This thesis presents a self-stabilizing distributed maximum flow algorithm for a network G = (V, E), where V is a set of nodes in the network and E is a set of edges in the network. The algorithm has two phases: reset phase and preflow-push phase. Fault-tolerance is achieved by using a self-stabilizing paradigm that uses non-masking fault-tolerance embedded repetitions within the algorithm. Two techniques are used in the algorithm, Counter flushing is used to synchronize the network; both local checking and local correction are used to compute the maximum flow of the network. A laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate thermal and fluid flow behavior in an unsaturated porous medium. The experiment consisted of a bed of homogeneous glass beads packed uniformly in a Lexan rectangular box. A cylindrical heat source was located horizontally in the middle region of the bed and the bed was heated to steady state conditions. Water was then introduced uniformly through square nozzles located over the fill material for short periods of time. This archival study examined the accuracy of the Denver II Screening Test for children under two years of age. Accuracy was determined by comparing results from the records of eighty-two children on the Denver II Screening Test, to standards established by the American Psychological Association. These standards were: Specificity, sensitivity, and positive predictive value. Concurrent validity was established through the use of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. The results indicated that the Denver II Screening Test was accurate for children under two years of age, especially when using the more sensitive approach in detecting children by combining questionable results …

This study reports on the experimental modeling of fluid flow in plant xylem. Three experiments were conducted to determine pressures and velocities in the conducting vessels of the xylem portion of a plant using corn syrup as the working fluid and Plexiglas tubing as the test section. The first experiment was performed using a straight duct to model the flow in a xylem vessel without any obstructions. This paper is a classification of finite groups satisfying the converse of Lagrange's Theorem. We begin by showing a series of inclusions of classes of finite groups: p-groups {dollar}\subseteq{dollar} nilpotent {dollar}\subseteq{dollar} supersolvable {dollar}\subseteq{dollar} polycyclic {dollar}\subseteq{dollar} solvable. The crucial point of the paper consists of the proof that the class of supersolvable groups is contained in the class of converse Lagrange groups while the class of polycyclic groups is not. While human caring remains an important aspect of nursing, the financial pressures facing the healthcare economy calls for nurses to work more cost-effectively. Using Watson's model of Human Care as the conceptual framework, this study looked at the relationship between attitudes toward economic issues and human caring in perioperative nursing; The NCAS and BHNAS self-reporting scales consisted of a total of 80 items that measured nurses' attitudes regarding cost-effective practice and caring. The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the dining habits, preferences, and expectations of 1,012 young patrons of fast food restaurants in Singapore and Las Vegas. The Singapore respondents were students from a Pre-university and SHATEC, a hospitality industry vocational institute. In Las Vegas, the respondents were from the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration, University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV); Overall results indicated that there existed more similarities between Pre-university and UNLV students than between Pre-university and SHATEC students. Species richness, density, and abundance in Coleogyne ramosissima (blackbrush) shrublands were compared on 15 elevational transects in the Spring and Sheep Mountain Ranges adjacent to the Las Vegas Valley. Coleogyne shrublands shared relatively broad upper and lower ecotones with Pinus-Juniperus and Larrea-Ambrosia vegetation, respectively. Lower Coleogyne ecotones generally had the highest species richness, and Pinus-Juniperus woodlands had the lowest species richness; Detrended correspondence analysis (DECORANA) suggested that elevation and soil depth were significantly associated with the distribution of stand and species groups identified from two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) in the Spring and Sheep Mountain Ranges. Lower basin areas in the Las Vegas Valley contain soils with large amounts of soluble minerals. Dissolving and leaching processes due to water intrusion into foundation soils containing soluble minerals can cause a volume reduction of the soil which in turn causes structural stress. Soil improvement recommendations for soluble soils are based upon the amount of soluble minerals of a parent soil. This study reports the results of research to develop a correlation between the electrical conductivity and the concentration of soluble minerals in aqueous soil extracts. A numerical simulation study is reported on the thermodynamic performance of several non-CFC refrigeration devices. The study includes complex compound absorption, Brayton, Stirling, and thermoelectric devices. Comparisons are made to the more commonly applied vapor compression systems, including those using R-134a. The study examines the effect of thermal resistances between the device and the heat rejection or heat absorption space. A cool side temperature difference between 0 and 20{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C is investigated, and this temperature difference accounts for both thermal resistance and cooling load. An outside temperature ranging between 35{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C and 46{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C is considered in the calculations, with a cooled space …

This paper examines Cold War influences on early post-World War II presidential elections, Barry M. Goldwater's rise to Republican presidential nominee, and the contribution of foreign policy issues to the Arizonan's defeat in the 1964 presidential election. World War II and the Cold War increased the importance of foreign policy considerations in presidential elections, and from 1948 through 1964, every major party nominee advocated the militant containment of communism. Goldwater was an ardent Cold Warrior, who had developed staunch convictions on domestic and foreign matters. The need to meet the demand for high quality digital images, with comparatively modest storage requirements, is driving the development of new image compression techniques. This demand has spurred new techniques based on time to frequency spatial transformation methods. At the core of these methods are a family of transformations built on basis sets called "wavelets." The wavelet transform permits an image to be represented in a substantially reduced space by transferring the energy of the image to a smaller set of coefficients. Mountain generation can be considered a part of the general theory of surface estimation; In this thesis, two methods have been presented to generate fractals--fast Fourier method and a new generalized stochastic subdivision method. Also, a new surface estimation method has been introduced that deals with points of unequal powers. NERVA-Derived Reactor Coolant Channel Model for Mars Mission Applications presents the results of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study of a 1.3m NERVA-Derived Reactor (NDR) coolant channel; The CFD code FLOW-3D was used to model the flow of gaseous hydrogen through the core of a NDR. Hydrogen passes through the core by way of coolant channels, acting as the coolant for the reactor as well as the propellant for the rocket. Experiments were conducted in a sand tank to determine the influence of grain size of a porous medium and residual water saturation on the movement of diesel fuel. Three different grades of sand (#12, #20, and #30 grades with mean grain diameters of 0.178cm, 0.08cm, and 0.056cm respectively) were used in the experiments. A water table was simulated and the sand above the capillary fringe was initially at residual water saturation. Diesel fuel (5 liters) was leaked into the sand, above the capillary fringe. A method has been developed for determination of formaldehyde in air sample extracts by ion exclusion and ion exchange separation followed by amperometric detection. Optimum eluant compositions and separation columns for the best separation have been determined, as well as the optimum working electrode, electrolytes, and applied potentials for the best detection. An internal standardization was used to correct for detector drift. An interference study was performed for organic acids, other aldehydes, and alcohols. Old French Borrowings in "The Owl and the Nightingale" ascertains the quantity and nature of Old French words present in this thirteenth-century Middle English poem. Patterns of borrowing, whether source-based or subject-based, are identified and problematic words, such as cognates, are investigated for probable language of origin. These patterns are then examined for what they may reveal about the author and audience of "The Owl and the Nightingale." Included is an appendix listing each borrowed term and cognate in alphabetical order with definitions and parts of speech.

Hydrostratigraphic Units Within The Alluvium And Tertiary Volcanics Of East Central Yucca Flat, Nevada Test Site, Craig Thomas Shirley

Lithologic and geophysical log data from 46 boreholes in East Central Yucca Flat, Nevada Test Site, are used to develop lithostratigraphic and hydrostratigraphic columns. Non-zeolitized volcanic lithostratigraphic units geologically correlate to hydrostratigraphic units. Zeolitized volcanic lithostratigraphic units are combined into a single hydrostratigraphic unit. No systematic trend of porosity or permeability was found in the alluvium which comprises the uppermost hydrostratigraphic unit. Profiles of mean porosity vs lithostratigraphic elevation for 11 lithostratigraphic units are presented. Nuclear test cavities, rubble chimneys and collapse craters collectively comprise a fourth hydrostratigraphic unit.

A slurry heat exchanger is simulated as part of the Solvent Refined Coal-I plant to preheat the coal and solvent slurry before hydrogen injection. The shell and tube heat exchanger is oriented vertically with upward slurry flow on the tube side to minimize the localized solid sedimentation in individual tubes. Education teachers who attended an intensive training course in Computer Aided Learning (CAL) were surveyed to determine their subsequent use of computers in the classroom, what factors were influential in their computer use, and the reasons for taking the training course. Teachers reported an increase of computer use after the training course. Several factors were related to their computer use including available resources, administrator support, educational levels, teacher belief in computer effectiveness, teacher competence in CAL, and available budget money. Personal interest in CAL was ranked highest for why they attended the course with administrator request being ranked the lowest. …
