Misconceptions On Force And Gravity Among High School Students, Jane Ragasa Pablico
Misconceptions On Force And Gravity Among High School Students, Jane Ragasa Pablico
LSU Master's Theses
The goal of this study is to determine prevalent or dominant misconceptions on force and gravity among high school students. A survey instrument consisting of 12 qualitative questions requiring both answers and written explanations was used to gather students’ ideas and beliefs in situations involving force and gravity. Furthermore, it examined whether the proportion of students having misconceptions per question are correlated with gender and the type of school Physics background. The results show that the respondents have misconceptions that are similar to the misconceptions found in previous research. The number of misconceptions and the proportion of students having misconceptions …
Gender Differences And Cultural Contexts: Psychological Well-Being In Cross-National Perspective, Makiko Hori
Gender Differences And Cultural Contexts: Psychological Well-Being In Cross-National Perspective, Makiko Hori
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines gender differences in psychological well-being and its causal factors in 33 countries. Previous studies documented women’s vulnerability in mental health, and according to social role explanations, gender differences in mental health are attributed to gendered socialization and gender roles assigned to men and women. Gender differences in mental health thus should disappear when we see gender-neutral socialization and social roles. I incorporate contextual factors, such as the country-level gender equality and gender norms, and argue that the effects of gender and family-related factors at the individual-level on psychological well-being are conditional on societal-level factors in each country. …
Children Exposed To Intimate Partner Violence And The Social Construction Of Gender: A Qualitative Secondary Feminist Analysis, Jennifer Rae Mcdonald
Children Exposed To Intimate Partner Violence And The Social Construction Of Gender: A Qualitative Secondary Feminist Analysis, Jennifer Rae Mcdonald
Digitized Theses
Little is known about constructions or enactments of gender among children exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV). The purpose of this study was to examine this phenomenon, from the perspectives of mothers. A qualitative secondary analysis with a feminist approach provided the theoretical and methodological underpinnings for the development of this research. Study participants consisted of mothers involved in a group program who were interviewed prior to and at the completion of the program. Codes and memos guided the analysis and development of thematic categories, revealing four major themes: Normalization and Silencing of the Violence, Parroting Responses to Violence, Undeniable …
Recreating The Image Of Women In Mexico: A Genealogy Of Resistance In Mexican Narrative Set During The Revolution, Julia Maria Schneider
Recreating The Image Of Women In Mexico: A Genealogy Of Resistance In Mexican Narrative Set During The Revolution, Julia Maria Schneider
LSU Master's Theses
Traditionally, women have been relegated to the margins of society, history, and culture in male-dominated environments. Patriarchal systems have long denied women to play an appropriate role in nation building and to enter the public sphere, as is the case in Mexico. The female participation during one of the country’s most critical periods, the Mexican Revolution, has largely been ignored. Through situating their narratives into the context of the Revolution and describing the obstacles and limiting conditions that women experience, Mexican writers such as Elena Poniatowska and Laura Esquivel criticize the status quo of social and gender politics in Mexico …
From The Killing Fields To A Field Of Hope: The Portrait Of A Teacher's Dream, Kathy Ellen Smith
From The Killing Fields To A Field Of Hope: The Portrait Of A Teacher's Dream, Kathy Ellen Smith
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Few qualitative studies have been done in Cambodia, a country held hostage by the murderous Khmer Rouge in the 1970s. Still struggling to recover from these atrocities, Cambodia looks to education to aid in its redevelopment. This ethnographically-informed case study describes the professional literacy life of a female Cambodian primary school teacher in the post Pol Pot era. This study describes this woman’s professional and personal life as she strives to build literacy in a small village. Her work is considered in the context of her colleagues and village. Additionally, the research portrays forces that impact literacy development, ways in …
Gender Differences In Core Symptomatology In Autism Spectrum Disorders Across The Lifespan, Tessa Taylor Rivet
Gender Differences In Core Symptomatology In Autism Spectrum Disorders Across The Lifespan, Tessa Taylor Rivet
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A preponderance of males with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has been evident since the initial writings on the topic. This male predominance has consistently emerged in all ASD research to date in epidemiological as well as clinical populations. Despite this long recognized gender disparity in ASD, surprisingly there is a paucity of research addressing gender as it relates to core ASD symptom presentation. Gender differences may manifest with regard to symptom domains, severity, breadth, and so forth. The present research examined gender differences in ASD symptomatology in three populations: infants and toddlers at risk for developmental disability, children and adolescents, …
The Interplay Of Masculinities In School, Anne Marie Elliott
The Interplay Of Masculinities In School, Anne Marie Elliott
Digitized Theses
This thesis investigates the interplay of masculinities for a group of boys in one elementary school in south-western Ontario. It looks specifically at how these students negotiate and enact a dominant popular masculinity in response to a particular value system and regime that dictates gender hierarchies. The purpose of this study was to document, articulate, and construct knowledge and awareness about boys’ own understanding of the interplay of masculinities and peer group hierarchies at one particular site. Five Grade eight male students participated in semi-structured interviews providing insights into gender relations and peer group hierarchies and the nature ofhegemonic masculinity …
Women Leaders Resolving Conflict In Higher Education: A Feminist Epistemological Perspective, Maureen C. Silva
Women Leaders Resolving Conflict In Higher Education: A Feminist Epistemological Perspective, Maureen C. Silva
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In an American postsecondary context, conflict is inherent (Gianneschi & Yanagiura, 2006; Valian, 1999). Successful navigation of conflict in the academy is vital for those who aspire to leadership positions (Nadler & Nadler, 1987; Walters, Stuhlmacher, & Meyer, 1998). Presently, however, women face significant barriers to achieving success in higher education administration, including gender expectations for conflict resolution behavior (Bartunek, 1992; Bowles, Babcock, & McGinn, 2005; Gayle, Preiss, & Allen, 2002).
While a considerable body of literature exists for understanding gender negotiation, it remains rooted in a masculine paradigm (Kolb & Putnam, 2006; Shuter & Turner, 1997), and, as such, …
The Role Of Old-Fashioned Racism: Disaggregating Symbolic Racism In The United States, Leslie Curtis Cox
The Role Of Old-Fashioned Racism: Disaggregating Symbolic Racism In The United States, Leslie Curtis Cox
LSU Master's Theses
Old-fashioned, biological, or "Jim Crow" racism is viewed by many in the political science and psychology literature to be largely a relic of the past. In the post-segregation era it has been replaced as a political force by symbolic racism, although its residual effect still operates within symbolic racism as negative racial affect. Symbolic racism is thought of as a coherent belief system that describes whites‘ attitudes not only in the United States, but in some European democracies as well. This conceptualization of symbolic racism ignores the differences in the historical legacy of racism across different regional and demographic contexts. …
Visualising 'The Waste Land': Discovering A Praxis Of Adaptation, Sally Waterman
Visualising 'The Waste Land': Discovering A Praxis Of Adaptation, Sally Waterman
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This research examines the issues and visual processes that arise in the production of self-representations derived from literary texts. The construction of a series of photographic and video installations drawing upon T. S Eliot’s poem 'The Waste Land' (1922) allowed for the exploration and analysis of how literature functions as a device to represent autobiographical experience within my media arts practice. The study considered the relevance and usage of the literary source in relation to specific adaptation procedures, in terms of what complexities were encountered and how these were understood. Whilst orthodox film adaptation provided a theoretical framework for initial …
