Occupational Therapy Doctoral Student Capstone Posters
Occupational therapists have the opportunity to develop programming for inmates to increase skills and engagement in meaningful leisure activities, and to help inmates successfully reintegrate into the community. Through the collection of data from my needs assessment, I created a 12-leisure program outline to educate the women on types of leisure and how leisure participation can be impacted by different barriers, with the ability to participate in a variety of leisure activities. Also, I created a Community Resource Guide that will allow the women to have access to resources in their community upon release to become stable and independent.

Rise Up Industries And The Challenge Of Reentry For Formerly Incarcerated Individuals, Andrew Blum
Kroc IPJ Research and Resources
Rise Up Industries provides reentry services and support to formerly incarcerated individuals who were previously in gangs through an intensive job training program, offered alongside a holistic set of support services. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Executive Director, Andrew Blum, provides a deeper understanding of this approach and the results it has produced to date, while situating it in the context of other initiatives focused on reentry and reducing recidivism.
This case study concludes that RUI’s reentry program is a promising approach and likely makes a small-scale contribution to solving a very hard problem – successfully fostering the reentry …

Adverse Childhood Experiences And The Risk Of Drug Overdose In Adulthood, Samantha E. Wright
Graduate Research Posters
Background
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) encompass a variety of traumatic events that occur during one’s youth. ACEs may be physical, mental, emotional, or sexual in nature, and they are often associated with long-term negative consequences such as alcoholism, substance abuse, and criminal justice involvement. The global rise of the opioid epidemic has intensified the need to better understand and address factors associated with illicit substance use. The current study will investigate the relationship between exposure to ACEs, onset of drug use, and history of drug overdose.
Methods
This study will utilize an observational design in which participants will be asked …

[2021 Winner] Incarceration As A New Age Form Of Slavery For People Of Color And Racism In The United States, Tessa Rosasco
Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award
Throughout the history of the United States, racial disparity has been rampant. This is especially true in relation to the population of people of color imprisoned in the U.S. My paper discusses the racial inequality in America, especially that of African Americans, and how people of color have been unjustly treated in a historically racist and unjust system. Special emphasis has been given to the portrayal of African Americans in the media and how presidential rhetoric and agendas have harmed communities of color.

Global Comparison Of Incarceration: Punitive Versus Rehabilitative Frameworks, Rachel Digangi, Joshua Baldwin
Community of Scholars Day—Posters
Inspired by an internship at Billerica House of Corrections, I have found interest in conducting research on the different frameworks used for incarceration across the world. I am focusing on comparing the recidivism rates between rehabilitative and punitive prison systems. Especially in countries that have decriminalized drugs, the treatment component has been enhanced tremendously. Their success in rehabilitation forces us to question if our system is truly a broken system; reinforcing our concept of stereotypical “criminal behavior.”

Are Hispanics Discriminated Against In The Us Criminal Justice System?, Maria A. Eijo De Tezanos Pinto
Graduate Research Posters
Recent publications have contributed to increase the perception among Hispanics of an unfair and unequal treatment of this community by the US Criminal Justice System. One of the major concerns was the claim that Hispanics are incarcerated before conviction nearly twice as often as Whites. Unfair treatment perception by the population reduces legitimacy of police and government, and thus, it is imperative to analyze these uninvestigated allegations. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to address said allegations of discrimination against Hispanics and analyze with updated and reliable statistics whether Hispanics are incarcerated before conviction more often than Whites. There …
