Robots, Gps/Gis, And Programming Technologies: The Power Of "Digital Manipulatives" In Youth Extension Experiences, Bradley S. Barker, Neal Grandgenett, Gwen Nugent, Viacheslav I. Adamchuk
The Journal of Extension
The study reported here examined the effectiveness of educational robotics combined with GPS/GIS technologies used as "digital manipulatives" in the teaching of concepts in science, engineering, and technology. Based on the success of previous summer camps, the study also examined a scaling-up of the intervention from 38 participants to 147. The 147 youth (ages 10-15) participated in one of six summer camps held in Nebraska during 2008. Results indicate that participants scored higher on the content posttest than the pretest. The study further examined the differential results. The article makes recommendations for further studies, while acknowledging the potential power of …
The Sky's The Limit: Integrating Geospatial Tools With Pre-College Youth Education, John Mcgee, Jeff Kirwan
The Sky's The Limit: Integrating Geospatial Tools With Pre-College Youth Education, John Mcgee, Jeff Kirwan
The Journal of Extension
Geospatial tools, which include global positioning systems (GPS), geographic information systems (GIS), and remote sensing, are increasingly driving a variety of applications. Local governments and private industry are embracing these tools, and the public is beginning to demand geospatial services. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) reported that the pool of geospatial professionals is unable keep up with demand. It is important that pre-college educators begin implementing these tools in the classroom to stimulate the educational pipeline. Twenty-four teachers from Fairfax, Virginia were involved in an educational approach that integrates GIS with civic and environmental education.
Watershed Modeling Using Gis Technology: A Critical Review
Watershed Modeling Using Gis Technology: A Critical Review
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
Understanding and managing water resource problems involves complex processes and interactions within the watershed surface and subsurface. The imposition of total maximum daily load (TMDL) regulations on the pollutant influx to a watershed has created a strong demand for new assessment tools. The spatial scales relevant to transport of the pollutants may span many orders of magnitude, ranging from field plots to regional hydrological systems. As the demand for and development of watershed modeling capabilities have evolved, geographic information systems (GIS) in tandem with remote sensing technologies have played an essential role supporting both data collection and analysis. This paper …

Google Earth Dissemination Of Soil Survey Derived Interpretations For Land Use Planning, Nj Hamilton, B Mijatovic, Tg Mueller, Bd Lee, B. W. Kew, Cetin Haluk, Anastasios D. Karathanasis
The Journal of Extension
The Cooperative Extension Service could help individuals and communities make more informed decisions regarding residential development by providing soil survey-derived land use assessment data through Google Earth, a popular Web-based map viewer. This article describes how existing data sets can be more readily visualized with commercially available Internet software and provides examples of how these maps can be interpreted for land use assessment. Finally, the opportunities and constraints of using Google Earth as a tool for disseminating land use planning information are described.
Gis Technology Helps Rid Southeast Asia Of Landmines And Uxo, Carla Wheeler
Gis Technology Helps Rid Southeast Asia Of Landmines And Uxo, Carla Wheeler
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Southeast Asia remains one of the most heavily mined regions in the world. Cambodia, which has a 2009 deadline for the Ottawa Convention, has requested a deadline extension because it will be impossible to meet its clearance obligations by then. The Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority is being aided by software from ESRI, which is used to create databases, maps and charts to record the location of mines and unexploded ordnance. This information is used to more effectively locate and demine contaminated areas. As Cambodia’s population increases, it is becoming more critical to clear the land of mines.
An Interface Of Drainage Division For Modeling Wetlands And Riparian Buffers In Agricultural Watersheds
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
In a complex watershed, isolated wetlands, riparian wetlands and riparian buffers provide important functions such as flood attenuation and water quality improvement. For conservation purposes, it is critical to properly delineate drainage areas for these features such that their impacts on runoff, sediment and pollutant transport can be reasonably simulated. However, traditional methods for watershed delineation typically fill depressions or ignore riparian features in order to maintain the continuity of surface flow pattern. In this study we develop an ArcView geographic information system (GIS) interface for watershed delineation that accounts for wetlands and riparian buffers. Based on digital elevation model …
Estimating Spatial Sediment Delivery Ratio On A Large Rural Catchment
Estimating Spatial Sediment Delivery Ratio On A Large Rural Catchment
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
Soil erosion and sediment yield from catchments are key limitations to achieving sustainable land use and maintaining water quality in streams, lakes and other water bodies. Controlling sediment loading requires the knowledge of the soil erosion and sedimentation. However, sediment yield is usually not available as a direct measurement but estimated by using a sediment delivery ratio (SDR). An accurate prediction of SDR is important in controlling sediments for sustainable natural resources development and environmental protection. There is no precise procedure to estimate SDR, although the USDA has published a handbook in which the SDR is related to drainage area. …

James Madison University Professors Teach Gis In Slovenia, Margaret S. Busé
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
GIS is one of the primary information management tools available for humanitarian demining, and is central to any national demining effort. This workshop focused on strengthening user’s knowledge of the GIS toolbox.
