Exploring Dual Roles In Law Enforcement Officers Who Administer Naloxone, Regina Sullivan Wachenheim
Exploring Dual Roles In Law Enforcement Officers Who Administer Naloxone, Regina Sullivan Wachenheim
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
With the introduction of law enforcement-administered naloxone, officers are assuming the dual role of law enforcer and caregiver with opioid users. This study used cognitive role theory and Thorne’s interpretive approach to explore the dual roles experienced by officers. The purpose of this study was to understand (1) how officers who administer naloxone describe their experience of the dual role, and (2) how the officers describe the role expectations of law enforcer and caregiver. Seven officers completed semi-structured, one-on-one, telephone interviews. The eight themes that emerged were related to the officers’ views of (1) saving and changing opioid users’ lives; …

How Police Investigators View Credibility Of Victims Of Sexual Assault Crimes, Lakesha Richele Boone
How Police Investigators View Credibility Of Victims Of Sexual Assault Crimes, Lakesha Richele Boone
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Sexual assault is a sensitive topic, and research has become increasingly popular. Most literature focuses on stigma, attitudes, and perceptions that victims and law enforcement have about each other. Law enforcement officers are responsible for making charging decisions based on their investigations and ways by which they determine credibility and reliability of victims. It was unclear what criteria law enforcement officers use to ascertain relevant flaws in victim character and credibility. The purpose of this study was to explore how law enforcement officers evaluate credibility of sexual assault victims during investigations. The feminist legal, just world, and rape myth acceptance …
Lived Experiences Of College-Educated African American Males During Police Interactions In Central Kentucky, Lawerence Eric Charles
Lived Experiences Of College-Educated African American Males During Police Interactions In Central Kentucky, Lawerence Eric Charles
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Recent high-profile incidents involving police interaction with Black citizens have increased community outrage and racial divisions between police and African Americans. Despite previous research on relations between African Americans and police, little literature has focused on the lived experiences of college-educated African American males when interacting with police. In the study 12 participants were interviewed. The analytical approach was grounded theory, which identified seven themes that most of the men had in common. One shared lived experience expressed the need for collaborative and inclusive policies that prevent bias, police brutality, and wrongful arrest and detention of the African American community. …

Cultural Responsiveness In Policing, Stacy Berry Workman
Cultural Responsiveness In Policing, Stacy Berry Workman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over the last decade, headlines have highlighted police-citizen conflicts. With the continuing change in communities to an increasingly diverse population, communication and interactions between officers and citizens must progress towards fairness and transparency. The delivery of culturally competent public safety services facilitates more favorable client outcomes, more effective interpersonal communication, and increased service satisfaction from clients. Although this is heavily stressed in public safety agencies and can decrease the possibility of tort liability for failing to provide adequate services or appropriate treatment, the emphasis varies. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the policies and influences of law …
Generational-Cohorts And Mental Health Help-Seeking Behavior Intentions In Law Enforcement Officers, Victoria Mccann
Generational-Cohorts And Mental Health Help-Seeking Behavior Intentions In Law Enforcement Officers, Victoria Mccann
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Law enforcement is a high-stress, high-risk occupation that can lead to mental health issues. These issues can affect law enforcement officers and the level of service they provide to the public. Traditionally, officers have been found to be resistant to seeking help for their mental health. It was hypothesized that generational turnover may be impacting this positive change found in recent research. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the effect of generational cohorts on officers' mental health help-seeking behaviors. The core concepts of the Theory of Planned Behavior (attitudes, subjective norms, internal perceived behavioral control, external perceived …
Social Workers’ Perceptions On Partnering With Police To Address Violent Police Encounters Towards African Americans, Adrian Springfield
Social Workers’ Perceptions On Partnering With Police To Address Violent Police Encounters Towards African Americans, Adrian Springfield
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research documents the pervasiveness of violent police encounters towards African Americans in the United States and importance of a multidisciplinary approach between social workers and police to prevent police violence. However, little is known about social workers perceptions and experiences on partnering with police to address violent police encounters towards African Americans. Informed by Tuckman’s group formation theory and Bell’s critical race theory, the purpose of this generic qualitative inquiry study was to explore social workers in the United States perceptions and experiences on partnering with police to address violent police encounters toward African Americans. Using semistructured interviews, data was …

Police Officers’ Perspectives Regarding The Militarization Of The Jamaica Constabulary Force, Anthony Hugh Mclaughlin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Crime is the main public safety issue and a significant threat to human and economic development in Jamaica. To curtail the worsening crime problem, the prime minister of Jamaica has declared a state of public emergency in certain parishes. Policy makers currently lack understanding of how the militarization of the Jamaica Constabulary Force has affected communities and citizens in Jamaica where states of public emergency have been declared. The purpose of this general qualitative study was to understand police officers’ perspectives on the militarization of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. The theoretical framework was the operational-styles theory, which offered a means …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
According to previous research, African Americans in Cleveland, OH, reported having more negative experiences with the Cleveland Police Department (CPD) than any other demographic in the city. Furthermore, The U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, determined that the CPD had regularly engaged in excessive force by police officers. This study's purpose was to understand African Americans' experiences in Cleveland regarding the CPD. This study's research question focused on African Americans' experiences in Cleveland and their relationship with the Cleveland police. The study used a general qualitative design to conduct interviews with 10 African Americans between the ages of 18 …
Job Satisfaction, Personality Traits, Resilience, And Education Level Among Rural Police Officers, Chellie Newman-Noon
Job Satisfaction, Personality Traits, Resilience, And Education Level Among Rural Police Officers, Chellie Newman-Noon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police agencies struggle with police officer attrition, resulting in agencies needing to hire new officers. This process is costly and results in unwise decision-making by police officers due to inexperience, excessive use of force, and ultimate distrust of police by civilians. Job satisfaction can diminish attrition and excessive use of force and increases both prudent decision-making and civilian trust. The characteristics of personality traits, education level, and resilience contributing to job satisfaction were addressed in the current study using a nonexperimental predictive correlational design. An online assessment of the Big Five traits, resilience, and job satisfaction, in addition to a …
The Experiences Of Female Survivors Of Sexual Assault When They Make A Police Report, Tracy L. Rainey
The Experiences Of Female Survivors Of Sexual Assault When They Make A Police Report, Tracy L. Rainey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nearly 20% of all women will be the victim of an attempted or completed sexual assault within the United States, yet less than one quarter of victims will report their experienced crime to law enforcement (LE). Many survivors of sexual violence experience apprehension about reporting sexual assault, due to fear of social consequences, relational consequences, and fear of the reprisal from LE officers. The purpose of this interpretive descriptive qualitative study was to describe and interpret the experiences of adult, female sexual assault survivors when they make a LE report about their victimization. Resilience theory, which is the study of …
Compassion And Empathy: Comparing Police Officers With And Without Military Experience, Harlyn Alexander Montealegre
Compassion And Empathy: Comparing Police Officers With And Without Military Experience, Harlyn Alexander Montealegre
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Interpersonal characteristics, including compassion and empathy, are an essential part of the relationship that police officers have with local communities. Historically, recruitment departments of law enforcement agencies have favored military veterans as candidates because of the similarities between the two professions, such as weapon handling and organizational structure. However, it is possible that prior military experience may negatively impact characteristics of compassion and empathy, given that military personnel are often exposed to conditions (e.g., combat) that can degrade compassion and empathy. The purpose of this study was to compare levels of compassion and empathy between police officers with and without …

Law Enforcement As A Career Choice Among Undergraduate Criminal Justice Students At Texas State University, Jessie Mcmahon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The number of police officers in the United States is decreasing amid ongoingrecruitment and retention issues. The low staffing levels compromise community and officer safety. Although criminal justice is a popular undergraduate college major, many graduates pursue other careers for reasons that are not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to identify the reasons why some undergraduate criminal justice students are no longer interested in policing as a career choice. A phenomenological qualitative research design was used. The theoretical framework was rational choice theory. Eight undergraduate criminal justice students at Texas State University who were no longer seriously …
Perception Of Racial Minorities And Police Officers Involving Use Of Force, Linda L. Hester
Perception Of Racial Minorities And Police Officers Involving Use Of Force, Linda L. Hester
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although police training, codes of ethics, and use of force policies are in place at police departments, the problem is there is a lack of standardization involving use of force by police officers, which is triggering community concerns between police officers and racial minorities. The present study built on the work of Riter by exploring perceptions and lived experiences of racial minorities involving police officers’ use of force based on fear, trust, and confidence. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore whether lived experiences of racial minority citizens differ from police officers regarding use of force in a …
Lived Experiences Of Police Officers And Their Roles During Opioid Overdose, Sean Banks
Lived Experiences Of Police Officers And Their Roles During Opioid Overdose, Sean Banks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have conducted multiple studies regarding opioid users, opioid addicts, relatives of addicts, and health professional responses. The opioid crisis has been a focus for scholars following the first wave of prescription in 1991 (CDC, 2016). However, there is limited research that examines the lived experiences of law enforcement officers and their roles during an opioid overdose. As the opioid crisis has continued to negatively affect individuals, families, communities, cities, and countries, federal, state, and local policymakers have searched for ways to combat the opioid crisis. For many law enforcement agencies, policymakers have enacted policy that mandates patrol officers carry …
Black Citizens Experiences And Interactions With Police In Coffee County, Brittany Nicole Palmer
Black Citizens Experiences And Interactions With Police In Coffee County, Brittany Nicole Palmer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Media attention directed towards the relationship between law enforcement officers and communities of color has increased in recent years, specifically regarding the treatment of African Americans. In some cases, contact between police and African Americans had resulted in excessive and unjustified use of force. These types of occurrences have resulted in a divide between African Americans and police officers. The purpose of this phenomenological research study was to understand African Americans’ experiences and interactions with police in communities with less-than-optimal working relations in Coffee County, Georgia. The theoretical framework for this study is the normative sponsorship theory. Data were collected …
The Role Of Organizational Socialization On The Ethical Orientation Of Male Police Officers, Megan Marie Bessey
The Role Of Organizational Socialization On The Ethical Orientation Of Male Police Officers, Megan Marie Bessey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A gap in literature exists surrounding years of service, training, and ethical attitudes within the law enforcement industry. The proposed hypothesis was that years of service in law enforcement and hours of in-service training were interactively related to an officer's ethical attitudes as related to ethical orientation. The purpose of this study was to examine organizational socialization within the law enforcement profession, specifically as demonstrated through the interaction effects of factors relating to ethical orientation and scores measured by the Ethics Position Questionnaire of male Northern Kentucky and Southern Oregon police officers. The major theoretical propositions for this study came …
The Relationship Between Programming After Critical Incidents, Shootings, And Resilience In Police, Michelle Lise Vincent
The Relationship Between Programming After Critical Incidents, Shootings, And Resilience In Police, Michelle Lise Vincent
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine whether there was a relationship between resilience, posttraumatic growth, and reintegration programming after a critical incident and/or line of duty shooting through the cognitive, self-efficacy and resiliency theoretical lenses. The research aimed to determine if police officers, who participated in reintegration programming, specifically in this study, Edmonton Police’s Reintegration After Critical Incident programming, produced higher scores in resilience as measured on the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and posttraumatic growth, as measured on the Post Traumatic Growth Inventory scale (PTGI), with Canadian police officers compared to police officers who do not participate in …
Effects Of User-Generated Online Video Postings On Patrol Officers’ Behavior, Yarellys Perez
Effects Of User-Generated Online Video Postings On Patrol Officers’ Behavior, Yarellys Perez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social media has become an important tool used by citizens to assess police officers’ activities through user-generated videos that are posted online. However, little is understood about how police officers, who are the main actors of these videos, feel about this phenomenon. Employing the Lazarus transactional theory and the emotional labor theory, this phenomenological study explored the perceptions of patrol officers regarding the history of user-generated postings of police activity. Data were collected using semistructured interviews with 8 police officers who patrol in metropolitan areas of Florida and Puerto Rico. The data obtained through these interviews were transcribed and coded, …
Race And Proportionality Of Traffic Stops By Four Police Departments In Demographically Distinct Communities., Danielle Sheree Lessard
Race And Proportionality Of Traffic Stops By Four Police Departments In Demographically Distinct Communities., Danielle Sheree Lessard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Most police departments in the southcentral region of the United States do not racially represent the communities they serve. This lack of diversity has led some communities to perceive law enforcement as racially biased. The purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental, correlational, cross-sectional study was to assess the validity of this perception based upon traffic stop data. Using representative bureaucracy theory, this study examined the traffic stop summary data of four police departments in the southcentral region of the U.S. for 2016-2019. The study aimed to determine if a police department’s racial demographics impacted the stop proportionately to the racial representation …
Crisis Intervention Team Training: Full Implementation, Roy Garvin Taylor
Crisis Intervention Team Training: Full Implementation, Roy Garvin Taylor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Law enforcement officers (LEOs) encounter unique challenges when responding to calls involving an emotionally disturbed person (EDP) in crisis. In these situations, the LEOs are not merely acting in a law enforcement capacity but also taking on the roles of mental health workers, social workers, and other community support services. Unfortunately, most LEOs lack clear direction and training to effectively serve this unique population, with the typical encounter resulting in the arrest of the EDP and often ensuing in a vicious circle of arrest, incarceration, and recidivism. This phenomenological qualitative study used the perceptions of active Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) …
Perceptions Of Stress And Coping In The First Year Of Police Work, Scott David Eaton
Perceptions Of Stress And Coping In The First Year Of Police Work, Scott David Eaton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The pressures associated with a career in law enforcement are considerable and often result in significant detriment to an officer's personality, behavior, and overall mental health, ultimately impacting job performance and work engagement. Although there is extensive research on the influence of stress encountered in police work, an understanding of those stressors and ways of coping in the first year of police work has yet to be fully explored. The purpose of this study was to describe the lived experiences of 5 police officers who have been subject to stress in their first year and to identify the coping skills, …
A Phenomenological Study: Police Officers’ Lived Experiences With The Use Of Ceds, Gustavo Alejandro Escalante
A Phenomenological Study: Police Officers’ Lived Experiences With The Use Of Ceds, Gustavo Alejandro Escalante
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The use of conducted energy devices (CEDs; e.g., TASER) in the U.S. has increased significantly since their endorsement by the police in the 1990s. Police administrators have struggled with CED placement in use of force continuums, and citizens have voiced concerns regarding their disproportionate use and health effects. An increase in understanding of the value of CEDs, specifically the devices’ role when used as a threat only, provides police administrators with more significant insights regarding their appropriate placement in department policies, which leads to more proportionate use by police officers. This phenomenological study explored police officers’ lived experiences involving displaying …
Prior Military Combat Experience And Domestic Policing Use-Of-Force Decisions, Ernesto Munoz
Prior Military Combat Experience And Domestic Policing Use-Of-Force Decisions, Ernesto Munoz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Use-of-force decisions are made in both the military combat and domestic policing environments. In this phenomenological study I aimed to examine what, if any, the effect of military combat experience has on domestic policing use-of-force decisions for military combat veteran police officers. Schneider and Shiffrin’s dual process of automatic and controlled processing theory offered the theoretical framework that was applied to how military combat veteran police officers may be affected by their military combat experience in the application of domestic policing use-of-force decisions. This qualitative study was designed to collect lived experiences of military combat veteran police officers who transitioned …
Key Ethical Leadership Characteristics Of State Police Promotional Candidates In The South, David Patrick Hay
Key Ethical Leadership Characteristics Of State Police Promotional Candidates In The South, David Patrick Hay
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Public officials, researchers, and practitioners agree police organizations need the proper tools to foster a stronger sense of ethical leadership to more effectively conduct police operations and work with communities. However, few researchers have investigated ethical leadership characteristics for police supervisors, and no research has been conducted to identify desired ethical leadership characteristics for state police supervisors in the southern United States. The purpose of this qualitative Delphi study was to determine the degrees of consensus and support of identified key ethical leadership characteristics for state police promotional candidates in the southern United States, using the theoretical framework of transformational …
Compassion Fatigue And Police Use Of Force, Amanda K. Devan
Compassion Fatigue And Police Use Of Force, Amanda K. Devan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Compassion fatigue is a natural response to caring, where burnout and exhaustion result from helping professions which includes police officers. Exposure to trauma and stress increases the risk of developing compassion fatigue in helper professions and may have negative implications on overall mental health and physical well-being. However, not much is known about the behavioral effects of compassion fatigue among police officers during use-of-force incidents. The purpose of this study was to examine whether compassion fatigue in police officers is predictive of use-of- force incidents. The theoretical foundation was Figley’s theory of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue. Survey data were …
Single Mothers’ Perceptions Of Police Encounters And Effectiveness Related To Youth Gun Violence, Janay M. Gasparini
Single Mothers’ Perceptions Of Police Encounters And Effectiveness Related To Youth Gun Violence, Janay M. Gasparini
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Single mothers and their children residing in high-crime communities (HCCs) in the United States are disproportionately exposed to crime, and therefore, the criminal justice system. Specific challenges of single motherhood in HCCs compound the link between juvenile offending and single-female-headed households. Little is known, however, about how single mothers in HCCs perceive and use the police as a resource to help prevent juvenile offending, specifically gun violence. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of single mothers with police as they related to the arrest of their children for a gun crime. The research questions focused …
Relationship Between Job Embeddedness And Turnover Intentions Among Municipal Law Enforcement Officers, William Alonzo Forrester
Relationship Between Job Embeddedness And Turnover Intentions Among Municipal Law Enforcement Officers, William Alonzo Forrester
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Law enforcement organizations have been facing a challenge with maintaining an adequate level of personnel due to an increased rate of employee turnover, which has been shown to have a negative impact on an agency's ability to reduce both property and violent crimes. The purpose of this cross-sectional, quantitative study was to examine job embeddedness as a predictor of turnover intentions among municipal law enforcement officers by using the human capital theory as the theoretical foundation. To collect the data, a survey link was distributed to all personnel of a large, municipal law enforcement agency in the southeastern United States; …
