A study was undertaken of download and usage statistics for the institutional repository at the University of Wollongong, Australia, over the six-month period January-June 2006. The degree to which research output was made available, via open access, on Internet search engines was quantified. Google was identified as the primary access and referral point, generating 95.8% of the measurable full text downloads of repository content. Further long-term studies need to be carried out to more precisely identify factors affecting download rates of repository content. This paper presents the University of Wollongong’s collaborative project to embed English literacy in key accounting subjects of the Master of Professional Accounting (MPA). The project will develop a curriculum prototype for embedding literacy which enhances learning in general as well as English literacy at an academic/professional level. Since the concept of 'emotional intelligence' (EI) was first introduced, it has been developed, adapted and embraced by the business world and more recently, by academics. EI skills have been strongly associated with dynamic leadership, satisfying personal life experiences and success in the workplace. This has resulted in calls for the incorporation of EI competencies in university curricula. The chapter covers the period from the 1940s, when medical and lay awareness of the increasing incidence of CHD began to grow, to 1985, the year the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) began its widespread and concerted effort to sell the anti-fat, anti-cholesterol message to the nation. In establishing National Bioethics Organisations (NBOs), liberal democracies seek to acknowledge the diversity of strongly held ethical positions and the imperative to engage in public debate about important bioethical decisions. NBOs are typically given a range of responsibilities, including contributing to and stimulating public debate; providing expert opinion on relevant issues for policy deliberations; and developing public policy. The state is now found to have an interest in areas previously thought to be a matter of individual choice. This paper proposes a model for organisational analysis based on the conflation of two eminent theories for socio-technical analysis. These theories – Sociotechnical Systems and Action Regulation Theory – have been developed and used in Europe but have received little attention in Australia. The proposed model Socio-Technical-Action-Regulation-Theory (START) provides a comprehensive framework for analysis and investigation. This paper presents a non-traditional method of collecting staff activity data at an Australian university for the purposes of more accurately and completely identifying costs for use in an activity based costing (ABC) model. A discussion of the use of ABC in the nonprofit sector, with particular emphasis on higher education, is followed by a description of the research site and the previous data collection method. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is illuminate the way in which key constituents have influenced the process of setting an International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) for the extractive industries. By looking at a particular subset of mental illness in Australia, (schizophrenia), this article reflects on the way in which direct costs falling within the parametres of the health budget are privileged (inscribed) above indirect costs which fall outside this boundary (and thus fail to be appropriately inscribed). This article concludes that, from a social accounting point of view, this boundary is arbitrary and an example of poor accounting.

Fuzzy reasoning, case-based reasoning (CBR) and experience-based reasoning (EBR) or natural reasoning have been seriously studied for years. However, these studies essentially can be considered as a 1-dimensional approach, because their reasoning paradigm is 1-dimensional. This paper will propose a 2-dimensional (2D) approach that represents fuzzy reasoning, CBR, and EBR in a unified way. This approach also integrates many reasoning paradigms such as abduction, deduction and similarity-based reasoning into a unified treatment. The proposed approach will facilitate research and development of fuzzy reasoning, knowledge/experience management, knowledge-based systems, and CBR.

The Cost of Capital Model is used to calculate the net present value of projects within a multi-unit corporation but may provide incorrect answers for projects that have a level of risk that differs from the overall average risk level for the corporation. We demonstrate the use of the Pure Play Method for calculating the required rate of return for a division of a corporation that has risk characteristics that differ from the risk characteristics of the overall corporation. The synthesis of cyclic peptoids containing an indole hydrophobic scaffold has been realised through the ring-closing metathesis of diallylated precursors. The precursors and their cyclic counterparts possessed poor antibacterial activity in contrast to previously reported cyclic peptoids containing hydrophobic scaffolds.

The Impact Of Family Complexity On The Attitudes Toward An International Career Of Russian Nationals, H. W. Collier, R. E. Jones, Carl B. Mcgowan

This paper examines attitudes of Russian MBA students toward international careers and finds that family complexity impacts responses. Respondents who have complex family situations were slightly favorable toward international careers with average survey response values of about 2.50. The average response values for survey respondents who were not in complex family situations were neutral (3.00) toward an international career. The results of this survey indicate that Russian MBA students are, on average, only slightly favorable toward international careers. The average response values were not different based on gender since the average response value for males was 2.65 and the average …

This is an exploratory study designed to investigate the extent and nature of social and environmental reporting in corporate annual reports. Specifically, we examine the relationship between social and environmental disclosure and several corporate attributes in a developing country, Bangladesh. In order to do this, we have developed and utilized a disclosure index to measure the extent of disclosure made by companies in corporate annual reports. This paper presents a research model to explore the (i) direct effects of independent variables (interpersonal relationship and attractiveness of alternatives) on behavioural loyalty, (ii) the mediating effects of dependence and calculative commitment on the relationship between independent variables and behavioural loyalty, and (iii) the moderating role of subjective knowledge on the relationship between attractiveness of alternatives and dependence. A variety of user interfaces have been developed to support the querying of hierarchical multi-dimensional data in an OLAP setting such as pivot tables and more recently Polaris. They are used to regularly check portions of a dataset and to explore a new dataset for the first time. In this paper, we establish criteria for OLAP user interface capabilities to facilitate comparison. Two criteria are the number of displayed dimensions along which comparisons can be made and the number of dimensions that are viewable at once¿visual comparison depth and width. The pedagogical approach employed in the graphic design program at the University of Wollongong is based primarily on a blend of project-based and studio-based learning. The need for financial literacy has become increasingly significant with the deregulation of financial markets and the easier access to credit; the ready issue of credit cards; the rapid growth in marketing financial products and the Government’s encouragement for its citizens to take more self-responsibility for their retirement incomes. This paper reviews, compares and analyses studies conducted in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom to determine areas of both commonality and inconsistency. Chronic consumption of diets high in resistant starch (RS) leads to reduced fat cell size compared to diets high in digestible starch (DS) in rats and increases total and meal fat oxidation in humans. The aim of the present study was to examine the rate of lipogenesis in key lipogenic organs following a high RS or DS meal. Following an overnight fast, male Wistar rats ingested a meal with an RS content of 2% or 30% of total carbohydrate and were then administered an i.p bolus of 50 μCi 3H2O either immediately or 1 hour post-meal. This paper reports the findings of a study that examines the application of transformational leadership in a cross-cultural setting. This study used Baron and Kenny’s (1986) and Parker’s (2003) mediation model, Podsakoff and Mackenzie’s (1990) scale of transformational leadership behaviour, and Herscovitch and Meyer’s (2002) items on commitment to change. Participants comprising pastors and church members were drawn from six Chinese- and three English-speaking church congregations in St Louis, Missouri, USA. The research findings suggest that the members of Chinese-speaking churches were positively affected by task-oriented behaviors and three types of commitment to change.
