The Problem: While middle class students can succeed in L2 immersion programs, there is growing evidence that language minority students from low socioeconomic backgrounds do better in Ll programs. Jim Cummins' linguistic interdependency hypothesis resolves this apparent paradox by proposing that middle class students enter school with cognitive academic language proficiencies (CALF), which allow them to succeed in language mismatch situations. He claims that CALF is best developed in Ll and that schools should_teach language minority students in their first language. This study attempted to test the validity of Cummins' CALF construct. This study investigated and compared the non-verbal creative behavior of Spanish-English Proficient (SEP) and Limited-English Proficient (LEP) girls as measured by the figural form of the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT); and examined the relationships of non-verbal creative thinking and selected home environment variables, as measured by the Index of Home Educational Environment (IEE). In the present study, the influence of various drug pretreatments will be investigated in the rabbit in an attempt to (a) define the pharmacological mechanism of action of pipradrol in its mediation of hyperthermia and (b) observe the effects of these pretreatments on the behavioral effect of pipradrol. Although pipradrol is no longer of clinical utility, it is hoped that the results of this study may provide more information for its use in future studies as a pharmacological tool.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of supplementary computer-assisted instruction in raising the reading achievement of Chapter I pupils in grades 4, 5 and 6. There were 340 subjects in the sample, students in the Manteca Unified School District. Subjects were assigned to either the Experimental or Control Group based on their Reading Subtest scores on the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills.

Super, McKinlay, Norris and others have speculated that school counselors hold negative attitudes toward the use of computers. But no study was found exploring the presence, extent or nature of this supposed resistance . This study investigated attitudes of selected counselors, students, and pupil personnel administrators toward the utilization of computers and a computer-based career information system in career counseling. Breeding behavior of captive Emperor Penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) was observed at Sea World, San Diego, California during July, August, and September 1980, and April 1981. Emphasis was on displays, courtship, egg-laying, incubation, and care of chicks.

I observed the trumpet display most often between birds of opposite sexes and I interpret it as a signal of sexual identity. I interpreted the sideways stare display as a signal of sexual identity important in pair bond maintenance. Three head movements studied shared several functions including comfort behavior and reduction of intraspecific aggression. My observations confirmed that the display walk occurs in Emperors …

This study examined the effectiveness of two procedures, a visual cue and performance posting, to modify the use of sign language by psychiatric technicians. The visual cue was first introduced alone, then paired with performance posting to encourage staff use of sign language with the developmentally disabled children in their charge. Application of the visual cue alone produced little change in staff sign useage. The visual cue plus performance posting condition increased staff use of sign language during mealtimes. Four weeks of follow-up data indicated that the use of sign language remained at a level well above baseline.

This study tested the effectiveness of special packaging in increasing the medication compliance of hypertensive patients in the outpatient clinic at San Joaquin General Hospital. Seventy patients were randomly assigned to an experimental and control group. After a 6 week treatment period, the mean compliance estimates for the experimental and control groups (xl = 68.59%, x2 = 48.67%) were compared and found to be significantly different (t = 2.46, df = 33, p < .05). In addition, a statistically significant negative correlation was found between compliance and blood pressure (r = -0.51, p ~ .01).

The Criterion Referenced Leaderless Group Interview (CRLGI) was defined as a selection technique and evaluated for its utility as a predictor of Residence Counselor effectiveness.
