Visions Of The Amistad: American Public Engagement With The Amistad Story, Samuel Perkins Dec 2014

Visions Of The Amistad: American Public Engagement With The Amistad Story, Samuel Perkins

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Steven Spielberg’s movie Amistad, released in 1997, is considered to be a good movie. The New York Times published a very favorable review of the film when it came out stating that it provides “tough, sobering depictions of the captives’ ordeal.” It has all of the ingredients of a great historical motion picture; it is interesting, exciting at times, and educational. Amistad is a go to film for many high school history teachers to begin discussion on the Amistad case. While the movie follows the movements of high profile characters from the Amistad story such as Martin Van Buren, Cinque, …

On Demand Cell Sectoring Based Fractional Frequency Reuse In Wireless Networks, Shakil Ahmed, Mohammad Arif Hossain, Mostafa Zaman Chowdhury Dec 2014

On Demand Cell Sectoring Based Fractional Frequency Reuse In Wireless Networks, Shakil Ahmed, Mohammad Arif Hossain, Mostafa Zaman Chowdhury

Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Research

In this paper, a dynamic channel assigning along with dynamic cell sectoring model has been proposed that focuses on the Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR) not only for interference mitigation but also for enhancement of overall system capacity in wireless networks. We partition the cells in a cluster into two part named centre user part (CUP) and edge user part (EUP). Instead of huge traffic, there may be unoccupied channels in the EUPs of the cells. These unoccupied channels of the EUPs can assist the excessive number of users if these channels are assigned with proper interference management. If the number …

Why Did The Bear Cross The Road? Comparing The Performance Of Multiple Resistance Surfaces And Connectivity Modeling Methods, Samuel A. Cushman, Jesse S. Lewis, Erin Landguth Dec 2014

Why Did The Bear Cross The Road? Comparing The Performance Of Multiple Resistance Surfaces And Connectivity Modeling Methods, Samuel A. Cushman, Jesse S. Lewis, Erin Landguth

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

There have been few assessments of the performance of alternative resistance surfaces, and little is known about how connectivity modeling approaches differ in their ability to predict organism movements. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of four connectivity modeling approaches applied to two resistance surfaces in predicting the locations of highway crossings by American black bears in the northern Rocky Mountains, USA. We found that a resistance surface derived directly from movement data greatly outperformed a resistance surface produced from analysis of genetic differentiation, despite their heuristic similarities. Our analysis also suggested differences in the performance of different connectivity …

Impact Of Hub Location On The Performance Of Wireless Body Area Networks For Fitness Applications, Vit Sipal, Domenico Gaetano, Patrick Mcevoy, Max Ammann Dec 2014

Impact Of Hub Location On The Performance Of Wireless Body Area Networks For Fitness Applications, Vit Sipal, Domenico Gaetano, Patrick Mcevoy, Max Ammann

Articles

This letter compares the propagation properties of Wireless Body Area Networks for three different locations (head, foot and waist) of the hub/internet gateway on the human body. The wireless channels between the hubs and four nodes (chest, back, and upper arms) are measured on a female and a male subject performing push-ups and squats. A framework using spider plots is used for cumulative performance description. The results show that the best overall performance is for hub located on the left temple and the worst overall performance is achieved for a hub on the waist. These results are expected to stimulate …

Elliptic Curve Cryptography, Kerrie Pratt Dec 2014

Elliptic Curve Cryptography, Kerrie Pratt

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In the present day, security is essential for sending and receiving information. There are always stories about bank accounts being hacked, credit card numbers being stolen, and secret information being decoded. With the technology of the Internet age growing at a rapid pace, security is essential to keep privileged information safe. In order to ensure this information is kept private, so that information can be sent and received without being hacked and decoded, organizations employ different types of encryption. One of the current encoding systems is Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC). ECC uses elliptic curves over finite fields to send information …

Parametric Enhancement Of Flavor Oscillation In A Three-Neutrino Framework, David C. Latimer, Kara M. Merfeld Dec 2014

Parametric Enhancement Of Flavor Oscillation In A Three-Neutrino Framework, David C. Latimer, Kara M. Merfeld

All Faculty Scholarship

When neutrinos travel through matter with a periodic density profile, the neutrino oscillation probability can be enhanced if certain conditions are satisfied. In a two-neutrino framework, the condition for parametric resonance is known. Herein, we consider the analogous parametric resonance condition within the context of a full three-neutrino framework with two oscillation scales. For energies in the range of hundreds of MeV to a few GeV, we find that neutrino oscillation can be parametrically enhanced if two approximate relations are satisfied. The first is similar to the two-neutrino parametric resonance condition while the second involves the other oscillation scale. Treating …

Music Therapy And Communication Disabilities: Singing, Speech, And The Brain, Jennifer Drake

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Music therapy interventions, especially singing, can aid those with communication disorders to attain and develop verbal and non-verbal communication and language skills, as well as functional social skills. Throughout my own interactions with those with communication impairments, I have witnessed many individuals who struggle with typical speech, but are better able to communicate when music is involved. For instance, a young boy with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) who does not typically speak independently or when prompted is able to sing every word to familiar songs on the radio that he enjoys. Such evidence of the positive effect that music can …

Deriving The Dyer-Roeder Equation From The Geodesic Deviation Equation Via The Newman Penrose Null Tetrad, Aly Aly Dec 2014

Deriving The Dyer-Roeder Equation From The Geodesic Deviation Equation Via The Newman Penrose Null Tetrad, Aly Aly

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In this paper we examine the geodesic deviation equation using the Newman-Penrose (N-P) formalism for a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric (Carroll, S. (2004); Ryden, B. (2003); Newman & Penrose (1962)). We solved the geodesic deviation equation for angular diameter distance, using the relevant N-P components, and the resulting expression was the Dyer-Roeder equation of cosmology (Ryden, B. (2003)) (Schneider et al. (1992)). This leads us to believe that we can apply the N-P formalism to a perturbed FLRW metric and find a solvable equation for angular diameter distance (Kling & Campbell (2008)). The perturbed FLRW metric incorporates clumps of matter …

Auschwitz concentration camp was the largest camp established by the Nazis. The camp was in fact three main camps with different functions but with one main purpose: to force the prisoners to work. This well-known camp’s construction started in May of 1940 in Poland, which was annexed in 1939. Auschwitz would eventually be separated into three separate camps, Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II ( Auschwitz- Birkenua) and lastly Auschwitz III (Auschwitz- Monowitz).1

American women contributed to the Great War in many ways. Women were nurses, volunteers, clerks; each of these jobs was helping women gain agency in their work and also helping their cry for suffrage. Some of American women’s greatest contributions were on the frontline of the war in Europe. The women who were on the frontline of the war were specifically nurses and more specifically they asked to be put on the frontlines of the war. The American Red Cross organization was the best organization that gave women opportunities to volunteer to serve the United States, but the United States …

The Turkish Revolution exemplifies the rise of the nation-state and signified the complete destruction of the old order in the Middle East. The currents of thought and the political developments that rose to prominence in Turkey’s formation have had long-lasting implications. The entire once-Ottoman world has had to come to grips with nationalistic movements, democratization, and the relation between faith and state. The Young Turk movement provided a demonstration of what modern nationalism could accomplish, both in positive terms of inclusion and modernization and also in terms of ethnic and religious exclusion.

Women changed the course of history after World War II. Before World War II, women had briefly helped their country during the Great War but had returned home following the war. After the stock market crash in 1929, many people struggled to provide for their families which led women to take jobs again. When American joined World War II after Pearl Harbor, the large influx of men joining the army led companies in a lurch for employees. American propaganda strongly encouraged women to do their patriotic duty and to leave the household, only temporarily, to help their country. Women in …

In the wake of the rise of Hitler’s National Socialist state a church struggle took over Germany. The “German Christians,” placed by Hitler, under the leadership of Ludwig Muller, fought to blend Christianity with nationalism and political oppression. Muller and the German Christians followed an ideology of Aryan superiority and taught that the Jewish people were sub- human. During the confusion throughout the Protestant church, theologians, pastors, and professors rose up based on their own theology to combat the German Christians. This movement was called the “Confessing Church” and at its peak consisted of about 3000 members. Though the German …

“When the classic work on the history of women comes to be written, the biggest force for change in their lives will turn out to have been war. Curiously, war produces more dislocations in the lives of women who stay at home than of men who go off to fight”1. The Second World War was a total war. It had a total effect on manpower, industry, resources, and, even the lives of civilians. The United States did not fight on its own turf but the people, men and women alike, were affected by the wartime. Sixty percent of the men …

World War One was a major turning point in the history of the world. War advancements had created a monster that no one was ready for. No longer was war seen as glorious, but instead horrifying. Often, the world sees the war from an outside perspective understanding that it was a great tragedy, but they do not understand it from a personal level. Many historians have tried to accomplish this through interviews with the survivors, writing biographies, excavating battle grounds, and various other methods. One method, which is often times overlooked, is viewing the war through the lens of the …
