Looking at early childhood mental health from a policy perspective, this thesis describes practices that support children's social and emotional development and mental health prevention, intervention, and treatment approaches that can be used in preschool and elementary school settings; looks at young students' unmet mental health needs in both of these settings; and explores how schools can better address students' problem behaviors and mental health needs. To do so, it describes the field of Infant Mental Health and the supporting research; provides an overview of what the literature suggests preschools and elementary schools can do to support young children's social …

Deinstitutionalization And Its Discontents: American Mental Health Policy Reform, Olga Loraine Kofman Jan 2012

Deinstitutionalization And Its Discontents: American Mental Health Policy Reform, Olga Loraine Kofman

CMC Senior Theses

In 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed the Mental Retardation and Community Mental Health Centers Construction Act, establishing the beginnings of deinstitutionalization in the United States. By some counts, this Act was a stupendous policy success—by others, a dismal failure. 50 years later, no cohesive national mental health care policy has emerged to deal with increased rates of mental illness among the homeless and the incarcerated. However, California has made enormous strides to create a state policy which provides adequate services to the mildly, moderately, and severely mentally ill as well as adequate funding for those services through Proposition 63, …

Ideas have travelled a convoluted route throughout history, most paths remaining obscured until historical research untangles them. In Malaysia, the colonizing political machinations of the British from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century are often credited as a single force facilitated a wholesale movement of Eurocentric ideology into the region. It is taken as if Colonialism was a monolithic weapon which obliterated native ideology in a single swipe. Such a generalization has omitted the vital nuances and masked the actual path of history. This historical study revealed that one way in which European though merged into modern Malaysian ideology was an …

Mental Health Policy Through The Lens Of A Social Worker, Rebecca Marie Boog

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Due to stigma and lack of education, mental health agencies are often the first to receive budget cuts. After conducting research on mental health policy and policy advocacy, the researcher identified an opportunity for social work practitioners to improve mental health policy advocacy, based upon their unique perspective to witness the direct impact of policies on this population. Previous studies examining the relationship between information and communication technologies (ICTs) and mental health provide conflicting evidence regarding the possible benefits and detriments of ICT use on mental well-being. While ICTs may enhance social cohesion and motivate individuals to engage in new communication methods to strengthen social bonds and develop new social relationships, ICTs may also motivate individuals to retreat from the real world into a virtual one, thus severing established social ties. These positive and negative changes in social integration can have significant effects on mental health, as research has shown that social relationships and social engagement can drastically …

Predicting Disengagement From Care In An Early Psychosis Patient Cohort In The United States, Matthew Kruse

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The current study aims to assess baseline variables which may predict disengagement from care among patients with psychosis seeking treatment at an early intervention clinic in the United States. Based on literature published at sites outside the United States, we predict that duration of untreated psychosis, global assessment of functioning, forensic history, family contact, and substance abuse are predictive of disengagement during the first year of outpatient treatment. Patients were grouped according to whether or not they disengaged from care in a one year follow-up, and compared them on the above discrete and continuous variables with chi-square analysis and Student‟s …

Implementation & Evaluation Of A Peer Mentor Walking Program For Transitionally Housed Women In Missoula, Mt, Emily Jane Williams

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Single women and families with children are rapidly growing segments of the homeless population (NCH, 2009b). Homeless women generally report a lower quality of life, and are at a greater risk for various physical and mental health issues than their housed counterparts (NCH, 2009a). Mental illness, including depression and anxiety, impacts 20 to 25% of the homeless population in the United States, compared to 6% of the general population (NCH, 2009b). Social support can serve as a mediating factor between undesirable life events and depression (La Gory, Ritchey, Mullis, 1990). Unfortunately, the social support system among homeless individuals is sometimes …
