Measuring The Efficiency Of The Living Kidney Donor Candidate Evaluation Process, Steven Habbous Dec 2018

Measuring The Efficiency Of The Living Kidney Donor Candidate Evaluation Process, Steven Habbous

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Background: Living kidney donation is the ideal treatment for many patients with kidney failure. However, the living donor evaluation process has been criticized by patients and healthcare providers as inefficient. In the present research, we evaluated the inefficiency of the living donor evaluation process.

Methods: We conducted a scoping review of the literature and obtained data from large administrative datasets (1256 living donors) and medical chart review (849 prospectively recruited living donors across 12 transplant centres plus retrospective analysis of 1065 living donor candidates from a single centre).

Results: The median time to complete the entire evaluation was 9-11 months …

Evaluation Of A Health System’S Community Targeted Program For Individual’S With Increased Risk For Cardiovascular Disease And Diabetes, Phallon Lovelady Nov 2018

Evaluation Of A Health System’S Community Targeted Program For Individual’S With Increased Risk For Cardiovascular Disease And Diabetes, Phallon Lovelady

Doctoral Projects

Introduction: Lack of a program evaluation plan for a community targeted primary prevention program poses a risk for undefined program effectiveness. Conducting a systemic program evaluation helps determine program effectiveness and value. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the process of implementing a program evaluation during a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) scholarly project.

Objectives: The objectives of this project were to apply a scholarly approach to program evaluation utilizing evidence-based practice tools, demonstrate DNP Essentials and health systems leader competencies, and describe the steps taken during the process.

Methods: The CDC Framework for Program Evaluation (2011) was …

Evaluation Of Clinical Growth And Nursing Student Motivation In The Traditional Clinical Learning Environment, Jessica Barkimer Oct 2018

Evaluation Of Clinical Growth And Nursing Student Motivation In The Traditional Clinical Learning Environment, Jessica Barkimer

Dissertations (1934 -)

Evaluation of students in the traditional clinical learning environment is difficult. There remains a lack of standard guidelines to evaluate students using valid and reliable instruments as well as inconsistent processes with lack of interrater reliability standards between educators. A need exists for fair and consistent evaluation of nursing students. When the clinical educator uses a standard evaluation process and understands students’ motivation for learning, adaptations in teaching strategies and education on self-regulatory strategies can be implemented to enhance learning and measure clinical growth. This research study used a prospective, correlational, pre-test/post-test design to examine the relationship between student motivation …

Improving The Care Of Patients With Urinary Catheters Through A Quality Improvement, Ashley Nicole Holmstrom Jan 2018

Improving The Care Of Patients With Urinary Catheters Through A Quality Improvement, Ashley Nicole Holmstrom

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) significantly increases patient morbidity and mortality, length of stay, and organizational cost. In the 2 years prior to project implementation, the incidence of CAUTI increased by 15% in the local acute care, inpatient facility that served as the project site. Nursing leaders at the project site linked the increase in CAUTIs to a nursing knowledge deficit related to CAUTI prevention principles. The clinical question focused on the impact of CAUTI prevention staff training on the incidence of CAUTI, length of stay, and cost to the local acute care organization. After a review and critical appraisal …

Evaluation Of A Pharmacist Led Medication Reconciliation Process In Primary Care, Benjamin T. Gatlin Jan 2018

Evaluation Of A Pharmacist Led Medication Reconciliation Process In Primary Care, Benjamin T. Gatlin

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Medication safety should be at the forefront of public health initiatives. Medication reconciliations in primary care are key to successful, accurate, and safe medication use. Pharmacists are well positioned and educated to have an impact on medication safety by conducting reconciliations in primary care centers. Guidelines for training pharmacists on how to conduct medication reconciliations would be a useful tool for any health board striving to improve medication safety. This study uses observations from pharmacists currently conducting medication reconciliations in primary care to propose such guidelines in the form of a flow sheet. The resulting flow sheet and observations are …

A Program Evaluation Of A Colon Cancer Screening Program Using At-Home Fecal Immunochemical Tests With Certified Patient Navigators, Candace E. H. Brunk Jan 2018

A Program Evaluation Of A Colon Cancer Screening Program Using At-Home Fecal Immunochemical Tests With Certified Patient Navigators, Candace E. H. Brunk

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in this country, but 33% of these deaths could be prevented by screening. While colonoscopy is an effective screening tool, it is expensive, invasive, and prone to encounter considerable patient resistance. An alternative is to first screen those at-risk using at-home fecal immunochemical test (FIT) kits. This study determined factors associated with the return of these kits distributed by Kentucky CancerLink, a non-profit organization, and its affiliates to participants in a colon cancer prevention program.

Objectives: To identify factors associated with: completing a FIT kit, completing the kit with minimal …

Evaluation Of Anemia In Communities Served By Shoulder To Shoulder Global: A Cross-Sectional Study In Santo Domingo, Ecuador, Kevin Mercer Jan 2018

Evaluation Of Anemia In Communities Served By Shoulder To Shoulder Global: A Cross-Sectional Study In Santo Domingo, Ecuador, Kevin Mercer

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

BACKGROUND: Shoulder to Shoulder Global (STSG) recognizes anemia as a cause of morbidity among patients in Santo Domingo, Ecuador. Little research has been done to assess targetable anemia risk factors to serve as a foundation for future pharmacotherapeutic interventions. This study sought to identify risk factors for anemia in this population.

METHODS: Data obtained from existing patient records from January 1, 2010 to August 31, 2016 included hemoglobin/hematocrit, age, sex, pregnancy status, and presenting community. Chi-square tests compared means to examine risk factors associated with anemia. Poisson regression and incidence rate ratios (IRR) were used to estimate risk factors associated …

A Qualitative Evaluation Of A Substance Abuse Treatment Program For Athletes, Megan K. Lavoy Jan 2018

A Qualitative Evaluation Of A Substance Abuse Treatment Program For Athletes, Megan K. Lavoy

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

The focus of this study was to examine the experiences of two past participants of an athlete-specific drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. Researchers have discussed the vulnerability of an athlete population and prevalence of substance use among athletes ( e.g., Turrisi, Mastroleo, Mallett, Larimer, & Kilmer, 2007; Martens, Watson, Royland, & Beck, 2005). Some rehabilitation programs and specific approaches to treating substance abuse in athletes have started to emerge and are beginning to be discussed in the literature (Donahue et al., 2014). However, there remains a gap in the research of studies examining the experiences of these athletes who have …
