Quilting Between The Revivals: The Cultural Context Of Quilting, 1945--1970, Colleen Rose Hall-Patton May 2004

Quilting Between The Revivals: The Cultural Context Of Quilting, 1945--1970, Colleen Rose Hall-Patton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Quilting is a reflection of women's roles in the family. What happened to quilting between 1940 and 1970 is important to examine because it tells us much about the transformation of women from producers to consumers. In the twentieth century, quilts were increasingly replaced by mass produced blankets. While quilting literature has argued that quilting, for all practical purposes, ceased between 1940 and 1970, women resisted the change to consumerism by continuing to produce quilts and negotiating their use of mass production; The portrayal of quilting in magazines shifted from an integral role as thrifty and decorative to being almost …

Pathological Gambling And Substance Abuse In The Las Vegas Arrestee Population, Jeffrey Michael Groebner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

There has been extensive literature on the nature of pathological gambling and substance abuse on criminal offending; however, most of what is known about these disorders stem from clinical populations and the general population. Both of these populations differ from arrestee populations; therefore, our understanding about the disorders remains limited. This is a study among the arrestee population utilizing data collected in Las Vegas detention centers during a federally funded research project that monitors the extent and nature of drug abuse. In addition to the program, a Gambling Addendum was administered to all willing participants; Findings support a greater prevalence …

The findings underscored (1) discrepancies between treatment needs of racially/ethnically diverse youth and substances targeted in treatment, (2) the urgent need to focus on …

Modeling Consumer Choices Between Domestic And Foreign Automobiles, Cagla Hirschman Jan 2004

Modeling Consumer Choices Between Domestic And Foreign Automobiles, Cagla Hirschman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This paper analyzes survey data to determine the factors that impact the probability of purchasing a domestic versus foreign brand of automobile. It includes dynamic variables reflecting purchase history and thus the effect past choices may have on current behavior. Some of these factors are shown to be statistically significant. The paper also looks at key subpopulations. We see that preferences in the luxury segment are far better explained by economic, demographic, and dynamic variables than are preferences in the non-luxury market. The paper also looks at switching behavior---domestic owners who switch to foreign brands. The key finding is that …

Culture Clash: Making The Case For A New Paradigm In Police Cultural Training, Hal S Edwards Jan 2004

Culture Clash: Making The Case For A New Paradigm In Police Cultural Training, Hal S Edwards

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Hiring standards in most police agencies result in most officer candidates having little, if any, meaningful exposure to the "oppositional" culture of the urban, minority poor. Given the current popularity of the Community Oriented Policing paradigm---with its emphasis on positive police/community relations---current police hiring and training practices handicap police agencies in their efforts to gain the trust of urban, minority communities. A content analysis of United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division investigations under the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 (42 U.S.C. 14141) was found to support the hypothesis that the interface between the police …

Martyred Cars, Andrea Rose Gregovich Jan 2004

Martyred Cars, Andrea Rose Gregovich

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The seven story-like chapters of Martyred Cars explore the daily business and labor of a desert junk yard and its brushes with the supernatural. Each chapter takes the point of view of a different character in their own struggles with work, life, and the entities and elements that taunt them from beyond the boundaries of known science. The novel builds these layers of cosmology of archetypal universals, patterns that recur (whether it be in landscape or the pattern on a man's shirt), and a blurring of the boundary between the inanimate and animate, the spiritual and the mundane. Martyred Cars …

Should Human Resources Managers Utilize Affirmative Action To Give Diversity Programs Legitimacy?, Janet Lynn Morrison

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Since 1987, the valuing and managing of diversity has been on the radar screens of most human resources managers. Specifically, many are wrestling with how to establish the "perfect" diversity program that serves to get the message out to their organizational members that individual differences should be viewed as resources for learning and understanding and not barriers to career success or opportunity. However, for the majority, this has proved a difficult task. Simply, human resources managers are missing the mark when it comes to identifying a solid foundation for diversity management---a foundation that will compel organizational stakeholders to recognize diversity …
