Ptsd As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Police Discrimination And Family Relationship Among Black Americans, Mary A. Camper

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Police discrimination among Black Americans has been an ongoing trend for many years. Researchers have linked police discrimination to a traumatic experience that may result in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. In addition, researchers found that PTSD symptoms may impact the family relationship negatively. This quantitative study examined whether PTSD symptoms mediated the relationship between experiences of police discrimination and family relationships. The family system theory and the critical race theory guided this study. The family system theory described how one family member affects the whole family unit. The critical race theory described the systems that are in place …

Beyond Incarceration: Identification Of Post-Incarceration Strategies For Successful Reintegration, Sharon D. Walker Mar 2024

Beyond Incarceration: Identification Of Post-Incarceration Strategies For Successful Reintegration, Sharon D. Walker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem that was addressed in this study was the high rate of recidivism among released offenders in the United States. Recidivism results in the rearrest of up to 650,000 offenders within 3 years of release. Reentry barriers are a primary cause of recidivism across the United States, as released offenders struggle to reintegrate into their communities. Policymakers and researchers have not focused on non-recidivating ex-convicts who designed, implemented, and maintained strategies for successful living. Rather than identifying obstacles ex-convicts face, which have been long recognized, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to investigate and identify post-incarceration strategies for …

Church Leaders' Perception Of Their Role In The Deterrence Of Juvenile Reincarceration, Sherine Sandrea Brown-Thomas

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In 2019, U.S. law enforcement officers detained almost 700,000 juveniles under the age of 18. The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention stated that 55% of juveniles were rearrested within a year, and after that, 24% of juveniles were reincarcerated within a year. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore church leaders’ perceptions of their role, experiences, and activities in contributing to reducing the risk of reincarceration of juvenile offenders, and to create a model for other community leaders. The conceptual framework for the study was Shaw and McKay’s social disorganization theory. …

The Relationship Between Domestic Violence And Substance Abuse Treatment Outcomes, Bernardina Marcelo Feb 2024

The Relationship Between Domestic Violence And Substance Abuse Treatment Outcomes, Bernardina Marcelo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Little is known about how domestic violence treatment outcomes relate to substance abuse among intimate partners. Previous studies have reported that intimate partners who are in treatment for substance use struggle with the containment of domestic violence. Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to investigate how substance abuse among intimate partners relates to domestic violence treatment outcomes. Two theoretical frameworks, namely cycle of violence theory and social exchange theory informed the study. A convenience sample of 76 participants participated in the study. Data were analyzed using binary logistic regression, and the results showed that women in domestic …

High School Administrators’ Perspectives On Reducing Chronic Absenteeism Among African American Male Adolescents, Torrie Siemone Walker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The research problem for this study was that school administrators in an East Coast urban public school district in the United States inconsistently implemented leadership strategies to reduce the chronic absences of African American male high school students. Chronic absenteeism rates had led to decreased graduation rates and higher drug use and school dropout rates in the district. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore high school administrators' perspectives on implementing situational theory strategies to address the challenges of reducing the chronic absenteeism of African American male high school students. Hersey and Blanchard’s theory of situational leadership …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The rate of recidivism among African American women is disproportionately higher than among European American or Latino women in a southeastern state. The problem identified was the high prevalence of recidivism among African American women despite undergoing reentry programs. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the practices of reentry program leaders in a southeastern state that reduce recidivism among formerly incarcerated African American women. Middle And High School Administrators’ Perceptions On The Use Of Culturally Responsive Leadership Practices Related To Student Discipline, Amanda Mccullough

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Educators in the United States have become increasingly concerned about students who are suspended out of school because they miss classroom instruction and are then less likely to graduate. The problem addressed in this study was that school administrators continued to use exclusionary practices for discipline negating more culturally responsive practices. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore middle and high school administrators’ perceptions on their approaches to discipline and culturally responsive practices when considering disciplinary consequences as an alternative to out of school suspension. Culturally responsive school leadership served as the conceptual frameworks for this study. …

Elementary Educators' Experiences Implementing Mandatory Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Curricula, Latonsha Diane Pridgen Feb 2024

Elementary Educators' Experiences Implementing Mandatory Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Curricula, Latonsha Diane Pridgen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a recognized public health problem with lasting adverse impacts on survivors, their families, and society, and three million children are affected by CSA. School-based CSA prevention education is the primary prevention method most commonly used to address this social problem. As such, legislators in 28 U.S. regions have enacted laws requiring CSA prevention curricula be administered in public schools. Although several researchers have studied the efficacy of school-based CSA prevention curricula, there has been limited research exploring the experiences of educators implementing the curricula. The goal of this generic qualitative study was to examine the …

Exploring Resiliency In Adult Blacks Who Were Formerly Children Of Incarcerated/Formerly Incarcerated Parents, Jennifer Nowell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Families of incarcerated individuals are impacted by the incarceration of their loved ones, especially those who had parents incarcerated during their childhood. Black individuals comprise a disproportionate rate of people affected by the circumstance of having incarcerated or formerly incarcerated parents. As a result, Black children of incarcerated parents often exhibit childhood trauma. Current evidence revealed that there is little data regarding how childhood trauma impacted the individuals’ perceptions of resiliency as they transitioned from childhood into adulthood. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of adult Blacks regarding their former childhood experiences with resiliency and their …

Exploring The Teacher Perceptions Of The Overrepresentation Disciplinary Actions Against African American Male Elementary School Students, Amber Hill

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Leadership, teachers, and parents have observed significantly disproportionate discipline of African American students at urban elementary schools located in Ohio, despite the implementation of positive behavior intervention supports (PBIS). This basic qualitative study explored teacher perceptions of the overrepresentation of disciplinary actions amongst African American male elementary students in a regional school system in Ohio. The conceptual framework for this study was derived from Ladson-Billings’ theory of culturally relevant pedagogy and Skinner’s operant conditioning, which supports the PBIS framework. The research questions focused on the teachers’ perceptions and recommendations about training, resources, and support they need to address the overrepresentation …
