The Formation Of Tiktok’S Influencer-Led Mental Health Community: A Content Analysis Of Social Penetration Theory, Kellie Ford Stillwell
The Formation Of Tiktok’S Influencer-Led Mental Health Community: A Content Analysis Of Social Penetration Theory, Kellie Ford Stillwell
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The following research used a qualitative content analysis to explore the communicative and communal characteristics of online communities that form around the topic of positive mental health communication on the social media platform TikTok. These characteristics were analyzed in the context of social penetration theory in consideration of how TikTok influencers use thematic messaging and acts of self-disclosure to build and enhance their online communities centered on positive mental health communication. In total, 135 TikTok videos and their accompanying comment feeds were analyzed to identify emergent themes, patterns, and concepts relative to the communicative and communal characteristics that define online …

Investigating Communication Of Findings In Environmental Impact Assessment And Developing A Research Agenda For Improvement, Alan Bond, Francois Retief, Angus Morrison-Saunders, Jenny Pope, Reece C. Alberts, Claudine Roos, Dirk Cilliers
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) aims to embed consideration of the significance of predicted environmental consequences (the findings) of proposed developments into approval decision making. Achieving this aim relies on adequate communication of the findings of the EIA to the stakeholders, especially the decision makers responsible for the approval decision. However, the naïve assumption that this communication of findings can be effectively achieved through the publication of a written report pervades legislation worldwide, despite decades of evidence to the contrary. As a first step towards improving such communication, this research identifies the contingent conditions associated with effectively transferring EIA findings from …

Mind The Gap: Addressing The Deficit In Curriculum Addressing Rn-Md Communication, Amanda E. Dunn, Ann E. Morrison, David G. Parajon, Allison M. Phillips
HSC Education Days
Background
Effective communication among physicians and registered nurses is vital to ensure high quality healthcare delivery, yet there is limited literature available to guide curriculum development on this topic. The University of New Mexico School of Medicine (SOM) and College of Nursing (CON) sought to address this gap by creating an innovative event to jointly discuss MD-RN communication.
Design
3rd level RN students and 4th year MD students held a 2-hour session that included free writing, discussion of two cases of poor MD-RN communication during hospital discharge leading to adverse outcomes, a didactic on the SBAR communication tool, small group …

Fake News: Finding Truth In Strategic Communication, Anne Damisa
Fake News: Finding Truth In Strategic Communication, Anne Damisa
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Fake news is an old phenomenon that has become a new obsession and a menace to society due to technological advancement and the proliferation of social media, which has changed traditional journalism norms. As the spread of false information has increased these past few years, it has become increasingly difficult for information consumers to distinguish between facts and fakes. A comprehensive systematic literature review to extract themes revealed the major factors responsible for spreading fake news. This qualitative interpretative meta-synthesis (QIMS) aims to better understand and offer solutions to combat fake news. This Ph.D. dissertation will serve as a guide …

OBJECTIVES: Accurate and timely diagnosis relies on close collaboration between patients/families and clinicians. Just as patients have unique insights into diagnostic breakdowns, positive patient feedback may also generate broader perspectives on what constitutes a "good" diagnostic process (DxP).
METHODS: We evaluated patient/family feedback on "what's going well" as part of an online pre-visit survey designed to engage patients/families in the DxP. Patients/families living with chronic conditions with visits in three urban pediatric subspecialty clinics (site 1) and one rural adult primary care clinic (site 2) were invited to complete the survey between December 2020 and March 2022. We adapted the …

The Use Of A Behavior Chain Interruption Strategy To Teach Mands For Help With An Adult With Intellectual Disability And Deaf-Blindness, Hannah E. Thompson, Robbie Hanson
Faculty Scholarship
Individuals with deaf-blindness and co-occurring diagnoses, such as intellectual and developmental disabilities, may experience difculty with independence, specifcally with communication. One behavior-analytic procedure that may be useful for increasing independence and teaching communication to this population is the behavior-chain interruption strategy (BCIS). The current study examined the use of the BCIS to teach a 65-year-old deaf-blind participant with severe intellectual disability to use a SadoTech Elderly Monitoring Pager to notify others in the environment when help was needed. The researcher alternated between establishing operation (EO; help needed, items missing, or inoperable) and abolishing operation (AO; help not needed, items present, …
