Title III Professional Development Reports

The 2021 National Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals (NAE4-HYDP) Conference was held in Memphis, Tennessee November 15-18. After switching to a virtual format last year due to COVID-19 concerns, I was pleased that this year’s conference was in-person and at a location that was reasonable for travel from Missouri. All conference activities were held at the Historic Peabody Hotel, and the theme of the event was “Pick 4-H: It’s Music to Inspire!”

NAE4-HYDP is the boots-on-the-ground component of the 4-H movement and is made up of 4-H professionals from land-grant institutions across the United States. There were 875 …

Quality Matters Annual Conference 2020, Gary Kowaluk

Title III Professional Development Reports

To better develop my online courses at Lincoln University, I attended Quality Matters 2019 Annual Conference in Grapevine, Texas from Sunday, October 27th to Tuesday, October 29th. I began the conference by attend two workshops on Sunday: one that addressed researching teaching methods in online courses, and another on online course development. While both workshops were productive, the online course development workshop was particularly helpful. It was taught by two co-authors of a recent manual on online course development. I have ordered a copy of the manual, which contained many of the tips and tricks we learned in the workshop. …

The in-person APS March Meeting 2020 taking place in Denver during March 02-06, 2020 was canceled in the last minute out of Covid-19 concerns for the well-being of the scientific community as well as the population of the city of Denver and the state of Colorado. Nevertheless, well-planned logistics by the physics community and the APS leadership, allowed attendants to share their findings, presenting their research works to their peers, and continuing the work towards the advancement of science. Given the historical and on-going under-representation of students of color in science and technology at all academic levels, there is a …

Basic Concepts For Increasing Learning For Students In General Education At Lincoln University, Aimee Busalacki

Title III Professional Development Reports

This blog reflects on general teaching principles commonly known, but also many times overlooked. Keeping teaching simple - to best engage students in the learning process - helps to recenter and refocus processes that sometimes feel convoluted or over-done. This opportunity helped me to focus my attention back to the most basic points that will help my students be successful learners in any course.

Social Justice Education Framework: Examination Of An Integrated Model For Teaching And Evaluating Social Justice Education Through Historical Injustices, Amber D. Bell

Title III Professional Development Reports

Social justice continues to be emphasized within the social work profession as a central principle and value, often identified as the professional value that separates it from other human service professions. As varied as definitions of social justice are, so are approaches to effectively teaching about social justice within social work education across the curriculum (practice, research, HBSE, and policy). Equally absent are evidence based approaches to teaching social justice. In recent years, historical injustice and our societal lack of knowledge regarding it has been examined. Numerous studies have confirmed that the K-12 education system is grossly negligent in providing students …

Description: Level Undergraduate workshops involve students from diverse backgrounds. Because of this, the traditional workshop model does not always work effectively. As Beth Nguyen states in “Unsilencing the Workshop”: “a system that relies on silencing and skewed power and endurance is a terrible system.” In this panel, experienced teachers will discuss their approaches to teaching undergraduate creative writing, and attendees will leave with practical models and practices to initiate in their classes.

Since memes surround us every day and play an increasingly important role in rhetorical strategies used to influence people, this is a great entry point to help students think analytically and critically about the memes that bombard them on social media every day. As a means of entering into visual and verbal analysis, memes can be a really great way to introduce analysis and rhetorical analysis to students. This is a lesson plan to teach rhetorical analysis using the visual and verbal images in memes. The plan also provides extensions and a list of possible resources for use in the …

I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to the Annual Meeting of the Midwest Sociological Society (MSS) this year, between the dates of April 17-20th, 2019. I will discuss how this opportunity contributed to the areas of scholarship, service, and teaching for myself.

In sum, this was a wonderful and valuable experience to be able to attend and participate in the MSS Annual meetings. I was able to utilize the opportunity to expand my networks outside of those in the mid-Missouri area, as well as enhance my knowledge in my areas of teaching/learning. As well, I was connected …

Throughout one’s coaching career, coaches will experience several complexities as it relates to the well-being of the student-athletes that we coach. In the coaching community, there are several conversations being had about a “New Breed” of student-athletes coming through the pipeline. The premise of this conversation is based on a new reality that student-athletes today require much more than skill based training and preparation. That coaches must serve in a greater capacity than just coaching, and must be equipped to serve in several other roles, such as a parental figure, counselor, motivator, amongst others.

While attending the Women’s Basketball Coaching …

My Title III trip to the 2019 AHA Conference was a successful one. I was able to provide and receive feedback on undergraduate teaching from my professional peers. I also learned several new approaches to history that I plan to slowly integrate into the courses that I teach at Lincoln University. It was a valuable experience to attend this conference, and I may seek additional Title III funding to attend future conferences so I can continue to participate in the Association's teaching workshops.

Nature poetry or the appearance of nature in poetry is a vast subject. This article deals with the subject of nature poetry in the modern world. Poetry can be a voice for nature and expression of the universal that is in poetry. I have offered a poem of my own, "Alaska, Again" with an explication. The workshop I attended, "Walking in the Field of Words," at the University of Iowa, explored the depths of nature poetry in our modern time.

This blog entry summarizes what process documentation and cross training is, and how to implement both concurrently. Process documentation and cross training consume office time, but having processes documented and the office cross train help transition new employees and current employees taking on new tasks. This process works for both large and small offices, and will prevent single point of failure situations, where one person is the only person responsible for something, and if that person leaves, no one has a clue what to do.

There are many instances, as part of general conversation and interactions with others, the question “What do you do?” is asked. On the surface, this seems like a very simple question. However, for myself and coaches alike, this question is one that is very loaded. Yet, we simply reply, we coach. The typical response is, “Oh, okay. That’s pretty awesome and sounds like fun.” Most people tend to think that the job consist of hanging around the gym all day, encouraging, yelling, and instructing players on how to put the ball in the basket. Again, on the surface that’s a …

Many studies have identified variables that impact learning outcomes for students. Recently, researchers have begun to examine how generation can impact learning, especially for the most populous group in education, the Millennials. Millennials present differently than older generations and are often not well received by professors. It has been suggested that over indulgent parenting has predisposed these students to arrive in the classroom with a different set of expectations than older generations. Educating Millennials can turn into a war of wills between faculty wanting respect for tradition and Millennials demanding flexible and customized experiences. Although Millennials must adjust to the …

Poverty, Homelessness And Domestic Violence Among Poor Mothers: Issues And Opportunities For Programs, Olivia Hetzler

Title III Professional Development Reports

This research draws on a ten-month ethnography of a domestic violence shelter. While the central research goal was to explore how mothers accomplish mothering in a semi-permanent space, what was discovered is a system of networks shaped by social class and gender, interwoven with the experience of intimate partner violence, which resulted in a limited set of options for poor mothers escaping intimate partner violence. This work contributes to the literature on the social networks of poor mothers, arguing that the dynamics of violence further restricts the already limited networks of poor mothers. To manage the gaps in their networks, …
