Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Empathy, which involves understanding another person's experiences and concerns, is an important component for developing physicians' overall competence. This longitudinal study was designed to test the hypothesis that medical students' empathy can be enhanced and sustained by Humanitude Care Methodology, which focuses on perception, emotion and speech.
METHODS: This six-year longitudinal observational study examined 115 students who entered Okayama University Medical School in 2013. The study participants were exposed to two empathy-enhancing programs: (1) a communication skills training program (involving medical interviews) and (2) a Humanitude training program aimed at enhancing their empathy. They completed the Jefferson Scale of …
Enemy Soldiers And "Ball Mates": Intra-Imperial Football And Identity Politics In Interwar Northeast Asia, E. Taylor Atkins
Enemy Soldiers And "Ball Mates": Intra-Imperial Football And Identity Politics In Interwar Northeast Asia, E. Taylor Atkins
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
Nowhere in the colonial world was intra-imperial competition in association football (soccer) more common than that between imperial Japan and colonial Korea. Korean sides won an impressive 73% of their matches against Japanese between 1926 and 1942. If the Tokyo-based Japan Football Association (of which the Korea Football Association was a regional affiliate) was the organizational center of the sport within the empire, in terms of quality play the peninsula displaced it. This article argues that although football competition certainly reflected nationalist animosities, it also exemplified what imperial integration (naisen ittai) was supposed to look like. Football was one area …

Skbi Big 5 Survey 2021 February, Singapore Management University
Skbi Big 5 Survey 2021 February, Singapore Management University
Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics
The latest survey results suggest that the five largest economies collectively is projected to snapback to almost 6% in 2021, a modest upgrade from the August median, following an unprecedented preliminary contraction of roughly 4% last year (in real GDP terms). The 2022 median growth forecast of slightly above 4.5%, while slower, is still respectable, outstripping its pre-COVID 10-year average pace by more than half a percentage point. The aggregate upgrade in 2021, however, obscures the lopsided nature and highly uneven contour of the ongoing recovery. The bulk of the upward revision to growth was mainly due to IN (to …

Forgotten Forced Migrants Of War: Civilian Internment Of Japanese In British India, 1941-6, Christine De Matos, Rowena Ward
Forgotten Forced Migrants Of War: Civilian Internment Of Japanese In British India, 1941-6, Christine De Matos, Rowena Ward
Arts Papers and Journal Articles
The Second World War saw extraordinary movements of people, before, during and afterwards. Civilian internees are rarely considered part of this, and especially not those in South and Southeast Asia. Between December 1941 and May 1946, nearly 2700 Japanese civilians and colonial subjects from across Japan’s empire were interned in camps in British India. Mainly residents of Singapore and Malaya, these civilians were arrested and transferred by ship and train to India, where they were interned for all or part of the war. Their first ‘temporary’ camp was in Purana Qila, the Old Fort in New Delhi, from where some …

Wabi-Sabi As A Way Of Life In The Japanese Employment System: Multilateral Connections, Relativity, And Duality, Kanji Kitamura
Wabi-Sabi As A Way Of Life In The Japanese Employment System: Multilateral Connections, Relativity, And Duality, Kanji Kitamura
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Wabi-sabi is a Japanese concept traditionally described as a type of beauty that conveys the philosophical values of imperfection, incompleteness, and impermanence. Going beyond the traditional interpretation of the concept, this chapter attempts to discover wabi-sabi as a way of life in Japanese corporate settings. This chapter first revisits the concept of wabi-sabi and the system of lifetime employment, positioning them as intrinsically linked systems. To contextualize employment practice, it examines the tool of a job description and the system of job rotation as attributes of employment practice. The findings reveal the existence of wabi-sabi as a way of life …

Fundamental Shifts In Research, Ethics And Peer Review In The Era Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Edward Barroga, Janet B. Matanguihan
Biology Educator Scholarship
The era of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to fundamental shifts in research, ethics, and peer review including reframing of the research design, adapting methodologies to the study type, transitioning of research mechanics, changing research methodologies, overcoming data collection and standardization constraints, upholding research standards and ethics, maintaining informativeness and social value, and providing guarded peer review flexibility. Indeed, the COVID-19 crisis, despite disrupting research worldwide to an unprecedented degree, has also become a catalyst to develop strategies of adaptation to this disruption. As the COVID-19 pandemic continuous to evolve, new, cost-effective, and highly flexible research models …

Translingual Practices In A ‘Monolingual’ Society: Discourses, Learners’ Subjectivities And Language Choices, Reiko Kato, Yuri Kumagai
East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications
This study explores how Japanese EFL students engaged in translingual practices during a telecollaborative project that connected two college classrooms in the US and Japan. The project aimed at encouraging the students’ creative uses of languages, promoting an appreciation for their multiple linguistic resources, and nurturing their sense of ownership of languages informed by translingual practices. Contrary to our expectations, students in Japan exhibited great efforts to write in monolingual English and/or Japanese, which prompted us to investigate the reasons behind their language choices. Based on data analyses drawing on poststructural theory of subjectivities, we argue that the students’ language …
