Investigating Catalysis Through Quantum Mechanical Computations: An Analysis Of Phosphoryl Transfer Enzymes And Ccc-Nhc Pincer Complexes, Katherine Nicholls Leigh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chemical reactions are essential to the world we experience. Certain chemical reactions, though beneficial, occur at rates too slow to be practical. Catalysis, or the use of another species to increase the rate of a chemical reaction, is often utilized, allowing chemical reactions to become more beneficial. Catalysts increase reaction rates by lowering the amount of energy required to perform a reaction. Catalysis is abundant, as evidenced in nature in the form of enzymes, or in a myriad of non-biological processes such as chemical manufacturing and pharmaceutical materials. Phosphoryl transfer is a fundamental step in numerous processes central to life, …

Formation, Maintenance, And Dissolution Of Employment Relationships, Jonathan Biggane Dec 2014

Formation, Maintenance, And Dissolution Of Employment Relationships, Jonathan Biggane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Much like scholarship on employment relationships, the goal of contemporary research on romantic relationships is to understand the forces that attract partners to one another and the underlying mechanisms that form long-term stable and satisfying unions. The three manuscripts herein integrate these seemingly disparate bodies of literature to address gaps in the turnover literature. First, I proffer positive illusions as a proximal antecedent of voluntary turnover and an answer as to why employees remain in bad employment relationships despite facing shocks, accumulated dissatisfaction, and quality alternatives. Second, I examine the content of exit conversations, identifying how employees approach exit (i.e., …

Cellulose Nanofibers Use In Coated Paper, Finley Richmond Dec 2014

Cellulose Nanofibers Use In Coated Paper, Finley Richmond

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cellulose Nanofibers (CNF) are materials that can be obtained by the mechanical breakdown of natural fibers. CNF have the potential to be produced at low cost in a paper mill and may provide novel properties to paper, paper coatings, paints, or other products. However, suspensions have a complex rheology even at low solid contents. To be able to coat, pump, or mix CNF at moderate solids, it is critical to understand the rheology of these suspensions and how they flow in process equipment; current papers only report the rheology up to 6% solids. Few publications are available that describe the …
