Design Of Deadlock Detection And Prevention Algorithms In Distributed Systems, Ramesh Dutt Javagal

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A distributed system consists of a collection of processes which communicate with each other by exchanging messages to achieve a common goal. One of the key problems in distributed systems is the possibility of deadlock. Processes are said to be deadlocked when some processes are blocked on resource requests that can never be satisfied unless drastic systems action is taken. Two distributed deadlock detection algorithms handling multiple outstanding requests is proposed and are proven to be correct: it detects all cycles and does not detect false deadlocks. The algorithms are based on the concept of chasing the edge of the …

A Comparison Study Of Two Alternative Education Programs On Selected School-Related Attitudes, Rebecca Ann Albiston

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examined two alternative education programs designed to encourage at-risk students to remain in school. The purpose was to identify the ability of each program to change the school-related attitudes and orientations that may contribute to the student's dropping out of school (school and teacher bonding, academic self-concept, perception of opportunity, self-esteem); In addition to the five dependent variables measured, the number of credits earned as well as the holding power of the program, were examined and compared between the two groups as indication of educational engagement. The study was conducted as a comparison between the two programs and …
