Eros, Paideia And Arête: The Lesson Of Plato’S Symposium, Jason St. John Oliver Campbell

Commentators of Plato’s Symposium rarely recognize the importance of traditional Greek conceptions of Eros, paideia and arête in understanding Plato’s critique of the various educational models presented in the dialogue. I will show how Plato contests these models by proposing that education should consist of philosophy. On this interpretation, ancient Greek pedagogy culminates in a philosophical education. For this new form of education, the dialogical model supplants the traditional practices of kléos and poetic mimēsis, inextricably bound to archaia paideia and traditional forms of education. The ability to imagine literacy influences the way we historicize literacy and research its dilemmas and challenges. Recent trends in literacy theorizing and research forwarded by New Literacy Studies scholars such Deborah Brandt and Brian Street have converged around contextualized approaches to literacy, directing educators to new imaginings of both our literacy-present and our literacy-past. This study draws upon this expanded literacy framework to theorize literacy in the lives of antebellum black women religious of New Orleans. The use of technology, such as electronic mail and the Internet, is becoming the norm in many workplaces. This is especially true in academic workplaces. The present study examined several issues related to electronic mail use and job satisfaction for employees within a higher education workplace. Results of the study found that administrative level employees both sent and received more email than non-administrative level staff. Job satisfaction was not found to be related to the amount of email sent or received. No difference in job satisfaction was found between employees at the main campus versus regional locations, nor was there …

Researchers and practitioners alike are debating which procedures are most effective in assessing for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Classroom observations are frequently used in ADHD assessments, and significant differences in observed behavior between children with and without ADHD have been repeated in numerous studies. Other recent research has focused on lab-based observations as an alternative to classroom observations. Analog methods have also been found to differentiate between ADHD and non-ADHD children. The primary purpose of this study was to determine and compare teacher and principal perceptions of dispositional characteristics needed by middle school teachers to be most effective in the classroom. Furthermore, this study ascertained the influence of gender and experience on the perceptions of respondents. Descriptive statistics and a 2 X 2 X 5 factorial design were used to collect and analyze the data for the study. Six hundred and sixty-one public school teachers from Indiana were randomly selected from schools configured grades 6--8 to participate. Discourse is described as ideology found within text such as websites, brochures and application packages. This study examined the influence of Chinese American parents on their children's ethnic identity. Two research questions were designed to examine these relationships: Does the personal construct of Chinese American parents influence their children's ethnic identity and does the length of stay in the United States of Chinese American parents influence children's ethnic identity? This study explores 15 Chinese international students' perceptions and concerns regarding Chinese traditional education, Canadian education, and the Quality Education reform in China conducted by means of an ethnographic research method. Data was collected through one-on-one semi-structured interviews. Students' learning experiences in both China and Canada and knowledge of the Quality Education reform program in China help us to understand this large-scale and ongoing educational reform and indicate some issues with and lend some suggestions to the implementation of the reform from a unique perspective. The main objective of this study was to examine the extent to which peer education could contribute to the effectiveness of a comprehensive, teacher-delivered primary school HIV prevention programme in Kenya. The study used a quasi-experimental design with sequential cross-sections of standard 6 and 7 students, sampled pre and nine months post implementation of the programme. Peer supporters from each experimental school were recruited and trained. Assessment then involved a pre-post test completion using both questionnaires and individual and group interviews to examine the effects of the PSABH programme on peer supporters and students. This study examines the perspectives of critical literacy of five junior grades teachers. Lewison, Flint, and Van Sluys' (2003) four dimensions of critical literacy provided a framework for examining teacher beliefs and practices. From questionnaires and in-depth interviews, this case study found that there are gaps in teachers' understanding, and teaching of critical literacy. These teachers teach students to disrupt the commonplace and examine multiple viewpoints, but they do not include focus on sociopolitical issues and action oriented strategies that promote social justice. This study explores the cultural conflicts experienced by Chinese international students in the University of Windsor. By interviewing fifteen Chinese international graduate students from different departments, this ethnographic study examines the cultural conflicts Chinese international graduate students confronted within their Canadian university experience. It was found that cultural conflicts play an important role for Chinese international students, both positive and negative, in achieving academic success. This study also discusses the communicative and interactive strategies Chinese international students use to adapt to a Canadian university. Teaching About Sexual Orientation To Grade Nine Students: Shared Experiences From Secondary School Health Teachers In Southwestern Ontario., Claytan D. Bondy

The objective of this research was to examine the experiences of teachers regarding the teaching of sexual orientation to grade nine physical and health education students in Ontario. A Sexuality Education Survey was developed and conducted in one school board in southwestern Ontario. The resulting sample consisted of 18 completed surveys (response rate of 35%). Results indicated that most teachers do teach some topics related to sexual orientation such as health issues (56% of teachers), stereotypes (72% of teachers), and major definitions (67% of teachers). The purpose of this study was to investigate how my use of discourse and journal writing affected students' attitudes and conceptions of mathematics in a 5th grade mathematics classroom. The nature of students' strengths and weaknesses with mathematics using discourse and journal writing were described. The American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) population is challenged with diverse learning styles, high-risk behaviors, low economic status, low enrollment predictions, lower total education achievement, or lower graduate level higher education. However, AI/AN doctoral degree recipients may be successful due to diverse sources of support. Data from 1992 to 2002 SED was analyzed using Chi square tests to observe the trends of the total number of AI/AN women receiving doctoral degree compared to trends to African-American/Black, Hispanic, Asian, White, Other / Unknown women doctoral degree recipients.
