Rates Of Hillslope Lowering In The Badlands Of North Dakota, John R. Tinker Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Measurements in a small drainage basin in the Little Missouri Badlands of western North Dakota indicate an average rate of hillslope lowering by slopewash of 0.41 inch per year on the west-facing hillslopes underlain by the Sentinel Butte Formation, 0.14 inch per year on the southwest-facing hillslopes underlain by the Tongue River Formation, and 0.11 inch per year on the northeast-facing hillslopes underlain by the Tongue River Formation. Soil creep occurs mainly on the Tongue River Formation and is mostly restricted to the northeast-facing hillslopes where the average rate of soil creep parallel to the hillslope surface is 0.23 inch …

The Enterobacteriaceae: A Preliminary Study Of New Methods Of Identification: Rapid Biochemical Testing And Salt Tolerance, William F. Brooks Jr. Jan 1970

The Enterobacteriaceae: A Preliminary Study Of New Methods Of Identification: Rapid Biochemical Testing And Salt Tolerance, William F. Brooks Jr.

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Commercially available reagent-impregnated paper strip tests and tablet substrate tests were evaluated in comparison to the standard biochemical tests using representative members of the Enterobacteriaceae. For the most part, these tests were found to be unreliable or difficult to interpret. Standard media for key biochemical tests were then modified and a new inoculation procedure developed to allow for test results after four hours incubation. Representative members of the Enterobacteriaceae were tested using the modified standard media and, where a given test was critical for the differentiation of the organisms, the rapid test results were in complete agreement with the control …

Excitation Of Hydrogen Atoms By Fast Protons, Edward Ellis Fitchard Jan 1970

Excitation Of Hydrogen Atoms By Fast Protons, Edward Ellis Fitchard

Physics Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis a theoretical study is made of excitation of hydrogenic atom by charged particles such as protons or electrons. The approximation to the cross section for an inelastic scattering process is obtained under the following radically simplifying assumptions. The projectile is represented in its initial and final state by plane waves. All distortions are neglected whether they originate in an inelastic process or an elastic deflections of the charged particle by the nucleus. The perturbation of the atomic orbits between which the projectile induces transitions is neglected. Nonrelativistic hydrogenic wave functions are used for the electronic states. In …

Deflections Of A Ring Due To Normal Loads Using Energy Method And Stiffness Matrix Method, A.J. Rabinowitz Jan 1970

Deflections Of A Ring Due To Normal Loads Using Energy Method And Stiffness Matrix Method, A.J. Rabinowitz

Theses

Deflections and reactions of a ring of 1.855" mean diameter, fixed at one point, simply supported at another point and loaded normally at an arbitrary point were determined using the energy method and the stiffness matrix method. These results were verified experimentally and it was found that the values of displacements and reactions obtained by the two theoretical methods were within 4.5% and 0.5% respectively of experimental results. When effect of transverse shear was included in the computations done using the energy method it increased the values of deflections by less than 1.5% thus confirming that the effect of transverse …

Detection Of Developer By-Products Using The Schlieren Method, Stephen Kelly, Ralph Simon

Theses

A single-pass schlieren system, utilizing two 14 inch focal length lenses, has been developed for the purpose of demonstrating the feasibility of detecting and recording developer by-product flows from various photographic film/paper-developer combinations. The test samples studied were: Kodak Polycontrast F Paper in Kodak Developer, D-72 and Kodak Kodalith Contact Film in Kodak Developers D-11, Kodalith Super and Kodalith. The apparent amount of detectable flow varied greatly from test sample to test sample, but did not seem to show any significant shift in the pattern due to variations in the exposure conditions on the samples. Differences in the time of …

Wet Film Sensitometry With An Infrared Scanning Densitometer, Anthony Casinelli, John Hisler Jan 1970

Wet Film Sensitometry With An Infrared Scanning Densitometer, Anthony Casinelli, John Hisler

Theses

This project was to design and operate an infrared scanning densitometer to monitor the growth of the characteristic curve of a film during development. An aparatus was constructed which enabled us to pass repeatedly, a sensitometric strip through a beam of radiation during development. This radiation was focused on the film plane of the development container. The spot on the film plane was relayed, after transmission through the sample, to a photomultiplier tube. The response of the tube was displayed an oscilloscope and this was photographed. We were able to obtain a trace of the characteristic curve of a fully …

An Examination Of The Conclusion Proposed By W.A. Thornton On The "Luminosity And Color Rendering Capability Of White Light", Mary A. Maier

Theses

A study was recently conducted by W.A. Thornton of Westinghouse Flourescent and Vapor Divisions, on the luminosity and color rendering capability of white light. It is the purpose of this project to investigate the validity of his conclusions. Thornton states that: "The spectral power distribution of white light required to maximize luminous efficiency and the color rendering index is approximated by additive combination of three spectral lines near 450, 540 and 610nm The two wavelength regions near 500 and 580nm are disadvantageous."2

Four Objects: A Visual Hearing, Katharine Nuckols Gilbert Jan 1970

Four Objects: A Visual Hearing, Katharine Nuckols Gilbert

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis statement is of a two part nature. The first part shows photographs of my creative products in the process of making them and in their completed state. The second part deals with the process involved in my mental activity as these objects were created.

I have presented the photographs of my work first because I feel that viewing the work before reading the text is of primary importance. Visual comprehension of my work is my major purpose.

The photographs in the visual appendix are objects that exist within my world. They are abstractions. They are but a few …

The Application Of An Index To Determine Genetic And Environhental Contributions To Dentofacial Growth In Twins And Siblings, Richard Charles Hayes

Theses and Dissertations

The method of principal components may be used to reduce a large quantity of data for an individual into a single statistic, a growth index, indicative of overall facial growth, and to make a determination of the relative contribution of each variable, as well as the genotype and the environment, to the variation between individuals, When this method is applied to four consecutive years of cephalometric and anthropometric data from each of 95 children, consisting of Caucasian and Negro monozygotic twins, like-sexed dizygotic twins, and their siblings of both sexes, it discloses that:

1. The relative contributions of the variables …

The Dream Mine: A Study In Mormon Folklore, Joe Stanley Graham Jan 1970

The Dream Mine: A Study In Mormon Folklore, Joe Stanley Graham

Theses and Dissertations

In September of 1894, John Hyrum Koyle, Jr., said that he was shown in a dream or vision a large, rich deposit of gold and an underground storehouse of artifacts hidden by people of Ancient America. This dream was the beginning of a mining venture which has never produced anything of value, has been opposed vigorously by both officials of the LDS Church and the State, yet has claimed supporters numbered in the thousands.

The mine has profoundly affected (and continues to affect) the lives of many families who have come into the sphere of its influence. The lore of …

Orson Hyde And The Carson Valley Mission, 1855-1857, Albert R. Page

Theses and Dissertations

The Mormon Church has for years been given credit by historians for the settlement of Carson Valley. Prior to 1854 the LDS Church actually had no connection with that valley except that it was part of the Utah Territory, which the Church controlled. When political dissension against the Mormons developed in Carson Valley, Brigham Young decided to organize the area into a county in 1854. The following year he sent Orson Hyde and other officials there to organize the county government. Within a year Hyde so influenced Young that he agreed to send 250 colonists to Carson Valley in order …
