Dartmouth Scholarship

Chk1 inhibitors have emerged as promising anticancer therapeutic agents particularly when combined with antimetabolites such as gemcitabine, cytarabine or hydroxyurea. Here, we address the importance of appropriate drug scheduling when gemcitabine is combined with the Chk1 inhibitor MK-8776, and the mechanisms involved in the schedule dependence.

Family Diversity And Inequality: The Canadian Case, Beaujot Roderic, Jianye Liu, Zenaida R. Ravanera Dec 2013

Family Diversity And Inequality: The Canadian Case, Beaujot Roderic, Jianye Liu, Zenaida R. Ravanera

Population Change and Lifecourse Strategic Knowledge Cluster Discussion Paper Series/ Un Réseau stratégique de connaissances Changements de population et parcours de vie Document de travail

The Second Demographic Transition, including flexibility in types of unions and in entry and exit from unions, has increased the diversity across families. There has been a significant cultural and political dynamic to celebrate this diversity as an increase in individual options, beyond the heterosexual couples with children in a traditional division of labour.

Diversity can be expressed in various ways: economic families or unattached individuals, married or common law, two parents or lone parent, opposite sex or same sex, breadwinner or two earners, traditional division of work and care or collaborative model, couples with and without children, intact or …

Distance-Based Consensus Models For Fuzzy And Multiplicative 3 Preference Relations, Yejun Xu, Kevin Li, Huimin Wang Dec 2013

Distance-Based Consensus Models For Fuzzy And Multiplicative 3 Preference Relations, Yejun Xu, Kevin Li, Huimin Wang

Odette School of Business Publications

This paper proposes a distance-based consensus model for fuzzy preference relations where the weights of fuzzy preference relations are automatically determined. Two indices, an individual to group consensus index (ICI) and a group consensus index (GCI), are introduced. An iterative consensus reaching algorithm is presented and the process terminates until both the ICI and GCI are controlled within predefined thresholds. The model and algorithm are then extended to handle multiplicative preference relations. Finally, two examples are illustrated and comparative analyses demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Native Footprints: Photographs And Stories Written On The Land, Kathleen J. Martin Dec 2013

Native Footprints: Photographs And Stories Written On The Land, Kathleen J. Martin

Ethnic Studies

This essay examines the work of Native photographers and artists and the ways their work addresses the decolonizing practice of the study of visual images, as well as stimulating anomalous and unexpected interpretations. It situates representations from a starting point of power, oppression and hegemony as central components of visual imagery, and also as an opportunity to promote dialogue and encourage new interpretations and narratives. This manner of investigation may function as a way to stimulate what wa Thiong’o has conceptualized as “decolonizing the mind” as it applies to images, and to re-imagine Native life as integral and continuous on …

Better Primer Design For Metagenomics Applications By Increasing Taxonomic Distinguishability, Melita Jaric, Jonathan Segal, Eugenia Silva-Herzog, Lisa Schneper, Kalai Mathee, Giri Narasimhan

HWCOM Faculty Publications

Current methods of understanding microbiome composition and structure rely on accurately estimating the number of distinct species and their relative abundance. Most of these methods require an efficient PCR whose forward and reverse primers bind well to the same, large number of identifiable species, and produce amplicons that are unique. It is therefore not surprising that currently used universal primers designed many years ago are not as efficient and fail to bind to recently cataloged species. We propose an automated general method of designing PCR primer pairs that abide by primer design rules and uses current sequence database as input. …

The Effects Of Acute Post Exercise Consumption Of Two Cocoa-Based Beverages With Varying Flavanol Content On Indices Of Muscle Recovery Following Downhill Treadmill Running, Katelyn Peschek, Robert Pritchett, Ethan Bergman, Kelly Pritchett Dec 2013

The Effects Of Acute Post Exercise Consumption Of Two Cocoa-Based Beverages With Varying Flavanol Content On Indices Of Muscle Recovery Following Downhill Treadmill Running, Katelyn Peschek, Robert Pritchett, Ethan Bergman, Kelly Pritchett

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Dietary flavanols have been associated with reduced oxidative stress, however their efficacy in promoting recovery after exercise induced muscle damage is unclear. This study examined the effectiveness of acute consumption of cocoa-flavanols on indices of muscle recovery including: subsequent exercise performance, creatine kinase, muscle tenderness, force, and self-perceived muscle soreness. Eight endurance-trained athletes (VO2max 64.4 ± 7.6 mL/kg/min) completed a downhill running protocol to induce muscle soreness, and 48-h later completed a 5-K (kilometer) time trial. Muscle recovery measurements were taken at PRE, 24 h-POST, 48 h-POST, and POST-5K. Participants consumed 1.0 g of carbohydrate per kilogram of body weight …

We analyze the planetary microlensing event MOA-2010-BLG-328. The best fit yields host and planetary masses of Mh = 0.11 ± 0.01 M Ȯ and Mp = 9.2 ± 2.2 M ⊕, corresponding to a very late M dwarf and sub-Neptune-mass planet, respectively. The system lies at D L = 0.81 ± 0.10 kpc with projected separation r ⊥ = 0.92 ± 0.16 AU. Because of the host's a priori unlikely close distance, as well as the unusual nature of the system, we consider the possibility that the microlens parallax signal, which determines the host mass and distance, is actually due …

Effects Of Reproductive Condition, Roost Microclimate, And Weather Patterns On Summer Torpor Use By A Vespertilionid Bat, Joseph S. Johnson, Michael J. Lacki Dec 2013

Effects Of Reproductive Condition, Roost Microclimate, And Weather Patterns On Summer Torpor Use By A Vespertilionid Bat, Joseph S. Johnson, Michael J. Lacki

Forestry and Natural Resources Faculty Publications

A growing number of mammal species are recognized as heterothermic, capable of maintaining a high-core body temperature or entering a state of metabolic suppression known as torpor. Small mammals can achieve large energetic savings when torpid, but they are also subject to ecological costs. Studying torpor use in an ecological and physiological context can help elucidate relative costs and benefits of torpor to different groups within a population. We measured skin temperatures of 46 adult Rafinesque's big-eared bats (Corynorhinus rafinesquii) to evaluate thermoregulatory strategies of a heterothermic small mammal during the reproductive season. We compared daily average and minimum skin …

Transvaginal Ultrasonography In Ovarian Cancer Screening: Current Perspectives, John R. Van Nagell Jr., John T. Hoff Dec 2013

Transvaginal Ultrasonography In Ovarian Cancer Screening: Current Perspectives, John R. Van Nagell Jr., John T. Hoff

Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Publications

Transvaginal ultrasonography (TVS) is an integral part of all major ovarian cancer screening trials. TVS is accurate in detecting abnormalities in ovarian volume and morphology, but is less reliable in differentiating benign from malignant ovarian tumors. When used as the only screening test, TVS is sensitive, but has a low positive predictive value. Therefore, serum biomarkers and tumor morphology indexing are used together with TVS to identify ovarian tumors at high risk for malignancy. This allows preoperative triage of high-risk cases to major cancer centers for therapy while decreasing unnecessary surgery for benign disease. Ovarian cancer screening has been associated …
