Lake Affect: A Novel Excerpt And Other Stories, Perry Sundberg

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

As part of the degree requirement for an MFA in Creative writing I am submitting an unpublished, original collection of short stories and a novel excerpt as my thesis. These stories are meant to encapsulate the feelings of need and confusion, the desire for understanding and acceptance, and ultimately the finality and the sometimes futility of life. These stories are meant to infuse the reader with feelings of both joy and despair, but never with passive acceptance. The title story, Lake Affect, is best described as an excerpt from a novel in progress. This portion of the novel should stand …

Complexation And Electrode Effects On The Electrochemical Behavior Of The Cerium(Iv)/Cerium(Iii) Redox Couple, Sandra Elias Elkouz Jan 2007

Complexation And Electrode Effects On The Electrochemical Behavior Of The Cerium(Iv)/Cerium(Iii) Redox Couple, Sandra Elias Elkouz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The electrochemistry of the Ce(IV)/Ce(III) redox couple was investigated as a function of working electrode composition and solution environment. Optimum redox couple resolution in aqueous sulfuric acid was achieved at an acid concentration of 0.1 M. A decline in redox couple resolution and reversibility was observed as acid concentration was increased to 2.0 M. The influence of pH was illustrated using sulfate solutions of increasing pH and constant ionic strength. Results indicated that a pH greater than 2 was detrimental to redox couple resolution. The glassy carbon electrode provided the widest potential window and was least affected by changes in …

On The Coefficients Of Ternary Cyclotomic Polynomials, Thomas Joseph Flanagan Jan 2007

On The Coefficients Of Ternary Cyclotomic Polynomials, Thomas Joseph Flanagan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this paper we investigate the coefficients of ternary cyclotomic polynomials. That is, we investigate the coefficients polynomials given by Fnz= 1⩽k⩽n n,k =1 z-e2pik/n , where n is the product of three distinct odd primes (n = pqr); First we show the coefficients of phipqr( z) are loosely connected to the residue of r modulo pq. In particular we show that if r1≡ r2 mod pq and r 1

Genesis Of Argillic Horizons In Soils Of The Charkiln Series, Spring Mountains, Clark County, Nevada, Peggy E Elliott Jan 2007

Genesis Of Argillic Horizons In Soils Of The Charkiln Series, Spring Mountains, Clark County, Nevada, Peggy E Elliott

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Understanding the pedogenesis of argillic horizons in atypical parent materials and climates provides a valuable context for understanding traditional pedogenic interpretations. In this study I examine the genesis of argillic horizons in soils forming in alluvium dominated by quartzite (an atypical parent material for argillic horizons) in an arid to semi-arid climate (usually insufficient moisture to translocate clays). Using soil physical, chemical, and mineralogical analyses with field soil mapping I examined whether the argillic horizons are currently forming and their potential source materials. Results suggest that argillic horizons formed from quartzite, limestone, and eolian dust. While mineralogy suggests soil weathering …

Design Implementation And Analysis Of A Dynamic Cryptography Algorithm With Applications, Sourabh Ghose Jan 2007

Design Implementation And Analysis Of A Dynamic Cryptography Algorithm With Applications, Sourabh Ghose

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Cryptographers need to provide the world with a new encryption standard. DES, the major encryption algorithm for the past fifteen years, is nearing the end of its useful life. Its 56-bit key size is vulnerable to a brute-force attack on powerful microprocessors and recent advances in linear cryptanalysis and differential cryptanalysis indicate that DES is vulnerable to other attacks as well. A more recent attack called XSL, proposes a new attack against AES and Serpent. The attack depends much more critically on the complexity of the nonlinear components than on the number of rounds. Ciphers with small S-boxes and simple …

Probation Officer Prototypes: Perceptions Of Probationers With And Without Mental Illness, Paula M Emke-Francis Jan 2007

Probation Officer Prototypes: Perceptions Of Probationers With And Without Mental Illness, Paula M Emke-Francis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In recent years the criminal justice system has managed large numbers of persons with mental illness, many of whom are supervised in the community on probation. Given that probation agencies are stretched to the maximum and have little extra time to take on additional challenges, probation officers (PO) may use typifications or "perceptual shorthand" as a means for efficiently managing their caseloads. Despite the role typifications may play in the processing of probationers, to date no research has attempted to characterize PO typifications; The reason for the dearth of literature in this area appears to be the result of many …

A Method For Estimating Intensity Of A Poisson Process, Sandhya Gunti Jan 2007

A Method For Estimating Intensity Of A Poisson Process, Sandhya Gunti

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Motivated by its vast applications, we investigate ways to estimate the intensity of a Poisson process. Much of the work on modeling and analysis of repairable systems is based on the assumption of a special type of nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) known as Weibull process or Power-law process. In this thesis, we link the traditional homogeneous and nonhomogeneous Poisson processes to the classical time series via a sequence of the empirical recurrence rates (ERR), calculated at equally spaced intervals of time. We consider a computationally simple algorithm to calculate the total area and also the area for the last ten …

Model Of Early Universe With H+2, Tae Song Lee Jan 2007

Model Of Early Universe With H+2, Tae Song Lee

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The aim of this thesis is to improve existing models of the Early Universe by adding vibrationally resolved reactions to a standard model. Stancil, Lepp, and Dalgarno (1996, 1998) have developed a standard chemical model for molecules in the Early Universe. Galli and Palla (1998) have shown that vibrational excitation may be important in this model by forcing the vibrational level of H+2 to be either v=0 or v=9. I studied a consistent model for the vibrational levels including level dependent formation and destruction as well as transition between the levels.
