Ongoing Professional Development On Function-Based Behavior Interventions, Elizabeth Wawro Apr 2024

Ongoing Professional Development On Function-Based Behavior Interventions, Elizabeth Wawro

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Research findings indicate that function-based behavior interventions lead to a decrease in challenging behaviors more often than interventions that are not function-based. Staff at a PK-2nd grade school in Eastern Iowa have shared that they are lacking confidence in these areas, including function-based intervention strategies, behavior assessments, and behavior plans, and would benefit from professional development on these topics. This paper proposes a plan to implement additional professional development learning, provide opportunities for mentorship, and create staff motivation and understanding for the process of functional behavior assessments and interventions. Implementation of ongoing professional development and mentoring opportunities in this area …

Purpose

Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) can create participatory cultures by removing barriers to access materials, encouraging student modes of expression, differentiating student interactions through digital environments and increasing learner autonomy. Participatory cultures require competencies or new media literacy (NML) skills to be successful in a digital world. However, professional development (PD) often lacks training on CALL and its implementation to develop such skills. The purpose of this study is to describe teachers use of digital tools for multilingual learners through a relevant theoretical perspective.

Higher education institutions have become increasingly interested in exploring the innovative learning opportunities afforded by open educational resources and practices (OER). These same institutions have begun to more seriously consider ways to eradicate racism. However, few institutions have considered the ways that OER may prove useful in dismantling anti-racism and how to prepare instructional faculty to do so. Given their expertise and research skills, librarians may be uniquely positioned to take on this role. In this paper, we explore one such online asynchronous effort–adaptation and implementation of the Open for Anti-Racism faculty workshop in Learning Management System – and offer …

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This short article addresses a critical, but often underappreciated, aspect of the evolving suite of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions: food and agriculture systems, which account for at least a quarter of GHG emissions and more methane emissions than any other sector. The article invites government leadership to become more intentional in focusing on sustainable food procurement as a key strategy to mitigate climate change. The authors argue that public food procurement can – and should – be leveraged to generate a wide range of cascading social benefits beyond mitigating climate change and improving public health, including worker …

As procurement professionals (knowingly or unknowingly) await regulations promulgated in an effort to adapt to and mitigate climate change, significant opportunities exist within current federal regulations and policy to affect change. For now, the burden to stimulate innovation falls upon procurement professionals, individually, and collectively. In that context, information is power. What better place to start than with a good book?

With an eye towards informing productive conversations across the federal acquisition community about evolving expectations, practices, and policies in sustainable procurement, this article suggests some reading from the massive and diverse body of work related to climate change.

Beyond "Hard" Skills: Teaching Outward - And Inward-Facing Character-Based Skills To 1ls In Light Of Aba Standard 303(B)(3)'S Professional Identity Requirement, Marni Goldstein Caputo, Kathleen Luz

Faculty Scholarship

In this article, we share some ways in which we have adjusted our teaching to comply with Standard 303(b)(3) by addressing professional identity formation through the vehicles of outward-facing and inward-facing character-based skills. We believe that if law students do not intentionally start *811 exploring their professional identities as soon as they step foot into law school, they run the risk of believing that legal education and practice are somehow separate from their inner, personal identities as lawyers when, of course, they are, and ought to be, enmeshed. By injecting skills into the 1L curriculum that force both the development …

Exploring The Influence Of Pbis, Rti, And Mtss Implementation On Classroom Time, Student Behavior, And Academic Achievement: A Phenomenological Study, Robert L. Pettit

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to discover how elementary schools implement evidence-based, multi-tiered programs (i.e., Multi-Tiered System of Support [MTSS]) to improve students’ academic and behavioral successes. Today’s teachers are expected to have a constantly expanding knowledge base and skills that support working within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports, including Response to Intervention (MTSS/RTI). Since the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 2004 and subsequent regulations that allowed school districts to use alternate processes for determining learning disabilities, implementing Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI) frameworks in preschool to 12th …

From Becoming To Being: How Stem Teachers Develop Leadership Identities, Kelsey Quaisley, Wendy M. Smith, Brett A. Criswell, Rachel Funk, Anna Hutchinson

Secondary Education Faculty Publications

The development of STEM teacher leadership identity empowers K-12 teachers to make changes to improve teaching and learning. Identity development might not be productively supported in all school settings, however. Hence, external professional development programs should offer opportunities to supplement this identity development. We construct and propose a Can't-to-Becoming-to-Being model to describe STEM teacher leadership identity development as a progression of stages from weak to strong identity. Using interview data over two points in time with 127 STEM teacher leaders, we illustrate four stages of development: Can't, Can, Should, and Being. We also elucidate the conditions that teachers identify as …

Halt Certification: Reducing The Workload, Increasing The Rigour And Cutting The Cost, Lawrence Ingvarson, Hilary Hollingsworth

Teacher workforce and careers

In December 2022, federal, state and territory education ministers released a National Teacher Workforce Action Plan to improve teacher supply and retention in the profession. While recognising the important role that Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) certification could play, the plan also recognised that the current approach to certification was cumbersome for teachers and called for it to be ‘streamlined’. At the request of the education ministers, the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) has produced a revised Framework for the Certification of HALT Teachers. Guided by the Framework, certifying authorities across state and territory school systems …

Research shows that social emotional learning can positively improve student success both emotionally and academically. Social emotional programs, skills, and overall learning within school systems benefit staff, students, and stakeholders. When there is a lack of a clear and organized social emotional curriculum, students suffer and lack necessary skills to have long-term success both academically and personally. Using various research findings, a school improvement plan was created to construct a school-wide social-emotional system that includes both a research-based program and a variety of social emotional skills. This plan also ensures ongoing professional development for staff to implement with fidelity. The …
