The Flipped Library Classroom At Georgia State University: A Case Study, M. Leslie Madden, Ida T. Martinez

Georgia Library Quarterly

Although the flipped classroom concept has gained attention in the media and professional literature in the past year, versions of this instructional delivery method have existed for some time. Librarians and other educators have created tutorials and other learning objects as a means of supplementing and supplanting traditional face-to-face instruction. Librarians at Georgia State University are experimenting with using learning objects to teach basic skills, while scheduling face-to-face workshops and instruction sessions to delve deeper into discipline-based research processes. This paper details those efforts, highlights an established “flipped classroom” practice with the Psychology department, and presents evidence of improved student …

Designing Information Literacy Instruction For Adult Learners, Laura Rhoden Jan 2015

Designing Information Literacy Instruction For Adult Learners, Laura Rhoden

The Christian Librarian

An issue currently facing many academic librarians involves the challenge of designing information literacy instruction for nontraditional students, particularly adult learners. Increasingly, adults are enrolling in college later in life to complete undergraduate degrees. Because information literacy instructional research and instructional methods commonly focus on traditional students, academic librarians struggle to design information literacy instruction that meets the needs of this more mature population. This article examines information literacy instructional design basics, characteristics of adult learners and adult learning theory, as well as presents examples for designing information literacy instruction for adult students.
