Reoffending Among First-Time Juvenile Offenders Apr 2024

Reoffending Among First-Time Juvenile Offenders

Stander Symposium Projects

The aim of this study is to find out what factors lead to reoffending among juveniles. The goal of this project is to bring the crime rates down for juveniles, so they can grow up to be successful. Our hypothesis is that a juvenile running away from home, among other home life complications will affect and increase the chance of a juvenile re-offending; the null hypothesis states that running away from home, among other home life complications will not affect nor lower the chance of a juvenile re-offending. The research initially suggested that with clear incentives not to commit crimes, …

Police Legitimacy In Low-Income Communities Apr 2024

Police Legitimacy In Low-Income Communities

Stander Symposium Projects

This research explores a measure of police legitimacy within low-income communities, seeking to uncover the dynamics that shape the intersection of law enforcement practices and community resilience. By examining the association between community trust, procedural justice, and the socioeconomic context, the study seeks to highlight the mechanisms through which police legitimacy may influence the cycle of criminal behavior among disadvantaged youth. Additionally, the research explores potential moderating factors that may amplify or mitigate the relationship between police legitimacy and recidivism, such as race, gender, gang involvement, and other socioeconomic variables.

Benefits Of A Community Reentry Intervention For Reentry Self-Efficacy In Homeless Shelter Residents With Past Incarceration Apr 2024

Benefits Of A Community Reentry Intervention For Reentry Self-Efficacy In Homeless Shelter Residents With Past Incarceration

Stander Symposium Projects

The U.S. has one of the highest levels of incarceration and recidivism in the world (American Civil Liberties Union, 2022; U.S. Department of Justice, n.d). Several factors contribute to recidivism, including the loss of monetary funds and loss of housing upon incarceration. Homelessness especially predicts recidivism. It has been found to increase the risk of recidivism by almost 50% (Jacobs & Gottlieb, 2020). Within the context of a long-term ongoing participatory community action research project in homeless shelters (Reeb et al., 2024), this study examined the benefit of reentry support sessions within the homeless shelter environment, with an attempt to …

Unstable Homes And Juvenile Delinquency

Stander Symposium Projects

Many children commit various crimes, raising concerns about the role of their home environment in shaping their behavior. Extensive studies have explored the link between children's behavior and their home environment, considering multiple variables that contribute to youth delinquency. Variables such as home stability, single parent homes, abuse, high school dropouts, and low income houses were used in this study. Using these factors to find out whether there is an association between juvenile delinquency including breaking in to steal, selling marijuana, and beating someone up to serious injury. This study will show various theories that support the link between a …

The Influence Of Screen Time On Drug Abuse In Adolescents Apr 2024

The Influence Of Screen Time On Drug Abuse In Adolescents

Stander Symposium Projects

Today, digital screens have become an integral part of adolescents' lives more than ever. This unprecedented exposure to screens has raised concern over the impact on adolescents' development and well-being. Using the YRBS database, this case study delves into the relationship between screen time and adolescent substance use. Our study utilized the results from an extensive 2021 survey completed by high school students to observe how screen time can affect teens' likelihood to use drugs. We expected the more screen time a student had, the more likely they were to abuse drugs. However, it was found that students who have …

Does Gang Involvement And Exposure To Violence Affect Perceptions Of Juveniles’ Chances For Future Success? Apr 2024

Does Gang Involvement And Exposure To Violence Affect Perceptions Of Juveniles’ Chances For Future Success?

Stander Symposium Projects

For our project, we looked at how gang involvement and exposure to violence affect perceptions of chances for future success. This is a quantitative research project using the Pathways to Desistance dataset, which is focused on 1,354 juveniles involved with the justice system in both Maricopa County, AZ and Philadelphia, PA. We looked at the baseline data (lasting from November 2000 until March 2003). In order to be eligible for the study, juveniles had to be between the ages of 14 and 18 at the time of their offense. In our research, we used a total of nine variables. For …

The Link Between Intensive Parenting And Adolescent Well-Being Apr 2024

The Link Between Intensive Parenting And Adolescent Well-Being

Stander Symposium Projects

The link between intensive/over-controlling parenting and adolescent well-being is well established, with research indicating that higher levels of intensive/overcontrolling parenting are associated with lower levels of adolescent well-being and criminal justice system involvement in children. However, the link between intensive/over-controlling parenting and adolescent well-being and criminal justice system involvement is not well understood, and findings from past research are mixed. The present study examined the link between parental control and child outcomes using a longitudinal design in an effort to better understand their relationship over time. Also, consistent with the goodness-of-fit framework, we also tested whether the association between parental …

Media’S Role In College-Aged Students' Misconceptions Of The Criminal Justice System

Stander Symposium Projects

In recent decades, the widespread prevalence of fictional crime shows has become a defining feature of popular culture, captivating audiences with their intricate narratives of criminal investigations, courtroom dramas, and forensic analyses. This research aims to delve into the connection between these fictional crime shows and the perceptions of the criminal justice system among college-aged students. The central research question guiding this study is: How does exposure to fictional crime shows influence college-aged students' perceptions of the criminal justice system? Stander Symposium Projects

In 1994, the Phoenix Police Department, in collaboration with Rutgers University and Arizona State University, conducted a study on the use of force by and against Phoenix police officers. The study aimed to evaluate the extent of force employed in various arrest situations and to identify factors that could predict the amount of force used, including the involvement of the officer, the suspect, the nature of the offense, and the circumstances surrounding the arrest. The study generated a set of variables designed to accurately capture the diverse spectrum of forces commonly encountered in typical arrest scenarios. The study's design involved …

Exploring The Impact Of Parenting Styles On Juvenile Interpersonal Violence Apr 2024

Exploring The Impact Of Parenting Styles On Juvenile Interpersonal Violence

Stander Symposium Projects

1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced physical violence from an intimate partner. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men (NCADV, 2023). The root of this problem can be found in different ways. Depending on who the offender is, who the victim is, the individual's background, and mental issues all influence this kind of behavior. Although it might be difficult for some to understand …

We asked participants questions based on drug and alcohol habits, knowledge of sexual assault, and knowledge of someone they know who has been sexually assaulted. We used a binary logistic regression to run gender, alcohol and drug habits, and Greek life interaction in comparison to knowing someone who has been sexually assaulted by a Greek member. Our results found no significance between these independent and dependent variables.

We recoded some of these variables and ran a negative …

The Role Violent Victimizations Play In Gang Involvement

Stander Symposium Projects

Many individuals have looked into how gang involvement can affect the rates of violent victimization experienced. Knowing why people join gangs is essential to understanding why there are so many victimizations. There is no one defining reason why people join gangs. Instead, many reasons can lead an individual to join these gangs. Many of the reasons people give for joining a gang include giving them an identity within society, a sense of belonging, independence from parents, protection, and loyalty. Gangs offer many opportunities for prospective gang members and then provide them for members when they join the gang. Individuals go …
