On The Origins Of Life — Modelling The Initial Stages Of Complex Coacervate Droplet Formation, Yixuan Wu
On The Origins Of Life — Modelling The Initial Stages Of Complex Coacervate Droplet Formation, Yixuan Wu
Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Awards (WLURAs)
Coacervate droplets are considered a plausible model for protocells due to their spontaneous formation and ability to compartmentalize macromolecules such as nucleic acid and peptides. Although experimental studies have observed and synthesized coacervates under different laboratory conditions, little is known about their structure. Here we present atomistic molecular dynamic simulations of the interactions between water and oppositely charged proteins that cluster together in a salt-dependent process. Observing such liquid-liquid phase separation on an atomic level would serve as a model for the initial stages of complex coacervate formation. Molecular Dynamics was used to compute diagnostics of the structure at different …
Social Supports For Adolescent And Young Adult Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Patients: A Scoping Review, Caitlin E. Mungall
Social Supports For Adolescent And Young Adult Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Patients: A Scoping Review, Caitlin E. Mungall
Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Awards (WLURAs)
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a chronic disorder with negative health consequences for millions of women. The paucity of research regarding interventions targeting the psychosocial symptoms of PCOS for adolescents and young adults (AYAs), susceptible to low self-esteem and depression, warranted this review. This paper provides an overview of research on the social supports currently available for AYAs and identifies areas where further research is required to elucidate their support needs. A scoping review methodology identified 15 studies that met inclusion criteria. Findings revealed that this is an emerging field of research and most included studies originated in North America. …
False Recognition: Revisiting The Account For Pictorial Encoding, Katarina Jovanovic
False Recognition: Revisiting The Account For Pictorial Encoding, Katarina Jovanovic
Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Awards (WLURAs)
False recognition is an inaccurate claim of having previously encountered a non-presented test item. Exceptionally high levels of false recognition are observed when participants are exposed to lists of semantically related words. Israel and Schacter (1997) showed that presenting pictures of items with their auditory label during the encoding phase significantly reduced false recognition relative to presenting only words with their auditory label. The current study excluded the auditory labels and instead investigated whether presenting pictures of items along with words during encoding would also reduce false recognition relative to presenting the written words only. The results provided no evidence …
A Transdiagnostic Examination Of Cognitive Heterogeneity In Children And Adolescents With Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Sarah Al-Saoud, Emily S. Nichols, Emma G. Duerden, Loretta Norton
A Transdiagnostic Examination Of Cognitive Heterogeneity In Children And Adolescents With Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Sarah Al-Saoud, Emily S. Nichols, Emma G. Duerden, Loretta Norton
Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Awards (WLURAs)
Children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) demonstrate extensive cognitive heterogeneity that is not adequately captured by traditional diagnostic systems. Using a transdiagnostic approach, a retrospective cohort study of cognitive functioning was conducted with a large heterogenous sample (n = 1529) of children and adolescents 7 to 18 years of age with NDDs. Measures of short-term memory, verbal ability, and reasoning were administered to participants with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), comorbid ADHD/ASD, and typically developing (TD) participants using a 12-item web-based neurocognitive testing battery. Unsupervised machine learning techniques were implemented to create a self-organizing map (SOM), …

About: This report includes elements of Indigenous and Western forms of knowledge to share a holistic story of the Deshkan Ziibi Conservation Impact Bond (DZCIB). The authors sought to write this report being guided by a “Two-Eyed Seeing” perspective1, bringing together Indigenous and Western ways of knowing, seeing, and being. As a reader, you are implored to reflect on the colonial legacy which continues to disempower Indigenous value …

Ramat Morrison, a public health nurse at Mbeki clinic situated near Rwanda’s Mahama refugee camp, is worried about the rising incidence of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections among female refugee youth. A community-based program designed to address these widespread sexual and reproductive health challenges has had a low uptake rate by refugee youth since its inception. Ramat now faces a dilemma of which multisectoral approach to adopt to enhance this uptake rate. She has several options she can implement to precipitate change. The role of partnership and collaboration with other refugee organizations and stakeholders is now paramount in reducing …

Nia Singh is an intercultural education specialist and leads the Intercultural Safety Training Program (ISTP) at the Southwestern Ontario Intercultural Education Centre (SOIEC). She has undertaken significant work with the ISTP developing and implementing training sessions and webinars to help clients make their workplace more culturally competent. Nia has recently observed that the ISTP could greatly benefit from including training materials to help health care practitioners provide improved health care to Indigenous patients. Indigenous people face numerous social, political, historical barriers while accessing healthcare services in Canada. Cultural differences can also lead healthcare practitioners to discriminate against their Indigenous patients …

Immigration plays an integral part in the development of multiculturalism within Canada, with the majority of immigrants representing visible minority communities. Research shows Canada’s newest settlers are more likely to experience health disparities and inequalities compared to non-indigenous and Canadian-born residents. Research further indicates that the access and quality of health services is commonly compromised when health care and/or service providers do not respond appropriately to language and cultural factors impacting newcomer health. Communities vary in culture, traditions, and language, however, are often grouped together. One approach will not fit all with the cultural and ethnic differences within these communities. …

Western Public Health Casebooks
The COVID-19 pandemic has emerged as an important topic of discussion at the Public Health Agency of Canada’s federal, provincial, and territorial tables. Representatives from each Canadian province and territory have come together to discuss the discrepancies noted in the attribution of COVID-19 cases between jurisdictions. Senior epidemiologist, Nina Mendez, is leading a case attribution project to give provinces and territories a forum for discussing any jurisdiction issues they encounter when reporting COVID-19 cases. Nina notices discrepancies in the way provinces and territories are reporting cases, where the majority of jurisdictions have been reporting cases based on official permanent residence, …
