Stress And Its Interventions In Undergraduate College Students During Covid-19, Katie A. Jones
Stress And Its Interventions In Undergraduate College Students During Covid-19, Katie A. Jones
MSU Graduate Theses
Though stress in postsecondary education is a highly researched topic, the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has created many new questions that require answers. It is important to connect total perceived stress in undergraduate students with academic, COVID-19, and distance-learning factors and examine the effectiveness of interventions on stress and anxiety during the pandemic. This research determines the efficacy of mindfulness stress interventions (cognitive-behavioral, guided meditation, and music) for individual differences in stress, self- efficacy, and anxiety and links these variables to performance. This study measures levels of different types of stress (total perceived, distance-learning, academic, and COVID-19) for undergraduate …
The Effects Of Incarceration On Depression And Anxiety In Juveniles, Melanie Alfonso
The Effects Of Incarceration On Depression And Anxiety In Juveniles, Melanie Alfonso
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Adolescents within the juvenile system suffer from a multitude of physical and mental health issues. Previous studies have linked incarceration to poor health in juveniles, but very few have been able to claim incarceration is the cause for the mental health issues found in incarcerated juveniles. Whether juveniles go into the system with pre-existing mental health disorders or not, still many factors are associated with the development of mental disorders while incarcerated. Based on what the field knows and does not know about the link between juvenile incarceration and mental health, the goal of this study was to determine if …
The Effect Of Integrative Medicine Interventions On Patient Activation Measure, Rochelle F. Richards
The Effect Of Integrative Medicine Interventions On Patient Activation Measure, Rochelle F. Richards
All ETDs from UAB
Activated patients believe they have essential roles in achieving and maintaining their health. Patient activation is strongly related to improved clinical outcomes (Hibbard, 2017; Greene, 2013). The study’s primary purpose is to evaluate the use of Integrative Medicine Interventions (IMIs) and their relationship to patient activation levels; and to investigate the association between IMI protocols and patient activation levels on patient reported outcomes (PROs) for those with chronic diseases, specifically chronic fatigue and mental health-related conditions of anxiety and depression, using the principles of Integrative Medicine’s (IM) whole-person approach as the model of care in independent IM practices across the …
Coping During Covid: Child Technology Use And Coping During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Anissa Barnes
Coping During Covid: Child Technology Use And Coping During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Anissa Barnes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many children spend a significant amount of time using technology throughout the day. This was particularly true during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many activities that had initially been conducted in-person had to transition to an online modality. Some technology use could be seen as beneficial, whereas others could be seen as harmful. The present study used baseline data from a longitudinal study examining the effects of COVID-19 on child mental health to explore how technology had been used during the pandemic, as well as the perceived benefits and problems associated with its use. In total, 190 families (190 caregivers and …
What About Me: Understanding The Relationship Between Gender Identity And Social Anxiety, Jessica Allen
What About Me: Understanding The Relationship Between Gender Identity And Social Anxiety, Jessica Allen
All Master's Theses
Anxiety disorders have been researched primarily in cisgender populations until very recently. A clear gap in the literature exists for gender diverse individuals in this research. Through analysis of transgender and gender-diverse individuals’ accounts of their experiences with social anxiety, this study developed a scale specifically aligned with these encounters, titled the Allen Scale. Further, this study examined whether body dysmorphia symptoms have any correlation with social anxiety symptoms in either gender-diverse or cisgender populations. Results uncovered no clear statistical difference between the gender diverse group and the cisgender group on ratings of experienced discrimination, social anxiety or body dysmorphia …
"I Could Not Understand Anything They Said!": Non-Native English Speaking Instructors, Online Learning, And Student Anxiety, Katelyn Lee Mcclure
"I Could Not Understand Anything They Said!": Non-Native English Speaking Instructors, Online Learning, And Student Anxiety, Katelyn Lee Mcclure
Online Theses and Dissertations
Non-native English speaking (NNES) instructors are often rated lower within course evaluations and are typically criticized for their accents (Rubin, 1992; Subtirelu, 2015). Reasonings behind this have not been researched much in terms of online education, though the relevance of this topic is continuing to grow through online learning. The current experiments aim to determine if the presence of an NNES accent causes more learning anxiety compared to an instructor with a standard American accent. Two experiments were conducted to gauge participants’ anxiety level and learning performance. In both experiments, participants were given a set of four videos divided into …
Covid Fears And Social Anxiety In College Students, Clayton Crozier
Covid Fears And Social Anxiety In College Students, Clayton Crozier
Masters Theses
The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with numerous negative mental health outcomes such as social anxiety, and lead to a great deal of uncertainty. Intolerance of Uncertainty is a relatively new concept in the psychology literature and has begun to be studied in the context of anxiety. Literature has found a positive correlation between Intolerance of Uncertainty and several types of social anxiety. With these findings, researchers have begun to examine the COVID-19 pandemic to see how Intolerance of Uncertainty affects people’s mental health during the pandemic. Intolerance of Uncertainty may be a mediator between social anxiety and the fears …
Effects Of Mindfulness And Stress Management On Neurocardiovascular And Psychological Outcomes, Aditi P. Vyas
Effects Of Mindfulness And Stress Management On Neurocardiovascular And Psychological Outcomes, Aditi P. Vyas
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
There has been a higher prevalence of developing anxiety due to frequent episodes of stress among adults in recent years. Chronic anxiety can contribute to the prevalence of elevated blood pressure and hypertension. High anxiety and stress also contribute to overactivation of the sympathetic nervous system which can be quantified by increased muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). Sympathetic overactivation can lead to vasoconstriction and loss of arterial elasticity. Anxiety, MSNA, blood pressure, and arterial stiffness are all interconnected, thus studying these relationships is crucial to understand the underlying mechanisms for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Non-pharmacological and mind-body …
The Pathology And Etiology Of Philosophy, Lydia Tucke
The Pathology And Etiology Of Philosophy, Lydia Tucke
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
While much time is spent theorizing about philosophical concepts and theories, little thought has been given to the philosophy and psychology of philosophy itself. I argue that philosophy (or the act of philosophizing) should be considered a form of anxiety. I will examine whether or not philosophy should be evaluated as a mental disorder as well. Finally, I will explore the ways in which one can cope with the anxiety seen in philosophizing.
Physiological Effects Of Activity-Based Anorexia In Female Rats And An Overview Of Eating Disorders, Madelyn Uyemura
Physiological Effects Of Activity-Based Anorexia In Female Rats And An Overview Of Eating Disorders, Madelyn Uyemura
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The aim of this thesis is to bring AN to the foreground of conversation both in a scientific and sociological framework. Nearly 40 million Americans suffer from anxiety disorders, which is characterized by the feeling of a loss of control. In some cases, another disorder called anorexia nervosa (AN) can codevelop. AN is characterized by a refusal, and inability, to maintain a healthy body weight. Some suffering from anxiety may restrict caloric intake and increase exercise to cope with stress. This results in extreme caloric deprivation. AN can be modeled in rats using an activity-based anorexia (ABA) method. In …

UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic presented a unique opportunity to study the effects of increased screen time on student mental health. Honors students were an ideal group to study due to perfectionism, academic achievement, and educational aspirations. Emerging research suggests that increased screen time increases anxiety, but never had there been such a marked increase in screen time. Purpose: The aim of this pilot study was to observe the relationships between anxiety, screen time, and physical activity in Honors students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A REDCap survey, consisting of the GAD-7 measure of anxiety, screen time questionnaire, …
Association Of Anxiety And Executive Function With Attendance And Fitness Improvement In Cardiac Rehabilitation, William A. Middleton
Association Of Anxiety And Executive Function With Attendance And Fitness Improvement In Cardiac Rehabilitation, William A. Middleton
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Psychological factors such as anxiety and executive function (EF) may impact patient health outcomes from cardiac rehabilitation (CR). High anxiety and low executive function could reduce attendance or impede fitness improvements yielded from CR. Other research on exercise performance suggests, in certain circumstances, moderate levels of anxiety can be beneficial towards fitness gains. The current study evaluated the associations of anxiety and EF with attendance and fitness improvement in CR through retrospective analyses of two datasets from studies conducted at the University of Vermont Medical Center CR program. One sample contained a representative sample of CR patients, and the other, …
Status Anxiety And Overall Life Satisfaction Of Young Adults In The Bay Area, Samuel Casco
Status Anxiety And Overall Life Satisfaction Of Young Adults In The Bay Area, Samuel Casco
Global Public Health | Senior Theses
The published literature suggests social comparisons have significant negative effects on an individual’s psychological well-being. However, there is little to no research to suggest that an individual’s attainment of societal success has a relationship with one’s perceived life satisfaction.
A mixed-methods study involved young adults ages 18-29 in the Bay Area and were selected via a student researcher in the Global Public Health department of Dominican University of California. 115 participants completed surveys regarding self-perceived life satisfaction and status anxiety through the Qualtrics Survey Collection Tool. A Pearson’s Chi-Squared Test was conducted to find an association between life satisfaction and …

Social Media Use And Loneliness During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Katelyn Hughes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Social media has played a prominent role in society as a safe way of communicating and connecting with friends, family, and others during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. This study examined the general use of social media over the time of the COVID-19 pandemic and correlations with levels of loneliness, depression, anxiety, and stress in comparison to how people felt about their social media use before the pandemic. This study collected self-reported introspection on social media use during the pandemic and before the pandemic from Georgia Southern University students to compare if there are less feelings of …
Development Of A New Measure To Assess For Poverty-Based Stress: The Poverty-Based Stressor Scale (Pbss), Brianna N. Allen
Development Of A New Measure To Assess For Poverty-Based Stress: The Poverty-Based Stressor Scale (Pbss), Brianna N. Allen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Poverty, typically measured by economic well-being or depravation, is the result of systemic flaws built into the structure of society that adversely impact multiple dimensions of health and well-being. The specific stressors that disproportionately impact low-income individuals are called poverty-based stressors, and they encompass multiple categories of risk including physical, psychosocial, and financial risks. Currently, there is not an adequate measure of poverty-based stressors for low-income adults in the United States (U.S.), which restricts our ability to accurately determine the effects of poverty on important health-related outcomes. The purpose of this dissertation was to develop a psychometrically sound measure of …
