Framing An Adversary: Ethnic Nationalism In The First Khmer Newspaper, Ian Lowman
Framing An Adversary: Ethnic Nationalism In The First Khmer Newspaper, Ian Lowman
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
The study of nationalism examines both global patterns and the singleness of local response. In most fledgling nation-states, the modern phenomena of print and western capitalism transformed indifferent individuals into a politicized public. Printing houses profitably publicized and glorified vernaculars while propagating European ideas of state borders, national cultures, and patriotism. By employing this medium, nationalists toyed with ideologies specific to the concerns of their community; French nationalism thrived on an abstract battle against tyranny while Algerians couched their nationality in the struggle for freedom from France. Each nation's self-conception reflected a search for an ideal of commonality and a …

Reporting A Rural Reality: A Case Study Of An Agricultural Newspaper’S Series On The Rural Opioid Epidemic, Cara R. Lawson, Courtney Meyers, Amy Boren, Erica Irlbeck, Amber Mccord
Journal of Applied Communications
Opioid drug abuse has created an epidemic recognized as a public health emergency in 2017, and the detrimental impacts of this epidemic have reached into rural America. When it comes to presenting information via the mass media, communications professionals serve as gatekeepers for what information is passed on to media consumers. Additionally, news organizations place certain degrees of importance upon issues through the amount of coverage dedicated to an issue. In late 2016, when the Farm and Dairy newspaper editorial staff decided to dedicate a vast amount of time and resources to covering Ohio and Pennsylvania’s rural opioid epidemic, a …

The Boundaries Of Watchdog Journalism At The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Aras Coskuntuncel
The Boundaries Of Watchdog Journalism At The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Aras Coskuntuncel
Field Notes: A Journal of Collegiate Anthropology
In the early 21st century, daily newspapers across the United States struggled with how to respond to economic and technological pressures. Using ethnographic methods, this article explores one newspaper’s—the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s—response to those challenges, with a particular focus on how journalists’ definition of the news affects the information the public is exposed to. I argue that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel responded to economic and technological challenges by redefining news. However, that redefinition brought with it unforeseen problems, both in the practice and the product of journalism. The redefinition increased tensions between watchdog and beat reporters, and between older, …

A Publicist Discource As A Conceptual Linguistic Unit Forming The Base Of The Text, Dilfuza Teshabaeva Doctor Of Science, Professor, Shahodat Usmonova Teacher
Philology Matters
The article discusses the features of a publicistic style, justifies the standard of this style, which is based on the transfer of the socially significant information. Publicistic discourse was also analyzed as a conceptual unit of the text. The structure of speech in a journalistic text also depends on the consistency of the linguistic units, which contain conceptual and evaluative units. One of the main features of the press is a trend towards social assessment. It is obvious that newspaper language is not intended simply to describe objects and events by their nature, but to give them a certain assessment …
Preventing Tax-Exempt Propaganda: The Case For Defining The Second Prong Of The Methodology Test, Jordanne Miller
Preventing Tax-Exempt Propaganda: The Case For Defining The Second Prong Of The Methodology Test, Jordanne Miller
Catholic University Law Review
Under current Treasury Regulations, various propaganda groups throughout the United States are exempt from paying federal income tax. This is so because the current test used by the IRS to determine tax-exempt eligibility, the methodology test, is incapable of separating wild propaganda from viewpoints supported by facts.
The IRS created the methodology test in the late 1970s/early 1980s. Since then, groups denied tax-exempt status have repeatedly challenged its validity. The IRS has responded, and the test has evolved. However, the second prong of the test remains undefined—it is still unclear what it means for facts to be “distorted.” This Comment …

A Content Analysis Of Antibiotic Use In Livestock In National U.S. Newspapers, Garrett M. Steede, Courtney Meyers, Nan Li, Erica Irlbeck, Sherice Gearhart
Journal of Applied Communications
The discovery of the antibiotic Aureomycin as a growth promotor for the livestock industry was viewed as revolutionary in 1950. The use of antibiotics as growth promoters in livestock, however, has been questioned by health professionals concerned with the role this use might play in the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria. As a public health issue, newspapers have covered this topic since its discovery. Media, such as newspapers, have used frames to discuss the topic over time as new discoveries have occurred, policy changes have been implemented, and food animal production has changed. The purpose of this study was to …

Enemies Of The State: The Symbolic Annihilation Of White-Zimbabwean Identity In The Twenty-First Century, Rick Malleus
Enemies Of The State: The Symbolic Annihilation Of White-Zimbabwean Identity In The Twenty-First Century, Rick Malleus
Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD
This article explores the Zimbabwean government-controlled newspapers’ symbolic annihilation of white-Zimbabwean identity in the twenty-first century. Zimbabwe has been through political, social, and economic upheaval in the last 15 years, and it is in this context that the media’s construction of white identity is examined. Using a content analysis of online articles from The Herald and The Chronicle, six themes of constructed white identity were identified. The government media’s motivation for this symbolic annihilation of white-Zimbabwean identity is discussed, and the article concludes with a consideration about why this construction of white-Zimbabwean identity matters.

Keeping An Eye On Youghal: The Freeman's Journal And The Plan Of Campaign In East Cork, 1886-92, Felix M. Larkin
Irish Communication Review
THE SKIBBEREEN EAGLE FAMOUSLY declared in 1898 that it would be keeping an eye on the Tsar of Russia (Potter, 2011: 49, 55–6). A decade or so earlier, Youghal was very much in the eye of the press – and, indeed, in the eye of the storm – during the Plan of Campaign, the second phase of the Land War in Ireland. The tenants on the nearby Ponsonby estate were the first to adopt the Plan of Campaign in November 1886 in order to secure lower rents (Donnelly, 1975: 334, 355– 360). The struggle that ensued dragged on inconclusively until …
