A Multiple Goals Perspective On Burnout Disclosure And Support Among Attending Physicians, Alison N. Buckley
A Multiple Goals Perspective On Burnout Disclosure And Support Among Attending Physicians, Alison N. Buckley
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
Burnout is a common experience among physicians and has been identified as a precursor to substance abuse and suicide ideation. When not addressed, burnout can have many negative personal, relational and professional consequences. Research about the burnout experience is limited due to the taboo nature of the topic. The present study used a multiple goals theoretical perspective to examine how physicians disclose burnout in order to access social support. Attending physicians from various specialties (N = 30) participated in one-on-one interviews and were asked to discuss their burnout experience, conversational goals during burnout disclosure, catalysts and barriers for disclosure, and …
Building Communication, Collaboration, And Self-Efficacy Among Elementary School Counselors Through Communities Of Practice, Garrett Rimey
Building Communication, Collaboration, And Self-Efficacy Among Elementary School Counselors Through Communities Of Practice, Garrett Rimey
Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies
There are few life-changing experiences like transitioning from elementary school to middles school. A new setting, new peers, new teachers, and new structures have been shown to elicit a myriad of emotions from students as they transition into middle school. A student’s academic record, accommodations, and other pertinent academic information follow a student into middle school; however, their social and emotional portfolio does not. Research has shown that students who are negatively impacted the most by transitioning into middle school also show their academics are negatively impacted, with title 1 students showing to be even more negatively impacted. However, school …
Effective Weather Messaging: Applying The Bad News Response Model To Hurricane Warnings, April S. Carr
Effective Weather Messaging: Applying The Bad News Response Model To Hurricane Warnings, April S. Carr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sweeny and Shepperd (2007, 2009) proposed the Bad News Response Model (BNRM), outlining three effective responses (i.e., Watchful Waiting, Active Change, Acceptance) as a function of the perceived controllability, likelihood, and severity of bad news. In the current study, we have adapted the BNRM, previously used in health-related scenarios, to explore the relationship between message content and responses in the context of hurricane warnings. Participants viewed hurricane warnings manipulated by severity (Category 1 vs. Category 5) and the inclusion of call-to-action statements (CTAs). The present study attempted to evaluate the effects of severity and controllability on participants’ engagement in desirable …
Integrating Persuasive Messaging Strategies Into Higher Education Early Alert Interventions To Improve Student Academic Behaviors, Joseph Gayheart
Integrating Persuasive Messaging Strategies Into Higher Education Early Alert Interventions To Improve Student Academic Behaviors, Joseph Gayheart
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
Higher Education is at a critical juncture as both public and private institutions seek to attract, retain, and graduate students. Institutions of higher education have traditionally developed communication and engagement strategies that become part of early warning/alert systems intended to increase student positive academic behaviors and improve student success. Persuasion can be a powerful tool in improving communication—especially when persuasive messages are deployed within the complex and ever-changing media landscape. Communication and persuasion scholars, for example, have applied persuasive messaging interventions in a variety of contexts but have yet to substantially apply these persuasive tactics in a higher education setting. …

Teaching College Athletes Social Media Appropriateness, Christina Murray
Teaching College Athletes Social Media Appropriateness, Christina Murray
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It may come as no surprise that Twitter is the most popular social media platform where student athletes, particularly men, post inappropriate content. Male student athletes’ inappropriate tweets have become such a problem for universities, athletic departments, and the NCAA that coaches are forced to place a ban on their players’ social media usage or hire third party monitoring systems. Unfortunately, these reactive responses have not alleviated the problem of athletes differentiating what content is appropriate or inappropriate to tweet on their Twitter accounts. Analysis of the data collected from scholarly journal articles, textbooks, and popular press articles revealed that …
The Effects Of Artificial Intelligence On Crisis Communication Rebuild Strategies, Rachel Ehlers
The Effects Of Artificial Intelligence On Crisis Communication Rebuild Strategies, Rachel Ehlers
Dissertations and Theses
Organizational crises can hinder companies beyond repair if the repercussions of the crisis are not offset with a communications strategy. The severity of the crisis may vary, however, the response strategy used by an organization is a crucial factor in deciding how damaging the situation will be for the business. The types of responses, as described in Situational Crisis Communication Theory (Coombs, 2007), have been studied in conjunction with both the responses’ crisis types and the communicator delivering the message. However, studies on the source of the crisis response have rarely gone past investigating the traditional response personnel. The current …

Conflict Communication In Law Enforcement, Don Zheng
Conflict Communication In Law Enforcement, Don Zheng
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This paper will focus on addressing conflict communication in law enforcement and what literature are available and the gaps within them. Conflict communication can range from the way's words are used, what words are used, and when those words are used when police officers interact with the public. Due to the lack of extensive research done within communication studies and law enforcement, this paper aims to aid in getting future research studies done within the professions. Conflict communication within law enforcement is a topic that should be talked about more to possibly lower the number of instances where physical and/or …
Shaped And Structured Fields For Underground Remote Sensing And Communication, Daniel Jerome Orfeo
Shaped And Structured Fields For Underground Remote Sensing And Communication, Daniel Jerome Orfeo
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
There is an urgent and longstanding need for non-contact subsurface imaging for the detection and identification of buried objects. This dissertation investigates the use of specialized electromagnetic (EM) remote sensing techniques for the detection of subsurface objects with little or no metal content, such as utility pipes, landmines, and improvised explosive devices. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a well-established remote sensing technology with widespread use [58]; despite this, significant performance limitations remain. First, a high degree of sensitivity is necessary to detect and locate nonmetallic targets. Second, target geometries and congested target configurations are difficult to identify and resolve. Third, …

Effective Postdischarge Communication From Nursing Staff To Mental Health Patients, Paula Renee Garrison
Effective Postdischarge Communication From Nursing Staff To Mental Health Patients, Paula Renee Garrison
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractMental health patients have a history of decreased follow-up appointments, poor diet, and medication noncompliance after discharge from inpatient facilities in addition to multiple co-morbidities, making a return to the community difficult. The practice problem was an increase in hospital readmissions of mental health patients within 30 days postdischarge due to inadequate post-discharge education and follow-up communication. Using Rodgers’s recovery on mental health theory and Revan’s action learning theory, a staff education program was developed to educate 10 nursing staff and two social workers on how to effectively implement postdischarge communication at 3 days and 30 days after discharge from …
