A College Reading Program: A Study Of Effects On Grades, Units Completed And College Retention, Dixie Diddock

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Reading deficiencies among entering college students have caused an increase in the number of college reading pro~ grams. These reading programs have taken a variety of forms; however, the goals for these programs were directed consistently toward increased GPA, retention and an ability to maintain an acceptable unit load. These criteria were used to evaluate a reading improvement program at the University of the Pacific which was developed by Sanders. This program reflected the findings of her meta-analysis of college reading programs and was eclectic in design. Effects of the reading program were evaluated based on (1) GPA at the …

The Relationship Of Location To The Effectiveness Of Marriage Enrichment Retreats And Workshops, Lavon W. Rupel

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Problem. The proliferation of marriage enrichment programs in the past two decades has generated much public interest. Little controlled research, however, has been done to guide sponsoring community agencies and churches in program effectiveness. It has been assumed that a retreat location, removed from daily routines and stresses, enhances the learning and growth opportunities for a couple who wish to focus on their relationship. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of one marriage enrichment program and to investigate the importance of location as a factor in the effectiveness of marriage enrichment weekends. In addition, the …

On The Nature Of Adolescent Jealousy, Mercedes Coto Jan 1983

On The Nature Of Adolescent Jealousy, Mercedes Coto

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Among the many issues that need to be addressed on jealousy research, a fundamental question that is yet to be answered is the characterization of the circumstances that elicit jealousy. From the behavioral perspective it is necessary to determine the antecedents related to the behavior being studied, the behavior itself, and finally its consequences. I propose to assess adolescents’ responses in given situations that might be regarded as jealousy evoking.

Increasing Staff Use Of Sign Language, Melanie Hepworth Neville

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effectiveness of two procedures, a visual cue and performance posting, to modify the use of sign language by psychiatric technicians. The visual cue was first introduced alone, then paired with performance posting to encourage staff use of sign language with the developmentally disabled children in their charge. Application of the visual cue alone produced little change in staff sign useage. The visual cue plus performance posting condition increased staff use of sign language during mealtimes. Four weeks of follow-up data indicated that the use of sign language remained at a level well above baseline.

Approach Behaviors Of Incarcerated Child Molesters, Laura-Lee Griffith-Carrasquel Jan 1983

Approach Behaviors Of Incarcerated Child Molesters, Laura-Lee Griffith-Carrasquel

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The approach behaviors of 107 incarcerated child molesters at Atascadero State Hospital in California were examined through the use of an interview protocol and a 49-question questionnaire developed from the interview findings. The goal was to develop a data base for a molestation prevention program directed toward children. Results suggest that the sampled molesters were oriented to behaviors that commonly occur in friendship formation, including focusing attention on the child and his/her interests and attributes. These findings suggest that an effective prevention program could be very difficult to develop.

A History Of The Big Trees And Avery School Districts, 1881-1940, David E. Gano

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The history of a school district is usually presented as a local history. This type of history is very thorough in naming names, locating sites, and explaining events as they affected the local scene. History does not occur in a vacuum, and often the explanation for certain behaviors or events lies beyond the local phenomena. It is the intention of this study to present the history of the Big Trees and Avery School Districts within a larger context of national forces which were also at work and sometimes, dominated the events. It is hoped that the effort to bring education …
