Tree Mortality Following Prescribed Fire And A Storm Surge Event In Slash Pine (Pinus Elliottii Var. Densa) Forests In The Florida Keys, Usa, Jay P. Sah, Michael S. Ross, James R. Snyder, Danielle E. Ogurcak

Department of Earth and Environment

In fire-dependent forests, managers are interested in predicting the consequences of prescribed burning on postfire tree mortality. We examined the effects of prescribed fire on tree mortality in Florida Keys pine forests, using a factorial design with understory type, season, and year of burn as factors. We also used logistic regression to model the effects of burn season, fire severity, and tree dimensions on individual tree mortality. Despite limited statistical power due to problems in carrying out the full suite of planned experimental burns, associations with tree and fire variables were observed. Post-fire pine tree mortality was negatively correlated with …

Boron In Antarctic Granulite-Facies Rocks: Under What Conditions Is Boron Retained In The Middle Crust?, Edward S. Grew Dec 2009

Boron In Antarctic Granulite-Facies Rocks: Under What Conditions Is Boron Retained In The Middle Crust?, Edward S. Grew

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

This award, provided by the Antarctic Geology and Geophysics Program of the Office of Polar Programs, supports a project to investigate the role and fate of Boron in high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Larsemann Hills region of Antarctica. Trace elements provide valuable information on the changes sedimentary rocks undergo as temperature and pressure increase during burial. One such element, boron, is particularly sensitive to increasing temperature because of its affinity for aqueous fluids, which are lost as rocks are buried. Boron contents of unmetamorphosed pelitic sediments range from 20 to over 200 parts per million, but rarely exceed 5 parts …

Collection Development For The Department Of Psychology,, Charles D. Bernholz

UNL Libraries: Collection Development Policies

The University of Nebraska was founded in Lincoln in 1871, but it took almost two decades until psychology courses were offered. The man who was singularly responsible for bringing psychology to the University was Professor Harry Kirk Wolfe, and thus the history of the Psychology Department begins with him.

Harry K. Wolfe enrolled as an undergraduate in the University in 1876, just five years after the University was chartered. Four years later, he graduated in a class of eight. Three years later, he went to Leipzig Germany to study in the laboratory of the founder of experimental psychology, Professor Wilhelm …

Asymptotic Falloff Of Local Waveform Measurements In Numerical Relativity, Denis Pollney, Christian Reisswig, Nils Dorband, Erik Schnetter, Peter Diener Dec 2009

Asymptotic Falloff Of Local Waveform Measurements In Numerical Relativity, Denis Pollney, Christian Reisswig, Nils Dorband, Erik Schnetter, Peter Diener

Faculty Publications

We examine current numerical relativity computations of gravitational waves, which typically determine the asymptotic waves at infinity by extrapolation from finite (small) radii. Using simulations of a black hole binary with accurate wave extraction at r=1000M, we show that extrapolations from the near zone are self-consistent in approximating measurements at this radius, although with a somewhat reduced accuracy. We verify that ψ4 is the dominant asymptotic contribution to the gravitational energy (as required by the peeling theorem) but point out that gauge effects may complicate the interpretation of the other Weyl components. © 2009 The American Physical Society.
