Evaluation Of Rapid Reading Hay Moisture Meters For Field Use, Joseph Keith Mcdonald Dec 1976

Evaluation Of Rapid Reading Hay Moisture Meters For Field Use, Joseph Keith Mcdonald

Masters Theses

An instrument for use by farmers and agricultural research workers to quickly, accurately, and economically determine the moisture content of hay in the windrow would significantly improve the efficiency of forage crop production. However, no method or technique has been shown to be a successful tool for obtaining such determinations simply, precisely, and with easily portable equipment. An experiment was designated to field test a commercially available conductance-type moisture meter and to identify needed revisions of the meter or a measuring technique that might improve its accuracy. An experimental conductance-type meter was also built and tested in an attempt to …

Variation In American Sycamore (Plantanus Occidentalis L.) On The Western Highland Rim Of Tennessee, George Samuel Foster Jr.

Masters Theses

The objective of the study was to evaluate natural variation in specific gravity, fiber length, total extractives, and rooting ability of mature stem cuttings of American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L.) growing on upland sites on the western Highland Rim in Middle Tennessee. Twelve upland trees were selected which had a minimum age of 12 years at breast height; for comparison purposes, an equal number of bottomland trees were selected which were also at least 12 years old at breast height. The upland trees were all located on disturbed sites with acid to highly acid soils. The first 12 years growth …

Honey Marketing By Tennessee Beekeepers, Kimball M. Kennedy Iii. Dec 1976

Honey Marketing By Tennessee Beekeepers, Kimball M. Kennedy Iii.

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to; (1) delineate the structure of the marketing system for Tennessee honey, and (2) determine the size, scope and nature of Tennessee's beekeeping associations. A purposive stratified sample of 51 Tennessee beekeepers was personally interviewed. In addition, a mailed questionnaire was sent to each of the beekeepers' associations. The surveyed beekeepers were classified as hobbyist (1-39 colonies), part-time (40-299 colonies), and commercial (300 plus colonies). The data were analyzed using fre-quency distributions, condescriptive, cross-tabular, and breakdown information which was retrieved from the SPSS computer program. The average sample of beekeepers was 54.3 years old …

A Comparative Analysis Of Selected Tennessee 4-H Standards For The Years 1965 And 1975 With Projections To 1981, James A. Batsford

Masters Theses

Four-H, the youth development phase of Cooperative Extension, has grown to be one of the largest youth organizations in the world, and enrolls four million boys and girls annually in its citizen build-ing projects and activities. Four-H in Tennessee involved 166,390 youth in 1975, but had a much larger potential. To bolster enroll-ments, 4-H Standards were developed in the mid-1960's. After ten years it was felt that the Standards might need re-evaluating. There-fore the purpose of this study was to comparatively examine Tennessee 4-H Club data for 1965 and 1975 regarding participation, organization and leadership, considering the utility of the …

Fuel Consumption Of Gasoline And Diesel Tractors When Used With Selected Implements In West Tennessee, Roger Garland Carpenter Dec 1976

Fuel Consumption Of Gasoline And Diesel Tractors When Used With Selected Implements In West Tennessee, Roger Garland Carpenter

Masters Theses

The rate of fuel consumption was measured for both gasoline and diesel tractors in size classes for use with two-, four-, and six-row implements. Tractors were operated at four different speeds with various sizes of the following implements: moldboard plow, tandem disc, planter, and cultivator. Fuel meters were designed and constructed to measure the amount of fuel consumed for gasoline and diesel tractors during field opera-tions. The fuel consumption was measured volumetrically by using systems of electrically-actuated solenoid valves to control the flow of fuel into and out of graduated cylinders. The moldboard plows in almost every instance required the …

A Partial Analysis Of The 1975-76 Tennessee Extension Family Life Survey, Virginia Clark Cobb

Masters Theses

A total of 829 homemakers was interviewed by Extension home econo-mists in; the 1975-76 Family Life Survey for the purposes of characterizing selected Tennessee families and studying relations of certain family vari-ables and family characteristics. Variables had to do with homemakers' statements regarding their families' interaction and communication, self-esteem and family rules. Homemakers selected adjectives for each of the variables mentioned above that they felt applied to their family. Certain adjectives were positive and others were negative. Homemakers who checked more positive than.negative items were said to have a nurturing family. Others were non-nurturing. The typical family had 1.7 male …

Farmland Consolidation And Fragmentation In Upper East Tennessee, William T. Coyle Dec 1976

Farmland Consolidation And Fragmentation In Upper East Tennessee, William T. Coyle

Masters Theses

Forty percent of farm operators in the 12-county Upper East Tennessee region have expanded their farmland base at one time or another. Consolidation of small farm units into larger ones has been an important adjustment strategy that the nation's farmers have used to maintain or improve their farm income. The gains from this strategy are not clear in Upper East Tennessee. In the region, those farmers who have expanded their land base own an average of 93 acres, more than twice the holdings of farmers who have not expanded. Nevertheless, 93 acres is substantially below the state average of more …

A Study Of The Seasonal Trend Of Several Nutrient Elements In Golden Delicious Apple Leaves In Tennessee Orchards To Determine The Ideal Time To Collect Leaf Samples For Foliar Analysis, Michael Blaine Donoho Dec 1976

A Study Of The Seasonal Trend Of Several Nutrient Elements In Golden Delicious Apple Leaves In Tennessee Orchards To Determine The Ideal Time To Collect Leaf Samples For Foliar Analysis, Michael Blaine Donoho

Masters Theses

Leaf samples from Golden Delicious apple trees were collected at nine dates throughout the growing season at four locations in Tennessee. The leaf samples were analyzed for precent N, P, K, Ca and Mg to determine the seasonal trends of these elements and to determine if a common period of relatively little nutrient change exists. N, P and K showed a general decrease in concentration throughout the season. Ca levels increased throughout the:growing season, but Mg showed irregular changes. A period of minimal change in mineral composition of leaves with the exception of Mg was July 30 through August 27 …

Comparative Site Index Of Sweetgum (Ḻi̲Q̲U̲I̲Ḏa̲Mḇa̲Ṟ S̲Ṯy̲Ṟa̲C̲I̲F̲Ḻu̲A̲ L.) And Southern Red Oak (Q̲U̲E̲Ṟc̲U̲S̲ F̲A̲Ḻc̲A̲Ṯa̲ Michx.) In West Tennessee, William Clayton Edwards

Masters Theses

Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) and southern red oak (Quercus falcata Michx.) occur naturally together over a continuum of sites in West Tennessee; sweetgum performing better on the best bottomland sites and southern red oak out performing sweetgum on the poorest upland sites such as the dry ridges. Previous research conducted at Ames Plantation, the study area, suggested that the midslope topographic position was about equally productive for both species. However, this conclusion was tentative and was made with incomplete data. Hence an on-the-ground study for verification purposes was necessary. A major objective of this study was to verify that the …

Evaluation Of Techniques Used In Estimating Phenotypic, Genetic And Environmental Trends In Beef Cattle, A. Hayden Brown Jr. Dec 1976

Evaluation Of Techniques Used In Estimating Phenotypic, Genetic And Environmental Trends In Beef Cattle, A. Hayden Brown Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

Data collected between 1957 and 1975 in the University of Tennessee, Ames Plantation Angus herd was used to compare two methods of adjusting weaning weight for known sources of fixed environmental variation and four methods of estimating phenotypic, genetic and environmental trends. The method of adjusting age-constant (calculated 205-day weight) weaning weights using the coefficient of regression of weaning age on calculated 205-day weight, reported by Robertson (1974), was superior to standard procedures for calculating 205-day weight and in removing the effects of sex and age at weaning. The use of sex of calf and age of dam adjustment factors …

Renovation As A Partial Solution To Housing Problems In Old Quito, Ecuador, Oswaldo Cesar MiñO Dec 1976

Renovation As A Partial Solution To Housing Problems In Old Quito, Ecuador, Oswaldo Cesar MiñO

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Quito has no distinct marginal belt, or barrio, section within the city. Rather, there are tugurios (or poor) living throughout the city, with higher concentrations in the historical city center of Quito. This historical center is rich in culture and history, as seen especially in its attractive colonial-style buildings. However, these buildings are being neglected at present and are losing their charm and historical value because they belong to the tugurio. The author feels it is important to preserve the historical relevance and charm of the old city center and at the same time provide adequate housing for those in …

The Effects Of The Norman Conquest On Anglo-Saxon Aristocracy, Cynthia L. Puryear Dec 1976

The Effects Of The Norman Conquest On Anglo-Saxon Aristocracy, Cynthia L. Puryear

Honors Theses

In 1066, William the Conqueror successfully invaded England. He established himself as king and began to implement his policies for complete control over the subjugated territory. The Norman invasion did not involve a large influx of people: but, rather a conquest by a man who acquired the country for himself and distributed the land to his followers. The old English aristocracy, mainly composed of the king's thegns, virtually disappeared with the conquest and was replaced by a new aristocracy.

The near disappearance of the English aristocrats and their replacement by Normans holding land in return for military service was an …

On The Dutch Expletive And Related Syntactic Problems, Kornelis J. Boot Dec 1976

On The Dutch Expletive And Related Syntactic Problems, Kornelis J. Boot

Theses and Dissertations

In his Über das niederländische Adverbialpronomen 'er' Bech argues that the subject expletive of Dutch is inserted when the NP subject has an indefinite article. Bech also claims that the subjective expletive is a local subject and not a logical subject.

This thesis proposes that the use of the subject expletive cannot be based upon a traditional structuralist concept. The author rejects some of Bech's claims and argues for a semantic distinction between definiteness and non-definiteness as a basis for expletive insertion. An attempt is also made to apply the same distinction in accounting for the use of het with …

The Effects Of A Physical Conditioning Program On Selected Measures Of Self Concept, Kirby Franz Weise Dec 1976

The Effects Of A Physical Conditioning Program On Selected Measures Of Self Concept, Kirby Franz Weise

Theses and Dissertations

Thirty-nine female college students participated in a class designed to increase their muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness. Changes were monitored on thirteen physical variables and eleven self concept variables. Nineteen females acted as a "control group," to test whether just the decision to change one's physical fitness affects self concept. They were measured on four self concept variables eight weeks prior to as well as at the beginning and end of their eight-week conditioning course.

During the sixteen week semester the experimental females, as a group, improved significantly on ten of the thirteen physical variables and nine of the eleven …

The abiotic factors of water temperature, dissolved oxygen, chlorides, nitrates, nitrites, sulphates, orthophosphates, pH and turbidity were determined for each sampling station using Standard Methods or Hach procedures. Of the fish examined …

The Supreme Court, Philosophy And Freedom Of Choice: An Analysis, Walter N. Blevins Dec 1976

The Supreme Court, Philosophy And Freedom Of Choice: An Analysis, Walter N. Blevins

Theses and Dissertations

It is a major contention of this thesis that to argue, debate and philosophize about choice and freedom of choice is one thing, but arguments as to the existence of free choice and claims to its exercise do not mean much, unless within the framework of social and political life the freedom is recognized and protected by some legal authority— in this case, the United States Supreme Court.

This thesis is directed at two areas of political research. First will be a survey and examination of current philosophic literature in order to specify and describe the various models employed in …

Organic soils under peat and tamarack were analyzed …

The Attribution Of Fault To Rape Victims: Subject Variables Affecting Blaming, Stephan Podrygula Dec 1976

The Attribution Of Fault To Rape Victims: Subject Variables Affecting Blaming, Stephan Podrygula

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the subject variables involved in the attribution of fault to rape victims. A consideration of attribution theory, in particular Heider's "naive analysis of action," suggests that innocent victims of misfortune will be blamed, however implausible this at first seems. Heider's theory has led to two specific theoretical explanations for blaming, E. Walster's defensiveness hypothesis and Lerner's just world hypothesis, both of which are examined in some detail. The relevant theoretical and experimental literature is reviewed, an assessment of the current standing of these explanations is made, and unresolved issues are raised. Several issues and questions based on …

Processing Pictorial Information: Effects Of Informativeness, Location, And Duration, Richard L. Metzger Dec 1976

Processing Pictorial Information: Effects Of Informativeness, Location, And Duration, Richard L. Metzger

Theses and Dissertations

When an observer views a picture, enough information processing occurs prior to the first eye movement to direct the eyes to an informative portion of the picture. This early processing is influenced by the overall coherency of the picture and the informativeness of the various sections of the picture. The present study tested the hypothesis that the processing of pictorial information proceeds in a hierarchical manner from the most informative sections of a picture to the least informative sections. The hypothesis was evaluated by observing changes in the recognition accuracy of high medium and low informative sections of a picture, …

Frontier In Transition: A Demographic History Of Benton Country, Minnesota, 1850-1870, Stephen J. Schilling Dec 1976

Frontier In Transition: A Demographic History Of Benton Country, Minnesota, 1850-1870, Stephen J. Schilling

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to examine closely the transformation of a frontier area into a settled community. The demographic history of Benton County, Minnesota, from 1850 to 1870, is examined in detail. The major emphasis is on the structure of the population and its changes over a twenty-year period. The central goal is to determine if there was a pattern to these chanoes. Generalizations applied to the entire frontier will then be compared to this one county to see if they are valid.

The manuscript census was the major source of information. The demographic information for each individual, …

States' Rights And Dualism: An Administrative Study Of Andrew Jackson's Indian Policy, John N. Olsgaard Dec 1976

States' Rights And Dualism: An Administrative Study Of Andrew Jackson's Indian Policy, John N. Olsgaard

Theses and Dissertations

This study attempts to provide the tools necessary for an accurate formulation of Andrew Jackson's administrative policies regarding the removal of the Five Civilized Tribes to the west of the Mississippi River. Such an undertaking integrates the biographical material available on Jackson with the narrative data compiled on the removal of the tribes, in a manner that will promote better understanding of the justifications, politics, and personal biases of the individuals involved.

This paper challenges the predominant view that Jackson was guided by an ideological affinity for states' rights philosophy in his presidential relations with the Indians. Jackson was not …

Also examined are the direction of government, the electoral process, and the newspaper coverage of the period.

The extant journals of the government are the primary sources for the proceedings of the sessions. Public opinion and awareness …

An Aspect Of The Process Of School Desegregation: The Effects Of Reading Ability Grouping On Social Attractiveness And Peer-Perceived Success, David A. Johnson Nov 1976

An Aspect Of The Process Of School Desegregation: The Effects Of Reading Ability Grouping On Social Attractiveness And Peer-Perceived Success, David A. Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

Research on the effects of school desegregation has failed to produce conclusive findings. An over emphasis on the outcomes of school desegregation, usually assessed through the use of standardized test scores, has created a situation in which there exists a paucity of studies of the day to day process of school desegregation: instructional practices, student interaction, and teacher behavior in the classroom. More research on the process of school desegregation is needed if its results or outcomes are to become more interpretable.

The Columbia River As A Barrier To Gene Flow In The Vagrant Shrew, Sorex Vagrans Vagrans Baird, James J. Kirk Nov 1976

The Columbia River As A Barrier To Gene Flow In The Vagrant Shrew, Sorex Vagrans Vagrans Baird, James J. Kirk

Dissertations and Theses

Twenty-one morphological characters were measured in shrews from four islands in the Columbia River and from the adjacent Oregon and Washington shores. Information on the history and characteristics of the river islands was gathered to facilitate interpretation of the shrew’s morphology data. Significant differences between character means of different populations were detected and average taxonomic distances between pairs of populations were calculated. The Columbia River is an incomplete barrier to gene flow, but its influence has been sufficient to allow divergence of island populations. Natural selection on the small gene pools of island populations has probably contributed to the divergence. …
