Repository Analytics And Metrics Portal (Ramp) Workflow Documentation And Data Definition, Jon Wheeler, Kenning Arlitsch Jan 2020

Repository Analytics And Metrics Portal (Ramp) Workflow Documentation And Data Definition, Jon Wheeler, Kenning Arlitsch

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The Repository Analytics & Metrics Portal (RAMP) is a web service that leverages Google Search Console (GSC) data to provide a set of baseline search engine performance metrics for a global, cross-platform group of institutional repositories (IR). Since launching in 2017, RAMP has grown from 3 to more than 50 participating repositories. The underlying data are unique in scope and size, and offer many opportunities for novel analyses of IR search engine performance. The data may be augmented to enable additional analyses including metadata mining and bibliometrics. In November 2019, the RAMP team released a publicly available subset of the …

Extending Data Curation Service Models For Academic Library And Institutional Repositories, Jon Wheeler Jan 2017

Extending Data Curation Service Models For Academic Library And Institutional Repositories, Jon Wheeler

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Many academic libraries have implemented institutional repositories (IR), which offer some potential for publishing and archiving data but can fall short of usability expectations and requirements. As general purpose repositories, IR's may lack the metadata and service capabilities to dynamically represent data and to effectively capitalize on complex, domain oriented metadata schema such as the Ecological Metadata Language (EML) or the ISO 19115-2014 Geographic information metadata standards. For libraries interested in providing data publishing services, one alternative to the domain agnostic nature of IR content and metadata models is to maintain the IR for traditional document types and in addition …

Beyond Discovery: Cross-Platform Application Of Ecological Metadata Language In Support Of Quality Assurance And Control, Jon Wheeler, Mark Servilla, Kristin Vanderbilt

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Metadata may be generally understood to support discovery and performance of bibliographic functions against a given resource or set of resources. For example, a limited set of basic descriptive metadata can be used to index sets of items, group or otherwise associate similar items through shared metadata values, or to establish means of defining and enforcing relevance or other ranking systems. Within the context of curating research data, descriptive and other types of metadata (notably those defined the CCSDS Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System) may be more broadly applied to administer access and reuse policies, define …

Data Curation And The Arts: How Do Musicians Curate Their Data?, Amy S. Jackson, Jon Wheeler, Todd Quinn Dec 2016

Data Curation And The Arts: How Do Musicians Curate Their Data?, Amy S. Jackson, Jon Wheeler, Todd Quinn

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Professional musicians were surveyed to determine how personal, amateur recordings of performances are shared with students and colleagues. Sharing files on social media is common, with Facebook, YouTube, and Vimeo used most frequently. Although these are popular social media platforms, they do not have enhanced format support and robust metadata. Additionally, licensing terms for each platform differ, and may be not in the best interest of the musician. Although recordings are not traditionally considered data, data curation principles can be applied to these types of files, and the library is positioned to become an active participant in this process.

Functional Requirements Specification For Archival Asset Management: Identification And Integration Of Essential Properties Of Services Oriented Architecture Products, Jon Wheeler, Karl Benedict Sep 2015

Functional Requirements Specification For Archival Asset Management: Identification And Integration Of Essential Properties Of Services Oriented Architecture Products, Jon Wheeler, Karl Benedict

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The complexity and size of geospatial data can constrain the capabilities of service providers and create risks to the long term preservation and archiving of valuable information assets. While services oriented architectures such as the Earth Data Analysis Center's Geographic Storage, Transformation and Retrieval Engine (GSToRE1) facilitate increased use and impact of geospatial data by mitigating these complexities through the development of dynamic applications and interfaces, such services can often be primarily focused on the maintenance and delivery of only the most current versions of geospatial data that may nonetheless possess significant historical, cultural, or scientific value. Actions and documentation …

Reviewing Political Controversy: Book Reviewers Assess Childrens Literature Set In Israel/Palestine, Christina M. Desai Jul 2015

Reviewing Political Controversy: Book Reviewers Assess Childrens Literature Set In Israel/Palestine, Christina M. Desai

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Abstract Because book reviewers influence which books are purchased for libraries and schools, it is important to understand the explicit or implicit criteria they employ. Reviewer practices with books on politically controversial topics set in Israel/Palestine and available to a US audience often reflect partisan views, with the dominant political discourse favouring the Israeli position, although this is far from ubiquitous. While some reviews avoid addressing the books' politics, others are decidedly partisan. Many base their evaluations on their estimation of the degree of hope and political balance achieved in the works, yet these expectations are applied selectively. Some expect …

Data Services And The Performing Arts, Amy Jackson, Jon Wheeler, Todd Quinn Jan 2015

Data Services And The Performing Arts, Amy Jackson, Jon Wheeler, Todd Quinn

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

In the academic world, research is primarily seen through the scientific approach of collecting and interpreting scientific or numeric data, or the humanistic approach of comparing and interpreting texts. However, in the performing arts fields, academics see themselves on a spectrum between scholar and artist. Artistic scholarly research activities are often driven by the same requirements as humanities research. However, as artists, research often takes the form of listening to or watching performances. In this approach, performances and recordings are research data to these academics. How can libraries support this method of research? What are the implications for data curation …

The Columbus Myth: Power And Ideology In Picturebooks About Christopher Columbus, Christina M. Desai

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

In 1992, the 500th anniversary of Columbuss landing in the Bahamas was simultaneously celebrated and denounced in the US. Damaging facts about Columbus and the impact of his voyages were aired along with demands for truth and change. This study analyzes the power relationships and political ideology of picturebooks about Columbus published in the US in the 20 years since that anniversary to determine what messages and attitudes young readers are likely to absorb from them and whether the picturebook image of Columbus has evolved. It draws on the ideas of progressive educator Herbert Kohl, who demonstrates how the analysis …

Creating A Pipeline To Engineering For Women Through An Interdisciplinary Data-Driven And Cyber-Infrastructure Enabled Course, Johann Van Reenen, Kevin Comerford Aug 2013

Creating A Pipeline To Engineering For Women Through An Interdisciplinary Data-Driven And Cyber-Infrastructure Enabled Course, Johann Van Reenen, Kevin Comerford

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Academics have become increasingly interdisciplinary while at the same time, the sciences, engineering and research in general are increasingly data driven. Most higher education curricula, especially in Engineering are, however, still rooted in more traditional, discipline bound curricula and make little use of the vast amounts of data available. We describe an experimental course that address this and aims to include women from non-engineering fields. The interdisciplinary course took a data driven approach to the intersection of womens issues, water rights, and workers' rights, taught by faculty from Civil Engineering, History, American Studies, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Geography, and Informatics. …

User-Driven Collections: Barriers To Implementation, Steven R. Harris May 2013

User-Driven Collections: Barriers To Implementation, Steven R. Harris

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The philosophy of user-driven collections is completely different than that which libraries have historically employed. This difference is typically described in the literature as just in time' versus 'just in case' collection development. In a time when it was slow and laborious to have library materials delivered, it made sense to have as much material stored on site, just in case someone wanted it, rather than having to wait for it to arrive after ordering. 'Just in time' was never soon enough. Libraries of all sizes (and their users) have lived by the just-in-case philosophy for many years. It is …

Multi-Institutional Library Collaboration And The Future Of Scholarly Collections, Steven R. Harris May 2013

Multi-Institutional Library Collaboration And The Future Of Scholarly Collections, Steven R. Harris

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Academic libraries face a number of challenges in managing large collections of periodicals and books. Stewardship of these collections must balance the need to preserve older parts of the scholarly record with the constant space demands of the ongoing acquisitions, without also impinging upon other uses the library needs to support, including student study space. Shared preservation of print collections is one way to address these issues. Collectively, libraries may be able to more effectively preserve the scholarly record.
