Aspects Of Some Compacted Campground Ameliorating Practices, Keith Foster
Aspects Of Some Compacted Campground Ameliorating Practices, Keith Foster
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if the direct mechanical manipulation of compacted campground soils, with and without the addition of organic materials and the planting of grasses, had any long lasting effect on the amelioration of these deteriorated campsites. An attempt was also made to determine the natural recovery time for East Texas sandy loam soils using the campground closure method. Closure or partial (seasonal) closure of campsites reduced compaction to an acceptable level in three years. Roto-tilling alone was the least effective treatment. Roto-tilling and the addition of bark or chips to maintain the loose soil …
An Architectural Answer To A New Format For Education, Nicholas C. Markovich
An Architectural Answer To A New Format For Education, Nicholas C. Markovich
Architecture and Planning ETDs
Architecture should be a physical response to the needs and requirements of human beings. It can enhance and compliment the functional, aesthetic and mental requirements for those it's intended to serve. This architectural response comes, usually, in answer to a philosophy or fulfills a method of purpose. This thesis is a study of educational philosophies and alternative educational philosophies for the future. A viable alternative for the future is chosen and applied to a prototypical architectural solution.
In this paper, research is done, to gather knowledge of the background of various societies' attitudes toward education. This author studies what directions …
Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht
Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Leaf epidermal transmittance of ultraviolet radiation (280-400 nm) was examined in several plant species to determine the capability of the epidermis to attenuate solar ultraviolet radiation. Epidermal samples were mechanically isolated and examined with a spectroradiometer/integrating sphere for transmittance. A survey of 25 species exposed to natural insolation was conducted. Although the species differed in life form, habitat type, and epidermal characteristics, epidermal transmittance was generally less than 10%. Ultraviolet radiation was attenuated 95 to 99% in more than half of the species. In 16 species, flavonoid and related pigments in the epidermis accounted for 20 to 57% of the …

Petrology Of The Rockport Quarry Limestone (Middle Devonian Traverse Group) Alpena, Presque Isle And Montmorency Counties, Michigan, Charles Willard Cookman
Masters Theses
The basal unit of the dominantly carbonate Traverse Group, the Bell Shale, is gradationally overlain by the Rockport Quarry Limestone which has a thickness of approximately 14 m. The Rockport Quarry Limestone is composed of a dark unrestricted marine subtidal organic-mud packstone facies, comprised of an algal-mat-bearing coral packstone subfacies and a shallower water crinoid-bryozoan grainstone subfacies; a shoal forming stromatoporoid biolithite facies; and a lagoonal micrite facies comprised of a subtidal dense subfacies containing gastropods, ostracods, and calcispheres, and an Intertidal to supratidal fenestral subfacies. The local facies tract reconstructed for the Rockport Quarry Limestone is interpreted to be …
Evaluation Of In-Furrow And Foliar Insecticidal Treatments For The Control Of Thrips (Thysanoptera) On Seedling Cotton In Tennessee, Gayle Franklin Bailey
Evaluation Of In-Furrow And Foliar Insecticidal Treatments For The Control Of Thrips (Thysanoptera) On Seedling Cotton In Tennessee, Gayle Franklin Bailey
Masters Theses
In-furrow and foliar insecticides are the two most common treatments used to control injurious levels of thrips on seedling cotton. Six in-furrow insecticidal treatments and seven foliar insecticidal treatments were applied at four different locations in the spring of 1976 in the West Tennessee area. These treat-ments were evaluated in regard to thrips control on seedling cotton and also their effect upon plant populations, plant heights, and plant vigor. In-furrow treatments were applied at planting while foliar sprays were applied after the cotton seedlings had emerged. Whole-plant samples were taken from all treated plots exactly one week after the foliar …

The Effects Of Ultrasonic Vibration, Tension And Torsion On The Charge Acceptance Of The Alkaline Silver Electrode ; Ii. Potentiostatic Studies Of The Oxide Growth Rate Law For The Alkaline Silver Electrode ; Iii. The Determination Of Ionic Transport In Silver Oxide Using Radiotracer Techniques With Ag[Superscript 110m], Reed Harold Chase
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of ultrasonic vibration on the anodic oxidation of silver foil in KOH was studied. An increase in charging capacity of approximately 20% was found to be the result of cavitation erosion. Silver wire was exposed to tension and torsion during oxidation but no change in charge acceptance was caused by these stresses. The oxide growth rate on silver foil electrodes was compared to rate equations that have been proposed for other metals. Uhlig's equations for the growth of semiconductor oxides was found to describe most of the data. The data did not fit other rate equations. Determination of …
Recognition Thresholds For The Spectrally Opponent Neural Network In The Human Visual System, Douglas Smith
Recognition Thresholds For The Spectrally Opponent Neural Network In The Human Visual System, Douglas Smith
Theses
Recognition thresholds for an alphanumeric resolution test object of differing target/background chromaticities and equal luminosities were determined. Combinations of the four psychologically unique hues were studied, and those pairs corresponding to the green-red and yellow-blue opponent neural systems were found to give the highest visibilities. Equivalent achromatic contrasts for each of the presented color pairs were determined, and comparison of the results with achromatic data of other researchers shows clearly that the spectrally opponent neural network in the human visual system is much less efficient in processing spatial information than is the spatially opponent (achromatic) neural network.

Development And Evaluation Of Self-Paced Instructional Units For Two Dendrology-Silvics Coures In Forestry, John Glenn Palmer
Masters Theses
Self-paced instructional units were developed, used, and evaluated in two dendrology-silvics courses. This new teaching scheme: (1) completely replaced the group-paced, lectured laboratory sessions with self-paced, indoor, slide-tape programs in Dendrology and Silvics of the Gymnosperms (Forestry 3050), and (2) supplemented the group-paced, lectured fieldtrips with a self-paced, taped, fieldtrip program in Dendrology and Silvics of the Woody Angiosperms (Forestry 3040). The study was divided into two major phases: (1) development of the instructional units, and (2) evaluation of the instructional units. The development phase was concerned with: (1) selection of appropriate instructional materials; (2) preparation of the instructional units; …

One system included a winter pasture phase, a spring-summer pasture phase, and a finish-ing phase. The other system consisted of a drylot silage phase and a finishing phase. During the winter, the steers grazed their respective pastures of fescue and clover. The animals grazed their spring-summer pasture with no supplemental feed. At …
Effect Of Altitude On The Peripheral Degradation Of Thyroxine In The Uinta Ground Squirrel (Citellus Armatus), Stuart K. Ware
Effect Of Altitude On The Peripheral Degradation Of Thyroxine In The Uinta Ground Squirrel (Citellus Armatus), Stuart K. Ware
Theses and Dissertations
Various methods were employed to detect changes in the peripheral degradation of thyroxine (T4) in adult Uinta ground squirrels (Citellus armatus) collected at two different altitudes (5400 and 9000 feet.) Plasma half-life of injected T4-125I (tl/2) was significantly decreased with altitude, as was T4-125I distribution space (TDS) and T4 degradation and secretion rate (TSR). In vitro deiodination of T4-125I by heart homogenates was not affected, while urinary excretion of thyroxine derived iodide was increased at high altitude 44-70 hours post-injection. Both total and free serum T4 concentrations were reduced at high altitude, although not significantly. The cause of the reduced …
Potential Diets For Carp Production, Rex Carlton Infanger
Potential Diets For Carp Production, Rex Carlton Infanger
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of raising carp on pig manure and coli, Brassica campestris. The use of pig feces as a source of fish food has been questioned by researchers (Hickling 1968). Coli was selected for dietary intake by fish since it is used for human consumption by the Indians of Guatemala. Commercial fish food (Silver Cup) was used for a control diet. These diets were both combined and used as a single source of food.

The Manuel Areu Collection Of 19th Century Zarzuelas, Mary Caroline MontañO
Music ETDs
In November of 1952, a collection of musical and dramatic manuscripts were discovered on a garbage dump in the mountainside mining town of Jerome, Arizona. They were donated to the University of New Mexico and stored at Zimmerman Library until 1973 when they were transferred to the Fine Arts Library. The majority of the manuscripts were discovered to be handcopied orchestral parts and scores of 19th-century Spanish zarzuelas with handcopied or printed librettos. The original owner of the collection was Manuel Areu (1845-1944?), singer, director and producer of the zarzuelas.
This thesis attempts to provide an historical review of the …
Spatial And Temporal Partitioning Between Sympatric Rodents: Zapus And Peromyscus, Emma Bernice Speer
Spatial And Temporal Partitioning Between Sympatric Rodents: Zapus And Peromyscus, Emma Bernice Speer
Theses and Dissertations
Partitioning space and time by seemingly sympatric rodents, Zapus princeps and Peromyscus maniculatus, were examined as possible mechanisms allowing coexistence. The two populations were studied in Central Utah with an electrically monitored grid. Spatial separation of individuals and the populations minimized confrontations and created local allopatric distribtuions. Temporal partitioning was not used as a mechanism to allow coexistence and was apparently independent of spatial partitioning. The Peromyscus population was composed primarily of males which may have been due to less favorable habitat and/or presence of Zapus. The data show that Peromyscus tend to avoid Zapus, possibly due to deleterious aggressive …
