Facilitator Ethnicity And Clinical Judgement Among Senior Minority Students Using Unfolding Case Studies, Rachael King

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Unfolding case studies are a technique used in advancing critical thinking in order for nursing students to enhance their clinical judgement. The format at which they are delivered can influence the degree of learning, understanding, applying, analyzing, and evaluating for students, especially senior minority nursing students. This quasi-experimental posttest survey between-groups study involved implementing unfolding case studies with a randomly selected minority or non-minority facilitator video recording for senior minority nursing students. After completing the case study, all participants were given a posttest survey, the Clinical Decision Making in Nursing Scale (Jenkins, 1983). The survey evaluates students’ self-perceived clinical judgement. …

Sea level rise is causing archeological sites in Florida to get wet. It’s unknown how the artifacts will be affected by getting wet. This study investigates how one type of artifact (gar scales) is affected physically and chemically by wetting. This study tested the hypothesis that pristine gar scales retain less water compared to degraded scales. The independent variable was scale condition (pristine vs. degraded). The dependent variable was water weight retention. 32 pristine and 32 degraded gar scales were collected from an archaeological site and weighed prior to soaking in water for 4 days. After soaking all the gar …

Fruits And Vegetables: Catalase Inhibitors, Victoria Hendricks, Cassandra S. Korte, Erika L. Doctor

Student Publications, Presentations, and Projects

Flavonoids are a class of chemicals that are found in plants, meaning they are commonly consumed within people’s diets. Flavonoids also act as inhibitors within the body. Inhibitors slow down or stop chemical reactions from taking place. In this case, the flavonoids react with the enzyme catalase to inhibit its activity. Catalase in the body is typically associated with the presence of an infection or inflammation. This leads to increased levels of hydrogen peroxide in the body, which reacts with the catalase. This study examines the flavonoids present in cherries and spinach to determine their effect on catalase activity. Flavonoids …

Calcium Ions Effect On Planaria Feeding Behavior, Jonathan Newman, Natalie Gonzalez, Erika L. Doctor, Cassandra S. Korte

Student Publications, Presentations, and Projects

Calcium is a well-known nutrient required for animal body function, playing a role in muscle contraction, movement, and neurological messaging. Laboratories use planaria, invertebrate flatworms, as a common model to study motility. These invertebrates have the ability to absorb nutrients such as calcium through their skin which aid in their metabolic processes. We hypothesize that how we house model organisms can affect the quality and outcome of our experiments. In other laboratories planaria are grown in different types of water. Which led us to ask how do different waters effect planaria motility and feeding behaviors for specific species? To test …

Enhancing Plant Growth In Adverse Environmental Conditions, Khelia Gihozo, Wayne Law

Student Publications, Presentations, and Projects

As climate change intensifies, harsh environmental conditions, such as increased drought and salt levels, will cause significant challenges to agricultural productivity globally. Plants are naturally sensitive to stress but have evolved mechanisms that play a crucial role in regulating plant responses to environmental stress. However, the adaptations occurring may not be quick enough to ensure the long-term survivability or production of our agricultural system. Abscisic acid (ABA) is a hormone that allows plants to tolerate dry and salty conditions by causing stomatal closure and triggering a temporary dormancy. While naturally produced by plants, supplementation could enhance a plant’s resistance to …

Does Heat Influence Planaria Flatworm Location?, Logan-Marie Torry, Cassandra S. Korte

Student Publications, Presentations, and Projects

Planaria flatworms swim away from both light and heat. They show the strongest photophobic responses to ultraviolet (UV) light and clear thermotaxic responses to temperatures above 30°C. This experiment seeks to test whether planaria can be conditioned to swim towards light when exposed to heat as a negative stimulus. Previous research suggests that planaria can learn through conditioning when exposed to different types of sweeteners in both dark and light environments. We predict that if planaria think that dark environments will be warmer, then they would choose to swim towards the light when given the choice between the two environments. …

Emotional Eating, Self-Esteem, And Resilience In Young Adults, Gabriela Barber, Sophia Fiz, Sean Blumenfeld, Daniel Ceccoli, Patrick J. Cooper

Student Publications, Presentations, and Projects

Research suggests that unhealthy eating behaviors occur for various reasons, most notably by perceiving external cues of food, but also from excessive stress. Research also suggests that people cope by either overeating or undereating in response to stress. There are two possible contributing factors to the presence of emotional undereating and emotional overeating: resilience to stress and self-esteem. The purpose of this study was to examine whether self-esteem and resilience limit emotional undereating (EUE) or emotional over-eating (EOE). Here [GU1] we show that resilience has more of an impact on both EOE and EUE than self-esteem. In a sample of …

Mindset Orientation And Coping Behaviors In Adults, Indyah Ferrouillet, Patrick J. Cooper

Student Publications, Presentations, and Projects

Mindset orientation refers to the beliefs that underlie the causes of one’s abilities and skills. Carol Dweck (2006) suggests that some individuals exhibit a fixed mindset, believing their abilities are innate and immutable, while others exhibit a growth mindset, believing their abilities can be learned, trained, and developed through practice. Growth mindset is correlated with motivation, resilience, and academic success (Dweck, 2006; Yeager & Dweck, 2012; Blackwell et al., 2007). It is also linked to more positive coping strategies and fewer negative coping strategies (Janssen & van Atteveldt, 2023; Henshaw et al., 2023). Furthermore, possessing a growth mindset may improve …
