Where Did (S)He Get Those Skills? An Investigation Of Acrl’S Proficiencies For Instruction Librarians, Theresa Westbrock, Sarah Fabian
Where Did (S)He Get Those Skills? An Investigation Of Acrl’S Proficiencies For Instruction Librarians, Theresa Westbrock, Sarah Fabian
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009
How and where are instruction librarians being trained as teachers? In 2007, ACRL approved a revised set of proficiencies for instruction librarians. Using these new proficiencies, we have repeated a 1993 study (Shonrock and Mulder) that investigated if and when librarians were learning teaching-related skills. Using these data, we will determine whether library schools have made adjustments to their programs based on the recommendations put forth by the earlier study. We will also focus on specific skills instruction librarians predominantly report learning on the job, in order to identify where leaders of in-house professional development programs might target their efforts.
"What Is The Value Of Youth Work?" Symposium Booklet, Laurie Ross
"What Is The Value Of Youth Work?" Symposium Booklet, Laurie Ross
Local Knowledge: Worcester Area Community-Based Research
As a group of experienced and novice youth workers, we believe that youth work is fundamentally about building trust-filled, mutually respectful relationships with young people. We create safe environments for young people to connect with other supportive adults and peers and to avoid violence in their neighborhoods and their homes. We guide those harmed by oppressive community conditions such as racism, sexism, agism, homophobia, and classism through a process of healing. As we get to know more about young people’s interests, we help them develop knowledge and skills in a variety of areas including: academic, athletic, leadership/civic, the arts, health …
Contentious Conversations, Leah A. Zuidema
Contentious Conversations, Leah A. Zuidema
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
The idea of joining a conversation through reading and writing is not new; in his 1941 book "The Philosophy of Literary Form: Studies in Symbolic Action," Kenneth Burke suggests that the acts of reading and writing are like entering a parlor where others are already conversing. The author explores the place of professional debate within NCTE and in the pages of "English Journal". Regardless, by reading these pages, one is entering into a conversation that is already underway.

Scaling Up “Evidence-Based” Practices For Teachers Is A Profitable But Discredited Paradigm, Gary L. Anderson, Kathryn Herr
Scaling Up “Evidence-Based” Practices For Teachers Is A Profitable But Discredited Paradigm, Gary L. Anderson, Kathryn Herr
Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works
This article takes issue with the notion that professional learning communities need to be more focused on teacher expertise through the use of online videos of lessons taught by expert teachers that are aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The authors argue that the use of externally developed, research-based, and standards-aligned videos violates the principles of authentic inquiry that underlie professional learning communities. They also caution that a profit-seeking education industry is increasingly behind the promotion of evidence-based products.

The Relationship Between Professional Development And Teacher Change In The Implementation Of Instructional Strategies That Support Elementary Students' Science Textbook Reading, Virginia J. Laughridge
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study examined the relationship between a series of professional development workshops and change in three rural elementary teachers’ science textbook reading instructional strategies. The analysis of the qualitative data indicates the degree of teacher change was related to several inner-related factors: (a) teaching experience, (b) teacher perceptions of self, (c) mode of content delivery, and (d) teacher beliefs. Two teachers with the greatest longevity of teaching experience had previously established instructional strategies and modes of content delivery which did not emphasize student textbook reading skills. Their modes of content delivery were related to their self- perceptions as “science teachers” …
Exploring The Five Phases Of Physical Therapist Professional Development Advanced By The Clinical Doctorate Degree, Salome V. Brooks
Exploring The Five Phases Of Physical Therapist Professional Development Advanced By The Clinical Doctorate Degree, Salome V. Brooks
All PTHMS Faculty Publications
The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) 2020 strategic plan mandated that the clinical doctor of physical therapy degree (DPT) will be the minimum practice standard. The APTA failed to articulate a functional practice description recognizing the varying levels of preparation. The current literature validates the existence of a stepwise pattern of professional development in similarly evolving disciplines. Applied nursing research by Benner (Benner model of professional development, 2001) identified five stages of professional development and characteristics that were useful in the discipline's advancement. The purpose of the study was to apply the structure of the Benner Model to physical therapy …

Readers Matter: The Development Of An Individualized Professional Development Model, Daniel Jacob Super
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
An alarming trend of student non-compliance with reading assignments in secondary and post-secondary environments is causing concern in many areas, including college readiness. Public school teachers and university faculty alike are responsible for the literacy levels of graduating students; however, many educators are not implementing the adequate literacy supports within their content area courses. This project used current research on best practice in literacy instruction, as well as the Characteristics of Highly Effective Teaching and Learning to create the Readers Matter™ evaluative process in which faculty members self-select to be assessed regarding the current levels of student literacy support. After …

This case study reveals new dimensions of transformative learning occurring through informal learning opportunities. The research results demonstrate that the individual’s learning spans understanding, networking, professional identity development, and transformative learning. Specifically, virtual online communities facilitated through social media provide professional networks and social relationships beyond the scope of the individual’s usual interactions and experience. Discussion and recommendations include using social media and virtual communities as instructional strategies for graduate studies and continued learning beyond formal education. The educational significance includes facilitating transformative learning in informal learning contexts, and using social media and online communities for professional learning.
Student, Practitioner, Or Both?:Separation And Integration Of Identities In Professional Social Care Education, Fiona Mcsweeney
Student, Practitioner, Or Both?:Separation And Integration Of Identities In Professional Social Care Education, Fiona Mcsweeney
Articles
This paper presents and discusses some of the findings from a qualitative study of identities in work-related learners. The theoretical framework of structural symbolic interactionism is outlined and the two identities of interest, that of student and practitioner discussed. The aim of professional education is viewed as enabling the practitioner to deal with ambiguity and change through critical examination of work practices and location of these within theoretical frameworks. It is argued that for knowledge and behaviour to transfer to the work setting the student and worker identities need to be integrated rather than kept separate. Factors identified as influencing …

Problem solving as a pedagogical practice is a recent focus of mathematics education research and of professional learning. This study employs the phenomenographic framework for studying teachers’ conceptions of ongoing professional learning opportunities focused on the teaching of mathematics through problem solving. Eleven grade 7 to 8 school teachers who participated in ongoing professional learning over the course of one to five years were purposively selected. Survey method was employed. Findings from the study reveal that most teachers view professional learning mainly as a source for ideas and resources, whereas others hold more complex views ranging from viewing professional learning …
