned with the scattering …

Reclaiming Justice From Below: Victim Participation And Reparations In Post-Conflict Peru, Fiorella P. Vera-Adrianzen
Reclaiming Justice From Below: Victim Participation And Reparations In Post-Conflict Peru, Fiorella P. Vera-Adrianzen
Political Science ETDs
Since 2007, Peru’s Plan Integral de Reparaciones (PIR, Comprehensive Reparations Plan) has provided material, symbolic, individual, and collective reparations to victims of the civil conflict (1980-2000). Important differences in the implementation of reparations have emerged across time and space. Previous studies have examined factors conditioning the adoption and the effects of reparative justice, generally at the national level. How reparative processes unfold on the ground from design to implementation remains underexplored. Drawing upon original interviews, focus groups, participant observation, and archival research in three highly affected Andean regions (Apurímac, Junín, and Ayacucho) and in the capital city, Lima, I examine …

Maneuvering Mestizaje In Shakespeare's Tragicomedies, Andrea Phiana Borunda
Maneuvering Mestizaje In Shakespeare's Tragicomedies, Andrea Phiana Borunda
English Language and Literature ETDs
This project explores and wades through the implications of mestizaje in the murky depths of Shakespeare’s oceans. Disguises and mistakes in identities and in gender and “race” draw on the hybridity and indeterminacy of the early modern stage and its fluidity and lack of order to reflect an unhomed and unmediated formation of nationhood, diaspora, and (trans)global identities. Drawing on ecocritical and critical race theories, I contend the tragicomic works of Shakespeare expose and dismantle ecoracial fantasies of white male supremacy to curate a space of mestizaje for a new generation of BIPOC scholars.
An In Silico Study Of The Delta Opioid Receptor Using Small Molecules, Emily Dean
An In Silico Study Of The Delta Opioid Receptor Using Small Molecules, Emily Dean
Theses and Dissertations
The DOR is the least studied out of the three opioid receptors (Mu, Kappa, and Delta). The most is known of the Mu Opioid receptor (MOR) and the drugs that target it have led to the global opioid epidemic due to their adverse effects of tolerance and addiction. The DOR is not known for the same adverse effects and therefore, is a promising pharmacological target for the development of new opioid ligands. In this thesis, molecular modeling, simulations and other computational methods are introduced in Chapter 1 where these methods are used to study the activation mechanism of DOR (Chapter …
Crisis Communication In The Public Sector: Influences On Stakeholders’ Experience Of Psychological Effects As U.S.-Russia Tensions Rise, Elisabeth Shirk
Crisis Communication In The Public Sector: Influences On Stakeholders’ Experience Of Psychological Effects As U.S.-Russia Tensions Rise, Elisabeth Shirk
Theses - ALL
As war in Ukraine rages on and the U.S.-Russia relationship becomes increasingly hostile, the need to better understand public sector communication in times of international crisis is once again rising. For years, the public and private sectors have been treated largely the same in crisis communication research and practice. In the context of international crisis, specifically rising tensions between the U.S. and Russia, this study looks at where these differences lie and what that might mean for future research and practice.
In contribution to this broader topic, this study looks at the influence of domestic stakeholders’ perceptions of the Biden …
Urban Nesting Biology, Population Viability And Ecology Of The Willow Flycatcher, Empidonax Traillii, Stephanie Alexandra Byrne Doorly
Urban Nesting Biology, Population Viability And Ecology Of The Willow Flycatcher, Empidonax Traillii, Stephanie Alexandra Byrne Doorly
Dissertations and Theses
Reproductive success, in any species, relies both on the habitat utilized to reproduce and on the successful reproductive output of individual animals within a population. Populations in turn rely on the reproductive fitness of the individual. Whether populations remain stable, grow, or decline ultimately relies on the combined reproductive output of the individuals within that population.
We studied the Willow Flycatcher (Empidonax traillii; henceforth WIFL), a well-studied Neartic-Neotropical migrant passerine whose breeding range extends from the east to west coast of North America. Across much of their range, and in particular in the western regions, breeding population are …

A Ruff Day On The Road: How Relocation Affects Children Pre-K Through Third Grade And How A Picture Book Can Help, Bryant Miller
A Ruff Day On The Road: How Relocation Affects Children Pre-K Through Third Grade And How A Picture Book Can Help, Bryant Miller
Honors Projects
Moving their home from across town, a couple of states away, or overseas is something most will experience at least once in their lifetime. For all, moving is a big change, but for children, it can have lasting effects. Presumably, social skills, academic development, and family dynamics are all impacted when children move. But how and to what length are these factors influenced? This led to the original research question, how does relocation affect children and how can this transition during relocation be eased? After the first portion of the research was done to answer these questions, the research then …

I then combine this molecular isotopic approach with 16S and 18S rRNA sequencing to demonstrate the importance of gut microbiota as sources of essential amino acids to wild mammalian hosts. Next, I explore the roles of …
Status Seeking In Conspicuous Spectator Sports Consumption: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Yong Wang
Status Seeking In Conspicuous Spectator Sports Consumption: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Yong Wang
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
According to self-determination theory, people are intrinsically and/or extrinsically motivated to self-regulate their behavior (Deci & Ryan, 2012). Sport fans watch games for intrinsic rewards such as having fun and supporting a team, which, from the identity fusion perspective (Swann Jr et al., 2009), derive from their visceral sense of oneness with a team. Although they can choose to watch games at home, many fans spend money attending expensive games (e.g., major sports) and publicly display their experience. A plethora of sport management literature has addressed the intrinsic motivation for attending games; however, less attention has been paid to the …
