Reaching Extension's Clientele: Exploring Patterns Of Preferred Information Channels Among Small Farm Operators, Glenn Israel
Reaching Extension's Clientele: Exploring Patterns Of Preferred Information Channels Among Small Farm Operators, Glenn Israel
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Effective delivery methods are important to the impact of Extension programs. The effectiveness of delivering Extension programs can be increased by matching the information channels used by Extension to those preferred by segments of the clientele. This study explores the preference patterns of clientele for obtaining information. The influence of selected individual and structural characteristics on those patterns also is examined. Data from a mail survey (using the Total Design Method, or TDM) of small farm operators from six counties in Florida indicate that preference patterns vary. The analysis, using confirmatory factor analysis, verified the presence of a lower cost …

Creating Entrepreneurship In Rural Sociology, Rusty Brooks
Creating Entrepreneurship In Rural Sociology, Rusty Brooks
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Southern rural sociology finds itself at an important political, social, and economic juncture. Given present funding constraints, land grant university faculty working in rural sociology must assume a more entrepreneurial posture if the discipline in to survive the challenges that confront it. The emergence of the importance of policy analysis to the agenda of contemporary southern politics provides a "market window" for rural sociologists to contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of rural sociology in the region and to the present and future quality of life in the South. This paper examines these issues and proposes an entrepreneurial model for …
The Receptivity To Housing Programs In The Rural South, Gladys Shelton, Kenneth Gruber
The Receptivity To Housing Programs In The Rural South, Gladys Shelton, Kenneth Gruber
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Adequate and affordable housing continues to be a serious problem in many rural areas of the Southern United States. This problem has been exacerbated by several major events in the past two decades, including the "population turnaround" in the 1970s, which increased the demand for housing as the number of people living in rural areas increased. The housing affordability crisis then resulted from a spiraling rise in housing costs greater than household annual income and a reduction in federal spending for housing programs. The combined effect of these events suggests local communities must now look more to state level initiatives …
Testing Tdm Modifications With Mail Surveys During A Southern Farm Study: A Research Note, John Ballweg
Testing Tdm Modifications With Mail Surveys During A Southern Farm Study: A Research Note, John Ballweg
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Based on data collected during a mail survey of crime and vandalism on farms in a southern state, this study involves a modification of two procedures in the Total Design Method: 1) individually signed cover letters; and 2) replacement questionnaires for the second mailing. While the first procedure was found to have no significant effect on the return rate, the inclusion of replacement questionnaires with the second mailing improved the response rate by a wide margin (more than double the letter-only mailing). The implications of audience type (in this case a farm audience) and other survey design features on response …
Community Attachment: A Research Note Examining The Effects Of Gender, Stephanie Sayers Fowler
Community Attachment: A Research Note Examining The Effects Of Gender, Stephanie Sayers Fowler
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The purpose of the study is to examine the effects of gender on feelings of community attachment. This is done through the development of a measure of emotional response to a community, which is then tested, using the techniques of confirmatory factor analysis, for gender variation. The data are from a 1985 survey mailed to 1400 residents of four rural North Carolina counties. Responses from 1200 of these residents provide the sample. The author develops a model which focuses not on the well established relationship between satisfaction with service provision and community attachment, but on the relationship between emotional responses …
Microbeam Studies Of The Sensitivity Of Structures Within Living Cells, L. A. Braby
Microbeam Studies Of The Sensitivity Of Structures Within Living Cells, L. A. Braby
Scanning Microscopy
Determining the biological effects of low doses of radiation with high linear energy transfer (LET) is complicated by the stochastic nature of charged-particle interactions. Populations of cells exposed to very low radiation doses contain a few cells which have been hit by a charged particle, while the majority of the cells receive no radiation damage. At somewhat higher doses, a few cells receive two or more events. Because the effects of damage produced by separate events can interact in the cell, we have had to make assumptions about the nature of these interactions in order to interpret the results of …
The Effect Of Colcemid On The Heat Survival Of Mitotic V79 Chinese Hamster Cells, J. G. Szekely, G. P. Raaphorst, A. U. Lobreau, S. Delaney, E. I. Azzam
The Effect Of Colcemid On The Heat Survival Of Mitotic V79 Chinese Hamster Cells, J. G. Szekely, G. P. Raaphorst, A. U. Lobreau, S. Delaney, E. I. Azzam
Scanning Microscopy
V79 Chinese hamster cells were collected by colcemid addition to study the effect of heat on mitosis. When they were heated at 42°C and 45°C in the presence of 0.06 μg/mL colcemid, cell survival increased over the control samples, which were heated in ordinary medium. Scanning electron microscopy showed that cells heated to 45°C in the presence or absence of colcemid had fewer microvilli on the surface, but they did not have increased bleb formation. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the chromatin was diffuse in the heated cells and the kinetochores were indistinct. The mitochondria in the heated cells were …

Impacts Of Black-Tailed Prarie Dog Rodenticides On Nontarget Passerines, Anthony D. Apa, Daniel W. Uresk, Raymond L. Linder
Great Basin Naturalist
In 1983 zinc phosphide, strychnine with prebait, and strychnine without prebait were applied to black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies in west central South Dakota. Short-term (four days later) and long-term (one year later) impacts of the rodenticides on Horned Larks (Eremophila alpestris) and other granivorous birds inhabiting prairie dog colonies were evaluated. Hrned Larks and 49 other bird species were observed. Immediate impacts reduced Horned Lark relative densities 66% with strychnine only and 55% with prebaited strychnine. Zinc phosphide caused no measurable reduction. Horned Larks showed no long-term direct impacts. Indirect negative impacts occurred through …
Morphological Variability And Cell Wall Composition Of Phaeodactylum Tricornutum (Bacillariophyceae), Jeffrey R. Johansen
Morphological Variability And Cell Wall Composition Of Phaeodactylum Tricornutum (Bacillariophyceae), Jeffrey R. Johansen
Great Basin Naturalist
Five isolates of Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin were examined in light and transmission electron microscopes. Although isolated from widely separated sites including both coastal marine and inland saline habitats, the morphology of the siliceous frustules of all isolates was very constant. The fusiform and triradiate forms, which have been reported as being non-siliceous in the past, were found to have an amorphous particulate nature in TEM. These forms were examined using EDAX SEM elemental analysis and were found to contain silica in their cell walls.

Vegetation And Soil Zonation Associated With Juniperus Pinchotii Sudw. Trees, Guy R. Mcpherson, G. Allen Rasmussen, David B. Wester, Robert A. Masters
Great Basin Naturalist
Herbaceous vegetation pattern and soil properties around individual Juniperus pinchotii Sudw. trees were studied on a grazed and a relict grassland in western Texas. Herb standing crop and soil samples were obtained under the canopy, at canopy edge, and beyond the canopy edge of three to five trees on each of four dates. Standing crop was lowest midway between the bole and canopy edge. Soil organic matter was highest under juniper canopies on both sites. Soil pH and P were not related to distance from tree bole on either site. Herbaceous pattern from under the canopy to canopy edge apparently …
Two New Species Of Aurealcaulis (Osmundaceae) From Northwestern New Mexico, William D. Tidwell, David A. Medlyn
Two New Species Of Aurealcaulis (Osmundaceae) From Northwestern New Mexico, William D. Tidwell, David A. Medlyn
Great Basin Naturalist
Two new osmundaceous species, Aurealcaulis moorei and A. bransonii, are described from the San Juan Basin of northwestern New Mexico. The area from which they were collected is uncertain, but it is presumed they came from the Lower Eocene San Jose Formation near Angel Peak, southeast of Bloomfield, New Mexico. The species are characterized by having a heterogeneous (A. moorei) to homogeneous (A. bransonii) pith, non- or partial closure of their leaf gaps, exarch protoxylem clusters, formation of their C-shaped leaf traces by fusion of two segments from adjacent xylem strands in their inner cortices, …
Holocene Bison From Arches National Park, Southeastern Utah, Jim I. Mead, Saxon E. Sharpe, Larry D. Agenbroad
Holocene Bison From Arches National Park, Southeastern Utah, Jim I. Mead, Saxon E. Sharpe, Larry D. Agenbroad
Great Basin Naturalist
An artifact constructed from a bison (Bison bison) hornsheath was recovered from the surface of a sandstone shelter also containing skeletal remains of bison and bighorn (Ovis Canadensis). Radiocarbon dating of bison, bighorn, and the artifact indicate that all co-occurred on the central Colorado Plateau, southeastern Utah, either between A. D. 1405 and A. D. 1420, or between A. D. 1535 and A. D. 1605. Skeletal remains of the bison imply that the animal was of the local faunal community during the transition between Protohistoric and Historic time.

Radio Harness System For Bobcat Kittens, Boyde H. Blackwell, Grant T. Frost, Jerran T. Flinders, Harry A. Barber
Great Basin Naturalist
Eight bobcat kittens were fitted with a specially designed harness system supporting a radio transmitter. These kittens were the youngest known to be radio-instrumented. This system was used successfully through two seasons, from June 1989 to January 1991. Litters of kittens were located soon after birth for weighing, marking, and aging (by tooth eruption). During the first year when kittens were at least eight weeks old and six weeks old the second year, attempts were made to radio-instrument kittens in each litter. This harness system allowed litters to be located periodically until their death or dispersal. We were able to …
