Three-Pion Hanbury Brown–Twiss Correlations In Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions From The Star Experiment, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez Dec 2003

Three-Pion Hanbury Brown–Twiss Correlations In Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions From The Star Experiment, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

Data from the first physics run at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Au+Au collisions at √sNN=130   GeV, have been analyzed by the STAR Collaboration using three-pion correlations with charged pions to study whether pions are emitted independently at freeze-out. We have made a high-statistics measurement of the three-pion correlation function and calculated the normalized three-particle correlator to obtain a quantitative measurement of the degree of chaoticity of the pion source. It is found that the degree of chaoticity seems to increase with increasing particle multiplicity.

Robust Likelihood-Based Analysis Of Multivariate Data With Missing Values, Rod Little, An Hyonggin Dec 2003

Robust Likelihood-Based Analysis Of Multivariate Data With Missing Values, Rod Little, An Hyonggin

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The model-based approach to inference from multivariate data with missing values is reviewed. Regression prediction is most useful when the covariates are predictive of the missing values and the probability of being missing, and in these circumstances predictions are particularly sensitive to model misspecification. The use of penalized splines of the propensity score is proposed to yield robust model-based inference under the missing at random (MAR) assumption, assuming monotone missing data. Simulation comparisons with other methods suggest that the method works well in a wide range of populations, with little loss of efficiency relative to parametric models when the latter …

Legislative-Executive Relations And The Budgetary Process In Nigeria: An Evaluation Of The 1999 Constitution., S.C. Rapu Dec 2003

Legislative-Executive Relations And The Budgetary Process In Nigeria: An Evaluation Of The 1999 Constitution., S.C. Rapu

CBN Occasional Papers

Since the transition to civilian rule in May 29, 1999, the country has witnessed conflicts between the legislature and the executive over budget matters. These conflicts are not only restricted to the federal level but also a common phenomenon at the state government level. This paper discussed the poor relationship over the budget matters and made suggestions on how to improve the process. The paper surveyed the literature on the legal framework of the budgetary process in several countries. Thereafter, the paper examined the legal framework for the budgetary process in Nigeria as well as the issues involved. The paper …

Existence Value And Federal Preservation Regulation, David A. Dana Dec 2003

Existence Value And Federal Preservation Regulation, David A. Dana

Public Law and Legal Theory Papers

Conventional economic and political theory predicts that the states will underregulate the degradation or destruction of natural resources within their borders when some or all of the resulting adverse effects fall outside their borders, that is, upon out-of-staters. Academic critics of the federalization of environmental law agree with this conventional view at an abstract level, but, in their view, only the physical effects of the destruction of a natural resource on out-of-staters should count as an interstate externality that can justify federal intervention. The federal courts may be moving toward an even narrower conception of what constitutes an environmental externality …

Security Transformation, Steven Metz Dr. Dec 2003

Security Transformation, Steven Metz Dr.

Articles & Editorials

For the past 5 years, the United States has sought to transform its defense capabilities to reflect ongoing changes in technology, management techniques, the American political and economic landscapes, and the global security environment. The terrorist attacks of September 2001 and the ensuing Global War on Terrorism provided stark and tragic reminders of the need for such an adjustment. With American military forces engaged around the world in both combat and stabilization operations, the need for rigorous and critical analysis of security transformation has never been greater. Toward this end, The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard …

Background

Riboflavin synthase catalyzes the transformation of 6,7-dimethyl-8-ribityllumazine into riboflavin in the last step of the riboflavin biosynthetic pathway. Gram-negative bacteria and certain yeasts are unable to incorporate riboflavin from the environment and are therefore absolutely dependent on endogenous synthesis of the vitamin. Riboflavin synthase is therefore a potential target for the development of antiinfective drugs.

Results

A cDNA sequence from Schizosaccharomyces pombe comprising a hypothetical open reading frame with similarity to riboflavin synthase of Escherichia coli was expressed in a recombinant E. coli strain. The recombinant protein is a homotrimer of 23 kDa subunits as shown by sedimentation equilibrium …

Resonant Emergence Of Global And Local Spatiotemporal Order In A Nonlinear Field Model, Marcelo Gleiser, Rafael C. Howell Dec 2003

Resonant Emergence Of Global And Local Spatiotemporal Order In A Nonlinear Field Model, Marcelo Gleiser, Rafael C. Howell

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigate the nonequilibrium evolution of a scalar field in (2+1) dimensions. The field is set in a double-well potential in contact (open) or not (closed) with a heat bath. For closed systems, we observe the synchronized emergence of coherent spatiotemporal configurations, identified with oscillons. This initial global ordering degenerates into localized order until all oscillons disappear. We show that the synchronization is driven by resonant parametric oscillations of the field’s zero mode and that local ordering is only possible outside equipartition. None of these orderings occur for open systems.

Soil Organic Carbon Content And Composition Of 130-Year Crop, Pasture And Forest Land-Use Managements, Dean A. Martens, Thomas E. Reedy, David T. Lewis (Retired) Dec 2003

Soil Organic Carbon Content And Composition Of 130-Year Crop, Pasture And Forest Land-Use Managements, Dean A. Martens, Thomas E. Reedy, David T. Lewis (Retired)

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Conversion of former agricultural land to grassland and forest ecosystems is a suggested option for mitigation of increased atmospheric CO2. A Sharpsburg prairie loess soil (fine, smectitic, mesic Typic Argiudoll) provided treatments to study the impact of long-term land use on soil organic carbon (SOC) content and composition for a 130-year-old cropped, pasture and forest comparison. The forest and pasture land use significantly retained more SOC, 46% and 25%, respectively, compared with cropped land use, and forest land use increased soil C content by 29% compared with the pasture. Organic C retained in the soils was a function …
