A well-balanced intracellular iron trafficking in glial cells plays a role in homeostatic processes. Elevated intracellular iron triggers oxidative stress and cell damage in many neurological disorders, including migraine. This study aimed to investigate the effects of glyceryl trinitrate (GTN), on cellular iron homeostasis, matrixmetalloproteinase (MMP)-9, and calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) receptor (CRLR/CGRPR1) production in microglia, astrocyte, and meningeal cell cultures. Primary glial and meningeal cells in culture were exposed to GTN for 24 h. Messenger RNA expression was assessed using qPCR. Iron accumulation was visualized via modified Perl?s histochemistry. MMP-9 levels in cell culture supernatants were measured using …

Thalamocortical Network Interruption: A Fresh View For Migraine Symptoms, Hayrunni̇sa Bolay Belen Jan 2020

Thalamocortical Network Interruption: A Fresh View For Migraine Symptoms, Hayrunni̇sa Bolay Belen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Migraine is a multifaceted brain disorder where multisensory disturbances are associated with headache. Yet sensory symptoms are conventionally justified by dysfunctions confined to the cerebral cortex, a perspective through the complex interplay of thalamocortical network would provide the entire picture, more pertinent to the central sensory processing. It is important to consider thalamus as a hub that integrates multiple domains via extensive connections among anatomically and functionally separate cortical areas. Accordingly, cortical spreading depression (CSD), implicated in migraine pathophysiology can be seen as a tool to disconnect thalamocortical network by functionally eliminating cerebral cortex. Hence, including thalamic reticular nucleus and …

Analysis Of The Pathomechanism And Treatment Of Migraines Related To The Role Of The Neuropeptide Cgrp, Marvi S. Qureshi

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Migraines are a type of headache that specifically act on only one side of the head, although about 30% of patients with migraines may experience a bilateral headache. Migraines are brain disorders that typically involve issues of sensory processing taking place in the brainstem. Possible causation has been linked to blood vessels, blood flow, and oxygen levels in the brain. Migraines can be described in three phases, all of which have a common neuropeptide known as the calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP). CGRP increases in plasma have been linked to migraine headaches, and specific treatment plans have been tailored to …

The Built Environment And Its Patterns: A View From The Vision Sciences, A.J. Wilkins, Olivier Penacchio, Ute Leonards

SDAR* Journal of Sustainable Design & Applied Research

Abstract Visual patterns are all around us. Despite overwhelming evidence from the visual sciences that some visual patterns, in particular highly-geometric and repetitive patterns, can be aversive, patterns in our visual environment are rarely considered with regard to their impact on brain, behaviour and well-being. Yet, attempts toward developing healthier, more inclusive cities recently attracted negative headlines, for example for their use of dazzling floor patterns in public spaces that lead to discomfort, avoidance behaviours and falls, particularly in older citizens. Recent developments in analysis now allow us to measure and predict adverse effects of patterns in the real world. …
