Longitudinal Prospective Relations Between Cannabis Use And Substance-Free Activities In A Diverse Community Sample Of Emerging Adult Heavy Drinkers, Andrew T. Voss Jul 2023

Longitudinal Prospective Relations Between Cannabis Use And Substance-Free Activities In A Diverse Community Sample Of Emerging Adult Heavy Drinkers, Andrew T. Voss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

National drinking and drug use trends suggest emerging adulthood (ages 18-25) is the developmental apex of harmful co-use of alcohol and drugs, with notable recent increases in cannabis use among emerging adults. Many emerging adults naturally begin to reduce harmful alcohol or drug use into their late 20s and 30s, however, a significant subgroup report a developmentally persistent pattern of frequent alcohol and cannabis use. There is evidence that limited access to alternative substance-free reinforcement (SFR) is a risk factor for chronic alcohol and drug misuse, there is a need for longitudinal research that examines changes in patterns of SFR …

Determinants And Predictors Of Smoking-Related Weight Concern In Smokers Participating In A Community-Based Cessation Program, Cheri Kilmurray Jul 2023

Determinants And Predictors Of Smoking-Related Weight Concern In Smokers Participating In A Community-Based Cessation Program, Cheri Kilmurray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Concern about weight gain is a barrier to smoking cessation, but determinants of post-cessation weight concern have not been adequately evaluated in the context of community-based cessation programs. Methods: Baseline data were analyzed from a cessation trial of 392 adults randomized to physical activity (PA) or general wellness counseling as adjunctive treatment for cigarette smoking. Outcomes were 1) Use of smoking to control weight (“control”) and 2) Willingness to tolerate weight gain without returning to smoking (“intolerance”) using validated instruments. Independent variables were self-reported PA and perceptions, socio-demographics, psycho-social measures, smoking behavior and perceptions, diet, and body mass index …

Salt In The Deep Marine, Rachel Bollinger May 2020

Salt In The Deep Marine, Rachel Bollinger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Rachel Allison Bollinger: Salt in the Deep Marine

(Under the direction of Dr. Christine Butterworth-McDermott and Dr. John McDermott)

The surface tension present between liquid and air is due to the fact that liquid molecules are highly attractive to one another. Because of this, the surface of water acts like an elastic membrane, allowing human hands or light insects to sit or slide on its surface. For a moment or two, the hand or the insect seems to occupy both the water and the air simultaneously. This commonplace phenomenon is explored in the poetry collection, Salt in the Deep …

Confrontation And The Reduction Of Anti-Arab Prejudice, Nadia Firdausya Apr 2016

Confrontation And The Reduction Of Anti-Arab Prejudice, Nadia Firdausya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the impact of confrontation on anti-Arab prejudice. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: a no-confrontation control condition, a low-threat confrontation condition, or a high-threat confrontation condition. Though evaluations of the partner in both the high-threat confrontation condition and the low-threat confrontation condition were more negative than in the no-confrontation control condition, implicit anti-Arab bias was only weaker than control in the low-threat confrontation condition. Implications are discussed with respect to theoretical work on implicit prejudice and reduction of anti-Arab bias.

Growing Up Biracial And Gay In The Deep South: Living Between The Color/Gender Lines, Theresa S. Hoogacker Jan 2008

Growing Up Biracial And Gay In The Deep South: Living Between The Color/Gender Lines, Theresa S. Hoogacker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a critical inquiry into the stories of three generations of women living in the South. Through the stories my mother, my daughter and I have lived through, I critically reflect on my experience of being a first generation doctoral student growing up in-between the color lines of Black and White and raising a biracial and gay daughter growing up in the deep South. Building on the works of Kincheloe and Pinar (1991), Frantz Fanon (1963), Maria Root (1996), Henry Giroux (1992), Paul Gilroy (1993b), Phillion, He & Connelly (2005), and He & Phillion (2008), I explore the ways …

Perceptions Of Special Education And General Education Teachers On Co-Teaching Of Students With Disabilities In Outheast Georgia School Systems, Deborah Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The researcher's purpose of this study was to understand perceptions of co-teaching by special education and general education teachers, and how those perceptions make the implementation of co-teaching for students with disabilities in the general education classroom successful. The study examined teacher perceptions on training for co-teaching, recommended practices for co-teaching, and supports needed for the co-teaching team. The researcher administered a Likert-scale survey, Perceptions of Co-Teaching Survey developed by Vance Austin (2001) to 45 special education and 98 general education teachers with co-teaching experience from three school districts in southeast Georgia. Teacher perceptions in three different areas were addressed: …

Georgia Superintendents' Assessment Of The Six Crucial C'S, Harvey A. Franklin Jan 2006

Georgia Superintendents' Assessment Of The Six Crucial C'S, Harvey A. Franklin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The quantitative research project examined the Georgia superintendents' assessment of their use of the six crucial C's in their job performance. The research method used for the study was a qualitative analysis of data collected from eight interviews of Georgia superintendents under contract during the 2005-2006 school year. Results of the study were used to address the three research questions: (1) extent to which the Georgia superintendents assess their use of the six crucial C's, (2) extent to which Georgia superintendents share the importance of the six crucial C's, and (3) extent to which Georgia superintendents rate their use of …
