The Politics Of Fertility: Population And Pronatalism In Ladakh, Jennifer Aengst Jul 2103

The Politics Of Fertility: Population And Pronatalism In Ladakh, Jennifer Aengst

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

In India’s northwestern region of Ladakh, the linkage between reproduction, politics, and fertility is both complicated and contested, evident in increasing population discourses and the re-emergence of a Buddhist pronatalist movement. This paper examines the impacts of population discourses and pronatalism on women’s reproductive decision-making, as well as on the delivery of healthcare throughout Ladakh. Population discourses currently circulating produce two reproductive subjects—the “hyper-fertile Muslim woman” and the “vulnerable Buddhist”—both of which have been central in revitalizing Buddhist pronatalism. Data collected through a hospital-based survey and interviews shows that fertility behavior is shaped by religious interpretations, political mobilization, and pressure …

Application Of Evolutionary Algorithms For Optimization Of Operation Modes Of Regional Electric Power Systems, Isamiddin Khakimovich Siddikov, Oksana Vitalevna Porubay

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

The paper presents the possibilities of using evolutionary algorithms to solve the problem of optimizing the operation modes of electric power facilities in the presence of constraints in the form of inequalities and equalities. The limits of constraints have a variable character, depending on the generated and consumed energy. Existing methods used for the optimization of modes are based on general principles and approaches to optimization, which usually adapt to the specifics of the problem. In electric power facilities, optimization problems have some peculiarities, among which is the presence of multiple constraints applied to both independent and dependent variables. Many …

A Mathematical Model For Mosquito Population Dynamics, Christian Evans, Jemal Mohammed-Awel, Andreas Lazari

Georgia Journal of Science

In this study, a deterministic mathematical model for mosquito population dynamics is presented. The use of chemical insecticide to control population is incorporated into the model. It is assumed that there is insecticide sensitive (sensitive-type) and insecticide resistant (resistant-type) mosquitoes in the environment. Conditions for the existence and stability of four equilibria of the model have been established. Numerical simulations are carried out to confirm the analytical results and the implications, in terms of mosquito control in the environment, are discussed.

Tillering Potential And Stability Of Winter Wheat Varieties Commonly Grown In Kansas, L. O. Pradella, R. P. Lollato

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

The tillering potential and stability of winter wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) can be positive traits by conferring adaptation to distinct production environments. The literature demonstrates a high correlation between the tillering potential and many yield components. However, the actual impact of tillering potential on grain yield is not clear. Our goal was to quantify the tillering potential and stability of a range of winter wheat varieties. Field experiments were conducted in six locations in the state of Kansas during the 2021–2022 season. A complete factorial treatment structure of twenty-five winter wheat varieties by two seeding rates (400,000 seeds per …

Breeding Season Survival And Reproduction In A High-Density Bobwhite Population: A Case Study, William E. Palmer, Shane D. Wellendorf, D. Clay Sisson

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

The demographic behavior of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus; hereafter, bobwhite) populations at high densities could provide important insights into why bobwhite populations fluctuate. Therefore, we documented breeding season demographics of bobwhites to understand how prebreeding density influenced reproductive effort and postbreeding density on an intensively managed property in Leon County, Florida, USA, 2002–2006. We estimated prebreeding bobwhite density each April using multi-observer strip-transects and postbreeding densities each November using covey call grid surveys. We radio-tagged 217 bobwhites in March and located bobwhites at least 5 days/week, 15 April–30 September to determine vital rates. Prebreeding density ranged from 1.5–8.6 …

The Impact Of Democracy On Economic Growth In South Asia, Rijul Alvan Das, Siddharth --

Undergraduate Economic Review

One of the most fundamental themes that combine the disciplines of political science and economics is the role played by democracy in the economic growth of a country. Does democracy accelerate or hinder growth? The literature is divided on this topic with both sides presenting strong empirical and theoretical views. This paper studies this issue in the context of South Asia. Our theoretical framework brings out the key characteristics that are often highlighted in both sides of the intellectual debate. Using econometric methods and tools such as Pooled, Fixed and Random Effects estimates, we aim to study the relationship between …

Averting The Looming Food Crisis: A Clarion Call To Immediate And Near-Term Policy Action, Alwan A. Hassan

Economic and Financial Review

Nigeria suffers from food insecurity and poverty. It is estimated that the number of hungry people in Nigeria is over 53 million, which is about 25.0 per cent of the country’s total population of about 212 million. Also, about 43.0 per cent of Nigerians live below the poverty line. These statistics are worrisome, given that Nigeria, in the 1950s and 1960s, was not only self-sufficient in food production, but was also a net exporter of food to other regions of the continent (Ajayeoba, 2010). A nation is food secure when food is available and accessible in sufficient quantity and quality …

Averting The Looming Food Crisis: A Clarion Call To Immediate And Near-Term Policy Action, Emmanuel A. Onwioduokit

Economic and Financial Review

Discussions on food security have gained traction in the recent past, especially in Africa and other developing economies. Several horrifying images of famished families, particularly around “The Horn of Africa” including Somalia, Ethiopia, and some parts of Kenya, projected globally in both the print and electronic media vividly illustrate the perils of food crises. In Nigeria, food constitute a substantial share of family budgets, particularly for low-income households. When prices of essential foods items increase poorer people suffer the adverse impacts more disproportionately. While clothing and shelter are basic necessities of life, food remains the most vital, given its centrality …

Strong Church, Weak Catholicism: Transformations In Brazilian Catholicism, Carlos Alberto Steil, Rodrigo Toniol

Journal of Global Catholicism

In this paper we explore data on Catholicism from the 2010 census in Brazil, as well as other data from the Center for Religious Statistics and Social Investigation. Using these statistics, we question those arguments that explain the reduction in the number of Catholics in Brazilian society as a problem in the institution’s adaptation in response to the challenges of evangelization, or as a lack of ministerial vocations to meet the religious demands of the people. Pursuing an alternative argument, we consider the weakening of the relationship between the Catholic institution and traditional popular Catholicism to be a fundamental aspect …

Escaping Destructive Communities Towards An Underground Utopian Space, Rana Dghaily Mar 2021

Escaping Destructive Communities Towards An Underground Utopian Space, Rana Dghaily

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Going to the underground has always been the escape for people in harsh cases like wars and natural disasters. While the city centers are surrendered to the seizing through global capital, more density is forced on the territories of the city in the form of urban sprawl, leading to the uncontrolled, unplanned and unrestricted urban spreading, and then forcing to look for an escape for this continuous growth. Subterranean architecture would be the escaping solution that architects will depend on in the future. Subterranean architecture refers to the underground structure that is built in unique sites and where traditional buildings …

Population Trends In The Area Where Nuclear Power Plants Are Located Before And After The Fukushima Accident And Their Impact On The Estimated Population, Takeshi Inoue

Japanese Society and Culture

Comparing the population trends in the areas where nuclear power plants are located with those in the neighborhood reveals it is declining and more so in the former than in the neighborhood. The cause is thought to be that the nuclear power plant was shut down for a long time after the earthquake and the Fukushima accident. However, such a decline is not necessarily due to the decrease in employment opportunities of the electric industry itself, but from electric-related industries. Regarding the estimated future population, the percentage of nuclear-located areas with the possibility of disappearing as defined by the Regional …

Wheat Variety Response To Seeding Rate Across A Range Of Kansas Environments In 2019–2020, R. P. Lollato, B. R. Jaenisch

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Due to the inconsistencies of wheat response to seeding rate, we conducted an experiment in seven Kansas locations during the 2019–2020 winter wheat growing season with the objectives of determining whether higher yielding environments warrant lower seeding rates than lower yielding environments, and whether this response depends on wheat variety. The wheat varieties ‘Larry,’ ‘SY Monument,’ ‘Tatanka,’ and ‘WB4303’ were seeded at 200,000, 400,000, 800,000, and 1,600,000 seeds per acre at Ashland Bottoms, Belleville, Conway Springs, Great Bend, Hutchinson, Leoti, and Manhattan. Growing season rainfall in the studied locations ranged from 6.7 to 24.2 inches, which corresponded to anywhere from …

Likelihood Of Surviving Children Using A Probability Model, Shubhagata Roy Nov 2020

Likelihood Of Surviving Children Using A Probability Model, Shubhagata Roy

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Child birth is a natural phenomenon which is required to develop a society. Controlled population growth is a boon for any developing country and taking care of it is the prime responsibility of the concerned government. Unfortunately, in India, child mortality had been a real curse for decades and there were no concrete models which could estimate the number of surviving children in a given time period. In the recent times, lots of initiatives have been taken by the government and other agencies for controlling the fast growing population and at the same time to reduce child mortality. Few of …

Before Disaster Strikes: Preparing America To Be Disaster Resilient, Cole Hoyt

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

Major natural disasters in the United States are occurring more frequently and are causing more damage and destruction than ever before in the nation’s history. With the increased number and intensity of natural disasters, America’s failing infrastructure and current resiliency plan are inadequate to successfully prepare and respond to such catastrophic events. As a direct result, natural disasters in the United States cause scores of deaths and injuries, inflict billions of dollars’ worth of damage per disaster, and make it increasingly more difficult for Americans to recover and return to a sense of normalcy.

The Holy Spirit And The Nineteenth-Century Mission To Hawaii, Paul Miller Apr 2020

The Holy Spirit And The Nineteenth-Century Mission To Hawaii, Paul Miller

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

This article explores the missionary successes and failures of nineteenth- century Hawaii. It then explores the Holy Spirit connection to these successes and the lack of such a connection regarding the failures. It suggests missionary failures in the area of supernaturalism and Holy Spirit listening, failures to which the missionaries were particularly prone given their almost mono-focus on “civilization” and “education.” It then suggests native Hawaiian failures in, first, addressing their depopulation problem and, second, in attaining their aspirations of economic progress. Finally, facing these failures, it probes certain Holy Spirit perspectives as their potential solution.
