A Dynamical Adaptive Resonance Architecture, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Gregory L. Heileman, Michael Georgiopoulos
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
A set of nonlinear differential equations that describe the dynamics of the ART1 model are presented, along with the motivation for their use. These equations are extensions of those developed by Carpenter and Grossberg (1987). It is shown how these differential equations allow the ART1 model to be realized as a collective nonlinear dynamical system. Specifically, we present an ART1-based neural network model whose description requires no external control features. That is, the dynamics of the model are completely determined by the set of coupled differential equations that comprise the model. It is shown analytically how the parameters of this …
Summary Results Of A Survey Of Economic Development In Texas Cities (Report 95-1), Delbert A. Taebel
Summary Results Of A Survey Of Economic Development In Texas Cities (Report 95-1), Delbert A. Taebel
Center for Economic Development Research and Service Publications
Economic development is the new kid on the block in city government. If one looks at any textbook on municipal administration published more than 10 years ago, economic development as a city function would not even have been mentioned. Yet, because of the dozens of conferences and flurry of articles focusing on economic development, it may seem to many that economic development has been around for a long time. Indeed, seven years ago the Institute of Urban Studies published an initial study entitled "Local Economic Development in Texas." Since then, of course, economic development has become a permanent program in …

Robust Lateral Control Of Highway Vehicles, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Raymond H. Byrne
Robust Lateral Control Of Highway Vehicles, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Raymond H. Byrne
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Vehicle lateral dynamics are affected by vehicle mass, longitudinal velocity, vehicle inertia, and the cornering stiffness of the tires. All of these parameters are subject to variation, even over the course of a single trip. Therefore, a practical lateral control system must guarantee stability, and hopefully ride comfort, over a wide range of parameter changes. This paper describes a robust controller which theoretically guarantees stability over a wide range of parameter changes. The robust controller is designed using a frequency domain transfer function approach. An uncertainty band in the frequency domain is determined using simulations over the range of expected …

Validation Of Contrast And Phenomenology In The Digital Imaging And Remote Sensing (Dirs) Lab's Image Generation (Dirsig) Model, John Mason, John Schott, Carl Salvaggio, Joseph Sirianni
Presentations and other scholarship
Comparison of the components and the overall fidelity of infrared synthetic image generation models with truth data and imagery is a crucial part of determining model validity and identifying areas in which improvements can be made. The Rochester Institute of Technology's Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation Model, DIRSIG, was validated in the midwave infrared (MWIR) and longwave infrared (LWIR) regions using measured meteorological, material, and radiometric data. Error propagation techniques clearly defmed areas where improvements to the model could be made (e.g. inclusion of clouds). An overall comparison of truth and synthetic images yields RMS errors of as …

Filter Design To Guarantee Convergence Of The Pseudolinear Regression Iir Adaptive Algorithm, Chaouki T. Abdallah, F. Perez-Gonzalez
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper we design a finite impulse response (FIR) filter to enforce the so-called strictly positive realness (SPR) condition in an adaptive infinite impulse response (IIR) filtering context. The paper results may then be used to guarantee the convergence of pseudolinear regression IIR adaptive algorithms.

Blur Identification Based On Higher Order Spectral Nulls, Andreas Savakis, Roger L. Easton
Blur Identification Based On Higher Order Spectral Nulls, Andreas Savakis, Roger L. Easton
Articles
The identification of the point spread function (PSF) from the degraded image data constitutes an important first step in image restoration that is known as blur identification. Though a number of blur identification algorithms have been developed in recent years, two of the earlier methods based on the power spectrum and power cepstrum remain popular, because they are easy to implement and have proved to be effective in practical situations. Both methods are limited to PSF's which exhibit spectral nulls, such as due to defocused lens and linear motion blur. Another limitation of these methods is the degradation of their …
