Real Lies, White Lies And Gray Lies: Towards A Typology Of Deception, Erin M. Bryant Oct 2008

Real Lies, White Lies And Gray Lies: Towards A Typology Of Deception, Erin M. Bryant

Human Communication and Theatre Faculty Research

Despite its aversive label, deception is an extremely common social behavior that the average person performs on a daily basis (Camden, Motley, & Wilson, 1984; DePaulo, Kashy, Kirkendol, Wyer, & Epstein, 1996; Turner, Edgley, & Omstead, 1975). In fact, the use of white lies is so widespread they are often viewed as a form of communication competency that is necessary to successfully negotiate social interactions (Camden et al, 1984; Di Battista, 1994; Knapp & Comedena, 1975; Knapp, Hart, & Dennis, 1974). This study aimed to explore how college students perceive white lies and differentiate them from other types of lies …

Speaking The Right Language: The Scientific Method As A Framework For A Continuous Quality Improvement Program Within Academic Medical Research Compliance Units, Kurt B. Nolte, Douglas M. Stewart, Kevin C. O'Hair, William L. Gannon, Michael S. Briggs, A Marie Barron, Judy Pointer, Richard S. Larson

Pathology Research and Scholarship

The authors developed a novel continuous quality improvement (CQI) process for academic biomedical research compliance administration. A challenge in developing a quality improvement program in a nonbusiness environment is that the terminology and processes are often foreign. Rather than training staff in an existing quality improvement process, the authors opted to develop a novel process based on the scientific method--a paradigm familiar to all team members. The CQI process included our research compliance units. Unit leaders identified problems in compliance administration where a resolution would have a positive impact and which could be resolved or improved with current resources. They …

Interpersonal Cognitive Complexity And Cross-Cultural Dating: An Application Of Personal Constructs Psychology, Jennifer Gelar Oct 2008

Interpersonal Cognitive Complexity And Cross-Cultural Dating: An Application Of Personal Constructs Psychology, Jennifer Gelar

Senior Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to investigate interpersonal cognitive complexity, which is an individual difference variable describing a person’s cognitive system, and its role in cross-cultural relationships, particularly Caucasian-American males’ willingness to date a woman from another country. This study is an application of Personal Constructs Psychology and employs Crockett’s Role Category Questionnaire to tap into participants’ levels of social perception through the investigation of interpersonal cognitive complexity scores.

Autonomous And Intelligent Radio Switching For Heterogeneous Wireless Networks, Qiuyi Duan, Charles D. Knutson, Lei Wang, Daniel Zappala Sep 2008

Autonomous And Intelligent Radio Switching For Heterogeneous Wireless Networks, Qiuyi Duan, Charles D. Knutson, Lei Wang, Daniel Zappala

Faculty Publications

As wireless devices continue to become more prevalent, heterogeneous wireless networks - in which communicating devices have at their disposal multiple types of radios - will become the norm. Communication between nodes in these networks ought to be as simple as possible; they should be able to seamlessly switch between different radios and network stacks on the fly in order to better serve the user. To make this a possibility, we consider the challenging problems of when two communicating devices should decide to switch to a different radio, and which radio they should choose. We design an Autonomous and Intelligent …

Shift Report And Sbar: Strategies For Clinical Postconference., Fatima Ascano-Martin Sep 2008

Shift Report And Sbar: Strategies For Clinical Postconference., Fatima Ascano-Martin

Nursing | Faculty Scholarship

Conducting an effective postconference continues to be challenging because of low levels of student participation. Many students are exhausted at the end of the clinical day, which lessens their participation in postconference. In my experience, students often omit important information, such as patients’ age, sex, race, and other medical problems, during initial reports. Some have trouble providing patients’ information in an organized manner as well. The SBAR (situation-background-assessment-recommendation) communication tool can be used as a strategy to conduct clinical postconference.

Pediatric Residents' Use Of Jargon During Counseling About Newborn Genetic Screening Results, Michael Farrell, Lindsay Deuster, Jodi Donovan, Stephanie Christopher Aug 2008

Pediatric Residents' Use Of Jargon During Counseling About Newborn Genetic Screening Results, Michael Farrell, Lindsay Deuster, Jodi Donovan, Stephanie Christopher

College of Professional Studies Faculty Research and Publications

OBJECTIVE. The goal was to investigate pediatric residents’ usage of jargon during discussions about positive newborn screening test results.

METHODS. An explicit-criteria abstraction procedure was used to identify jargon usage and explanations in transcripts of encounters between residents and standardized parents of a fictitious infant found to carry cystic fibrosis or sickle cell hemoglobinopathy. Residents were recruited from a series of educational workshops on how to inform parents about positive newborn screening test results. The time lag from jargon words to explanations was measured by using “statements,” each of which contained 1 subject and 1 predicate.

RESULTS. Duplicate abstraction revealed …

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The purpose of this qualitative study, conducted in two Navajo Nation chapters, was to learn what makes Navajo marriages strong because no research has been done on this topic. Twenty-one Navajo couples (42 individuals) who felt they had strong marriages volunteered to participate in the study. Couples identifi ed the following marital strengths: (1) maintain communication, (2) nurture your relationship, (3) learn about marriage, (4) be prepared for marriage, and (5) have a strong foundation.

Link Quality Prediction For Wireless Devices With Multiple Radios, Qiuyi Duan, Charles D. Knutson, Lei Wang, Daniel Zappala Jun 2008

Link Quality Prediction For Wireless Devices With Multiple Radios, Qiuyi Duan, Charles D. Knutson, Lei Wang, Daniel Zappala

Faculty Publications

Communication between wireless devices ought to be as simple as possible; they should be able to seamlessly switch between different radios and network stacks on the fly in order to better serve the user. To make this a possibility, we consider the challenging problem of predicting link quality in a changing mobile environment. In this paper we present an algorithm that uses Weighted Least Squares Regression to predict whether a given link can meet application requirements in terms of throughput, delay, and jitter. We use a simulation study to demonstrate that our algorithm is able to predict link quality accurately …

Repeated Games Played In A Network, Markus Kinateder May 2008

Repeated Games Played In A Network, Markus Kinateder

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Delayed perfect monitoring in an infinitely repeated discounted game is modelled by allocating the players to a connected and undirected network. Players observe their immediate neighbors’ behavior only, but communicate over time the repeated game’s history truthfully throughout the network. The Folk Theorem extends to this setup, although for a range of discount factors strictly below 1, the set of sequential equilibria and the corresponding payoff set may be reduced. A general class of games is analyzed without imposing restrictions on the dimensionality of the payoff space. Due to this and the bilateral communication structure, truthful communication arises endogenously only …

Smart People, Stupid Networks: The Internet’S Equalizing Influence On Political Discourse And Engagement, Joseph D. Backer May 2008

Smart People, Stupid Networks: The Internet’S Equalizing Influence On Political Discourse And Engagement, Joseph D. Backer

Government and International Relations Honors Papers

This study explores the impact and influences of the Internet on formalized political discourse and engagement during the last decade. It traces the traditions and conventions of predominantly top-down and elite-dominated methods of information dissemination and citizen mobilization, beginning with newspapers at the turn of the nineteenth century and progressing to the professionalization and specialization experienced during the twentieth century. These sustained patterns of limited influence for non-elites had a marginalizing effect on participation and understandings of democratic responsiveness. Since the emergence of the Internet as a widespread medium of communication, however, prevailing hierarchies of control over discourse and engagement …

A New Voice For Chariho, Christopher Barrett May 2008

A New Voice For Chariho, Christopher Barrett

Senior Honors Projects

When the Founding Fathers drafted the U.S. Constitution, they recognized the importance of a free press by protecting it from government interference. Newspapers can wield incredible power in making positive change and building a better community. They also provide fantastic opportunities for journalists to learn about the world around them and become an expert in many fields. Journalists, however, are not limited to professionals in the newsrooms of the nation’s largest daily papers. Reporters of every age have made an impact on their communities. For my Honors Project I sought to bring this ability to high school students by designing …

Uri Student Bridge, Nicole Aragi

Senior Honors Projects

The project that came to be known as URI Student Bridge began with my amazing college experience and my desire to share that experience with others who were making the decision of whether to begin a college experience of their own. I have been very fortunate to have the funding and motivation to attend college, and have had many opportunities that I know others may not ever have. There are many options and opportunities that are available for graduating high school students. Many choose to begin a career with a high school education and never even consider the idea of …

Sparkle: What Every Teenage Girl Should Know, Alexandria D’Angelo

Senior Honors Projects

As a journalism major with an interest in women’s studies, I took time to educate myself about the tactics that the magazine media use to sell themselves. I focused on magazines, because I am a print-oriented journalism student with the goal of working for a newspaper or a magazine after graduation. During my research, I found that there are few publications in this country offering sound advice to problems that teenage girls face on a daily basis. Most magazines for teenage girls focus on celebrity style, gossip and make-up tips. There is nothing wrong with this form of entertainment, especially …

Hip Hop Is Dead: The Rhetoric Of Hip Hop, Kalyana Champlain May 2008

Hip Hop Is Dead: The Rhetoric Of Hip Hop, Kalyana Champlain

Senior Honors Projects

There is no doubt that Hip Hop has become a most influential international force. This animal has had many faces: two of these faces have been as a political tool as displayed by Public Enemy, and as a therapeutic release-- as I discovered while in AmeriCorps interning at AS220 for a program called Hip Hop 220, in which we took underprivileged youth and helped them to channel their energy through this art form. However, there is a dark side to this culture that includes extreme misogyny, self- sabotage, hatred, and an unhealthy obsession with status. As I reflected on these …

Opening The Aperture: Examining Images Of War In The Press, Jeffrey Albanese May 2008

Opening The Aperture: Examining Images Of War In The Press, Jeffrey Albanese

Senior Honors Projects

A number of policymakers have attributed America’s defeat in Vietnam, the first “television war,” to a collapse of public support caused by nightly news coverage of combat with associated iconic photographs and moving images. The assumptions underlying this opinion are that photographs and video footage of war have an inherent pacifistic bias, that the emotional impact of visual images can override reason, and that powerful images can drive or overturn foreign policy. This has led subsequent administrations to increase their control over the media’s coverage of war. During the Vietnam War, the press was relatively uncensored. As a response to …
