From Primary Resources To A Foundation For Programming: Disability History At Uta Libraries, Ramona Holmes, Kelly Visnak

Librarian & UTA Libraries Staff Publications

In 2013, the Special Collections Department of the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) Libraries was asked to collect disability history materials. Review of the current collection revealed many materials relating to disabilities. There is even speculation that one of UTA's maps, the 1493 Secunda etas mundi map, uses disability imagery to depict peoples at the edge of the known world. This was a digital project ripe for exposure and it became the foundation for a program that explored the experience of people with disabilities. From this initial collaboration, two grants were awarded: one from the Texas State Library and …

The Winds Of Changes Shift: An Analyis Of Recent Growth In Bargaining Units And Representation Efforts In Higher Education, William A. Herbert

Publications and Research

This article analyzes data accumulated during the first three quarters of 2016 regarding completed and pending questions of representation involving faculty and student employees in higher education. It is part of a larger and continuing National Center research project that tracks faculty and graduate student employee unionization growth and representation efforts at private and public institutions of higher learning since January 1, 2013. The data presented in this article demonstrates that the rate of newly certified units at private colleges and universities since January 1, 2016 far outpaces new units in the public sector. There has been a 25.9% increase …

Effectiveness Of Interventions For Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder In Physical Therapy Contexts: A Systematic Literature Review And Meta-Analysis, Nkechi Offor, Peace Ossom Williamson, Priscila Cacola

Librarian & UTA Libraries Staff Publications

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic literature review and meta-analysis is to identify the types of interventions in physical therapy contexts that have been explored in children with developmental coordination disorder, the most common variables being addressed, and whether these interventions are effective. Method: This systematic search of MEDLINE, PEDro, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library identified interventions in physical therapy contexts for children and adolescents with DCD, and studies were screened using these criteria and assessed using the PEDro and NIH quality assessment scales. AMSTAR was used to evaluate systematic reviews and a meta-analysis was conducted. Results: From the …

Implementing A Scholarly Impact Outreach Program For Faculty And Graduate Students, Brenna Helmstutler Oct 2016

Implementing A Scholarly Impact Outreach Program For Faculty And Graduate Students, Brenna Helmstutler

University Library Faculty Presentations

There are two intersecting realities in research and academia today:

  • There are greater expectations for individual faculty and academic departments to substantively demonstrate evidence of research productivity and impact for such applications as promotion and tenure, annual reporting, and benchmarking. Graduate students require knowledge of top articles and researchers in their discipline and those pursuing a career as faculty need to know how to determine their impact towards promotion and tenure.
  • Database vendors and other content providers are regularly developing and offering robust, yet user-friendly, bibliometric and altmetric tools within current as well as new products. Many of the tools …

Social Participation And Life Satisfaction Among Widowed Older Adults In China, Yawen Li, Ling Xu, Joohong Min, Iris Chi, Bin Xie

Social Work Faculty Publications & Presentations

Aim: Little is known about how widowed older adults in China adjust during widowhood. This paper examines the relationship between their changes in social participation following spousal loss and their reported life satisfaction. Methods: Using two-wave (2000 and 2006) national representative data from China, we regressed measures of widowhood status, changes of social participation, health function, financial strain as well as living arrangement on life satisfaction after adjusting for baseline life satisfaction and other sociodemographic variables. Results: Increased social participation was related to higher levels of life satisfaction. This study did not find evidence that individuals who experienced widowhood would …

Faculty Scholarly Works

Career services professionals can utilize faculty as an additional resource when working to coach law students and alumni to successful careers. Working across departmental “silos” can help improve student career outcomes and engagement by tapping into additional professional contact networks. Developing relationships with tenure-track, contract and adjunct faculty, inviting them to programming, asking them to participate on committees and keeping faculty apprised of student employment, allow for a holistic and collaborate approach to advising students.

Heat Transfer In Unsaturated Soil With Application To Borehole Thermal Energy Storage, Ali Moradi, Kathleen M. Smits, Ning Lu, John S. Mccartney

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

In this study, we numerically and experimentally evaluated heat transfer in soils under unsaturated conditions in the context of simulating a laboratory-scale, three-dimensional soil-borehole thermal energy storage (SBTES) system. Most previous studies assumed that soil thermal and hydraulic properties are constant and that heat transfer in soil occurs only in the form of conduction, neglecting convective and latent heat transfer. In addition, there is a lack of data from controlled experiments to validate multiphase numerical models that can be used to better study SBTES systems installed in the vadose zone. The goal of this study was to evaluate the significance …

Perceptions Of Active Learning Between Faculty And Undergraduates: Differing Views Among Departments, Lorelei E. Patrick, Leigh Ann Howell, William Wischusen

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

There have been numerous calls recently to increase the use of active learning in university science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) classrooms to more actively engage students and enhance student learning. However, few studies have investigated faculty and student perceptions regarding the effectiveness of active learning or the barriers to its implementation. Previous work surveying a single class in a single department has suggested that faculty and students have different perceptions of the effectiveness of active learning strategies and the barriers faculty face when implementing these teaching strategies. We expand on these previous findings by surveying a larger and more …
