The New Middle School: Participatory Design And Outcomes, Tina Wichmann

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Effective school design is a multi-faceted endeavor that involves an assessment of academic goals, an evaluation of architectural factors, a survey of current research and trends, and an understanding of past precedent. However, despite these efforts, the specific sociological needs of the occupants that use the school facilities are often overlooked. This thesis explores student and faculty opinions on the predominant trends in educational architecture as they pertain to the "social" spaces of the current CCSD middle school prototype; The primary purpose of this thesis is to explore the attitudes of students and faculty with respect to their current middle …

Leadership Training And Emotional Intelligence In School Nurses, Anne L Diaz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Now more than ever, nurses need to be leaders. However, most studies of leadership, whether in nursing, business, or the military, have focused on individuals in administrative positions. School nurses practice in primarily autonomous circumstances, where they need to possess substantial leadership skills and the ability to identify and manage emotions to ensure an optimal educational learning environment for the students under their care; Three leadership theories were combined to form the Emotionally Intelligent Leadership Model as the framework for a leadership training program. This two group before and after quasi-experimental study investigated the effects of a leadership training program …

Characteristics And Success Of Information Systems Development Efforts In Public School Systems, Kim R Syverson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

While many other businesses have mastered the project management processes, school districts are just now beginning to see that such processes and techniques are even necessary; Here we use survey data from school teachers and administrators, along with two case studies to investigate factors that impact the success of information system development projects among Nevada public schools. The results highlight areas that are either currently lacking, or need to be …

School Refusal Behavior: The Relationship Between Family Environment And Parenting Style, Gillian Victoria Chapman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

School refusal behavior has been researched and discussed within psychological and educational communities for over a century, and family environment has been found to influence such behavior. Specifically, differences have been found with respect to the function of youth school refusal behavior and levels of familial independence, cohesion, and conflict. Parenting styles have also been found to influence the behavior of youth. Authoritative parenting is associated with children who perform well scholastically and exhibit few internalizing or externalizing behaviors. Family environment and parenting styles have not been researched as joint influences on school refusal behavior. This study investigated possible effects …

Reading Bodies: A Case Study Analysis Of Adolescent Girls' Experiences In An After School Book Group, Marie A Lejeune

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this study, adolescent female readers participated in an after-school literature based discussion group or "Book Group" as we came to call it, reading contemporary young adult novels that deal with issues of the body. The purpose of this study was to examine the adolescent girls' experiences within the literature discussions, as most studies relating to literature circle discussions, book clubs, or book groups do not focus on the students' experiences. A related purpose of the study was to investigate how literature based discussion groups reflect and reveal readers' own identities as well as dominant social discourse about issues of …

The Five-Year Change Process At A Secondary School: A Case Study, Luanne Marie Forrest

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explored the five-year change process as experienced by members of a secondary school community who intentionally sought out and pursued school improvement through the establishment of a continuous improvement process with the goal of increased student achievement. Three questions guided this exploration: (a) What contextual factors contributed to the change process at a secondary school pursuing continuous improvement processes; (b) How did these contextual factors interact and inter-relate to contribute to the implementation and sustainability of the continuous improvement process; and (c) How did these contextual factors interact and inter-relate to contribute to the change process itself. As …
